Above all, make sure you have fun, play by the rules and enjoy what we think is the world’s greatest game! We can guarantee that not only will you make some new friends, but you’ll also improve your skills! Jason Robottom Board Chairperson | Massé Incorporated About us Massé Incorporated was founded February 11, 1991 and was originally called the Waikato Snooker and 8 Ball Club. The Club was set up by a group of players who loved to play snooker, billiards and pool. Over the years we have grown from one Club in Hamilton to having three additional branches in Glen Eden, New Lynn and Pukekohe. Our membership has also grown from a few dozen members in 1991 to over 13,000 in the past membership year. The achievements of our members over the years has been phenomenal with numerous club members winning nearly every New Zealand title available; representing the club or New Zealand overseas; playing professionally in the UK, and even winning numerous world titles across the sports of snooker and pool. With the Club’s expansion beyond the Waikato region, it made sense to change the Clubs name to a name that reflects cue sports, hence the name Massé. This is the name of a type of cue stroke which is done by hitting the cue ball off centre with the cue held nearly vertically, causing the ball to move in a curve around another ball before hitting the object ball. Ironically, we don’t allow Massé shots to be played on our tables due to the damage it causes on our table cloth. Massé offers a range of facilities and activities for its members including cue sports and recreational equipment and products. These opportunities are available not only to Club members but also the general public. Massé is the New Zealand distributor and/or dealer for most of the world’s leading brands in cue sports including Riley, Predator, Valley, Poison, McDermott, Dynamo and much more. Massé is also the New Zealand Charter Holder for VNEA Pool Leagues which organises and runs VNEA 8 Ball Leagues within New Zealand. Massé is also responsible for the selection of the New Zealand Senior and Junior teams that travel to the United States each year to compete in the VNEA World Pool Championships. In 2017 New Zealand will be represented by 31 players at the World Champs! Our Club provides a safe and welcoming environment for its members across the Waikato, Franklin and Auckland regions. We strive to make Masse Clubs a fun place for our members to achieve the level of skill that they aim for. No matter whether our members play socially or competitively, we endeavour to have the best possible resources and support. -4- Memberships Types Massé offers three types of memberships which are Bronze, Silver and Gold. PSI_CT43_24/4 28/4/03 12:34 pm Page 95 Play as the Main Event in International and UK Culture James Woudhuysen, De Montfort University Abstract Play has become a dominant trend in the culture of Western adults. This chapter of Cultural Trends looks at its prevalence and growth. The first section briefly discusses what play is. The second provides an overview of playful varieties of leisure in the US and worldwide, and sums up some of the main trends that have emerged. The third follows the same method in relation to the UK. The fourth section looks at the increasing incidence of play at work, while the final section draws conclusions from the evidence presented. Throughout, special attention is played to the role of information technology in play. Five industries are covered extensively – computer games; gambling; sport; performing arts; and fairs, theme parks and adventure holidays. Attendance at, participation in and paid employment in play constitute three levels of engagement in it. This chapter tries to measure these levels of engagement by bringing together just some of the vast but disparate literature and statistics on play. The range of sources drawn upon is varied. Inspired by the perspectives of writers in economics, politics, sociology and technology, this chapter uses official govern- ment data, and data taken from the business press, to illustrate its ideas. The chapter asks and answers the following three questions: • Does play provide spaces and moments of freedom that, fortunately enough, lie beyond the grasp of market forces? • Is the entertainment provided by play genuinely educational, or does absorption in play instead represent a degraded notion of the Self? • By favouring mass attendance at, mass participation in and mass employment in playful activities, have UK government policies advanced the cause of culture – or have they set it back? • Carom Billiards?
What is Carom Billiards? Carom billiards, sometimes called carambole billiards, is the overarching title of a family of cue sports generally played on cloth-covered, pocketless billiard tables. In its simplest form, the object of the game is to score points or "counts" by caroming one's own cue ball off both the opponent's cue ball and the object ball on a single shot. There is a large array of carom billiards disciplines. Some of the more prevalent today and historically are (chronologically by apparent date of development): straight rail, cushion caroms, balkline, three- cushion billiards and artistic billiards. Straight Rail: The object of straight rail is simple: one point, called a "count", is scored each time a player's cue ball makes contact with both object balls (the second cue ball and the third ball) on a single stroke. A win is achieved by reaching an agreed upon number of counts. Balkline: The game employed diagonal lines at the table's corners to regions where counts were restricted. Ultimately, however, despite its divergence from straight rail, the champion's game simply expanded the dimensions of the balk space defined under the existing crotch prohibition which was not sufficient to stop nursing. In the balkline games, the entire table is divided into rectangular balk spaces, by drawing pairs of balklines lengthwise and width wise across the table parallel from each rail. This divides the table into nine rectangular balkspaces. Such balk spaces define areas of the table surface in which a player may only score up to a threshold number of points while the object balls are within that region.
