The Doubletoe Times Magazine of Clogging www.doubletoe.com 15 Central Kentucky dance troupe perform in Ireland By Beverly Fortune, Kentucky Herald- Leader The American Hoedowners, a group of 16 cloggers from Central Kentucky, toured Ireland in July, where the troupe danced over two weeks at two clogging festivals in the city of Cork.

The dancers performed freestyle clogging, and half the dance troupe did a specialty number in precision clogging, director Mike Cassidy said.

The Velvet Blue band from Central Kentucky travelled with the American Hoedowners to provide live music.

Dancers from nine countries took part in the dance festivals. “We went as goodwill ambassadors, to build better relations between countries through music and dance, Cassidy said.

To get ready for their first international appearance, the Hoedowners practiced six hours a week since May 2011.

The American Hoedowners, accompanied by the ‘Velvet Blue’ bluegrass band, stayed in Carrigaline, Ireland performed in Blackrock GAA, Clonakilty, Six Mile Bridge, Milltown Malbay, Cobh and Kilworth in the week before their appearance at the Damhsafest concerts on Wednesday 25th July 2012 in Carrigaline.

This year was the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, and the Kentuckians took part in a special tribute to the Titanic in the village of Cobh, the ship’s last port of call. Cassidy said the waltz was the last dance done on the Titanic. Two of his dancers performed a waltz in tribute to those who perished aboard the ship.
