Hot Weather Safety Tips

According to the Farmer’s Almanac, the period from July 3rd to August 11th is referred to as the Dog Days of Summer, which is the most oppressive period of summer. Prolonged exposure to heat in summer months can be dangerous. It’s important to recognize when hot weather is making you sick, and when to get help. Here’s a list of health problems caused by exposure to too much heat:

Dehydration: A loss of water in your body. It can be serious if not treated. Warning signs are weakness, headache, muscle cramps, dizziness, confusion, and passing out.

Heat Exhaustion: A serious health problem caused by too much heat and dehydration. If not treated, it may lead to a heat stroke. Warning signs include sweating, muscle cramps, tiredness, clammy skin, dizziness, headache, nau- sea or vomiting, and fainting.

Heat Stroke: A very dangerous rise in your body temperature, which may happen gradually over days of heat ex- posure. Warning signs are a body temperature of 104ºF or higher, a fast pulse, headache, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, confusion, and passing out. If you experience any of these symptoms, call 911.

Staying Safe When It’s Too Hot Out

When the temperature climbs above 80ºF, older adults need to be proactive and take precautions to avoid ail- ments due to excessive heat.

Stay in air-conditioned buildings as much as possible. Do not rely on a fan as your main cooling source when it’s really hot outside. Drink more water than usual and don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink. Wear loose, lightweight, light-color clothing. Cool down – take tepid showers, baths, or sponge baths when you’re feeling warm. The Waunakee Senior Center and the Waunakee Village Center are public cooling locations.

Do Not Leave Children, Pets or Older Adults in the car

It only takes 10 minutes when its 85ºF for the temperature to reach 102ºF inside the car. Lowering a car window par- tially does not reduce the temperature inside. Even five minutes locked in a car when it’s hot outside endangers chil- dren, adults, and pets. Parking in shade, and cracking windows open do not make a difference in the interior temperature. Never leave a child unattended in a car, even for a minute. Pets can suffer fatal heatstroke in a matter of minutes. Keep pets at home when shopping or running errands on hot summer days.

If you are a caregiver, do not leave your loved one in a car to run errands. Call the Waunakee Senior Center Case Managers to go over possible respite options.

Waunakee Police Advise Regarding Scams

The Waunakee Police Department regularly takes phone calls from people who have been contacted by someone trying to scam them. We always recommend ignoring phone calls, so- cial media requests, or emails in which you do not know the source of. If you do happen to communicate with someone you suspect to be a scammer, use the philosophy of “Stranger Danger” with the person. Phone numbers and emails can now be spoofed, so it is easier for a scammer to purport to be someone they are not. The Waunakee Police Department has even had reports a scammer has called a person with the Waunakee Police Department’s phone number on their caller ID.

Some common “Red Flags” when speaking with or receiving an email from a scammer are:

When you receive an unexpected call, social media request, or email When a person tells you something which is too good to be true When you’re requested to provide personal information When you’re pressured to hurry up and do something quickly When a person tells you to keep something a secret When you’re told to click on a link on your computer When a person requests you send them money in an unusual way Scammers will commonly request you send them money by money transfers or ask you to purchase pre- paid financial transaction cars at stores.

Three common scams are:

Law Enforcement Scam – A scammer, claiming to be an officer or agent with a law enforcement agency, will contact you saying you are in some sort of trouble and will be arrested if you do not provide payment immediately. The Waunakee Police Department or any law enforcement agency will not solicit money from you over the phone.

Computer Software Scam – A scammer, claiming to be a representative of a computer company, will con- tact you claiming you need repairs to your computer. They will then guide you to a link to gain remote ac- cess to your computer for nefarious reasons.

Grandma/Grandpa Scam – A scammer, claiming to be your granddaughter/grandson, will call and claim they are in some sort of trouble while in another state/country. They will request you send money to them or their lawyer.

Remember to follow your intuition. If something feels like a scam, it probably is. Your personal information such as address, name, relatives, and phone number are likely somewhere online where a scammer can easily find and use to manipulate you.

The Waunakee Police Department non-emergency phone number is (608) 849-4523. We are happy to help and answer any questions you may have at any time.

Be Aware ~ Current Scams & Frauds

There is a new twist to the Grandparent scam. This scam still starts with a phone call from someone pretending to be a grandchild but instead of requesting gift cards or wire transfer, the scammer states someone will come to your door to pick up cash or pose as a Bail bondsman.

Another new scam takes place in rural areas. A person claiming to review a homeowner’s property lines, takes the owner outside to look at the current boundaries. While outside, a group of people goes into the home and steals valuables. 10 July 2021

CHANGE SERVICE REQUESTED

Give the Gift that Lasts In an ongoing fundraising effort, the Waunakee Senior Center is offering an opportunity to purchase an engraved tile to be placed on the patio. The Senior Center Patio, which over looks beautiful Village Park, has 136, 24” by 24” tiles. Your purchase of a whole or half engraved tile will be a lasting symbol of your generosity to your community and support of the Senior Center. You may wish to have your name, the name of a loved one, family or business engraved on a tile. The cost of a full 24” by 24” tile is $500. A half tile is $300. For an ad- ditional cost, a logo may be placed on the tile. For more information contact Cindy Mosiman, Senior Services Director at 849-8385 or stop at the Senior Center and take a look at the beautiful tiles which have already been engraved.
