Instructions for the BScBA Ambassador Presentation The purpose of these notes is to support and act as a guideline for the presentation – you can always add and emphasize your own study experiences. Have fun and remember Mikkeli Spirit! SLIDE 1 – Aalto University Start the presentation with welcoming everyone and thanking for this opportunity. With a few words, tell about your background (where you come from, what you study in Aalto University and that you are an exchange student in local university) then, if you want to, you can show the video about Aalto University (slide 2). Aalto University is a university primarily located in Espoo, Finland. It was established in 2010 as a merger of three major Finnish universities: the Helsinki University of Technology, the Helsinki School of Economics and the University of Art and Design Helsinki. The close collaboration between the scientific, business and arts communities is intended to foster multi-disciplinary education and research. The university is composed of six schools with 18 000 students and 4,000 staff members, making it Finland's second largest university. The main campus of Aalto University is located in Otaniemi, Espoo. Other functions of the School of Business are located in Töölö and Mikkeli. The School of Arts, Design and Architecture is mainly located in Arabianranta Helsinki and Pori. (All of the university's activities will be located on the Otaniemi campus by 2020 (except Mikkeli and Pori). Rankings : Number 7 among the best universities under 50 years of age in the world (Qs Top 5 Under 50) Number 2 among Nordic Business Schools (Financial European Business Schools 2016 report) Number 3 in Bachelor’s programmes in fashion in the world SLIDE 4 – What you can study in Aalto University? Aalto University offers Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees as well as post-graduate degrees, which are licentiate and doctoral degrees. In accordance with the European standards for higher education, at Aalto University, the extent of bachelor's degrees is 180 ECTS credits, and the extent of master's degrees is 120 ECTS credits. The BScBA Program is the only Bachelor’s degree program in business that is taught entirely English. Aalto University also has a Bachelor’s Degree Program in Science and Technology that is also taught in English, but in Otaniemi Campus. Aalto has to options in the Bachelor’s Program in Science and Technolgy: Digital Systems and Data Science. You can shortly tell that Aalto University has over 100 different degrees in different fields (Bachelor’s degrees mostly taught in Finnish, but Master’s and doctoral degrees also available in English). Original and highly diverse cultural life SLIDE 6 -7 Bachelor’s Programme in Science and Technology You can tell shortly that Aalto University has also a Bachelor’s Degree Program in Science and Technology that is also taught in English, but in Otaniemi Campus. Aalto has to options in the Bachelor’s Program in Science and Technolgy: Digital Systems and Data Science. o Digital Systems and Design educates specialists in various fields of digital systems. This major gives you competence in engineering design, as well as project planning and management, employing tools from embedded systems, control theory and signal processing. o Data science gives you the foundations to become a top-level expert in the modern knowledge society. What was your favorite course? What did you learn in Mikkeli that has benefitted you the most? An exciting and innovative learning environment intensive = 3-week modules, studying one subject at a time difficult and demanding you learn to be productive, like in business life time management skills cultural aspects: how our studies DIFFER from other business schools’ and how you have to be alert of different viewpoints and cultures affecting business decisions Summer courses! (don’t spend too much time) What was your favorite school project? What did you learn from it? These are just some examples of how our studies DIFFER from other business schools’ and how you get excellent chances to develop yourself professionally: you get work experience and great contacts! Most of our coursework is conducted in a similar way (case studies: you pick a company, study and examine it, and finally you combine theory and real-life case.) emphasize the learning and self-development (work experience) possibilities Our professors are professional, come from top universities all over the world It is easy to communicate with professors and ask for advice and feedback. Every professor is evaluated after courses and students can say, what was good and what to improve on. Remember to mention that our professors always provide office hours and sometimes demand that you talk with them about your project. After a course, some of them return your papers with grades and comments, so you know what to polish next time. Slide 14 – Study abroad period How did you choose your exchange country? Experience student life and culture outside Finland o study abroad is 3-6 months depending on where you go (one semester) Choose from about 50 partner universities; map is showing all of them SLIDE 15-16 What about after graduation? (Master’s degree) What are you planning to do? Further studies (examples) o The program also provides a firm foundation for advanced academic studies in Master’s programs in Finland and abroad. Students of the BScBA program have an automatic study right to Master's degree programs at the Aalto University School of Business in Helsinki. o Aalto University School of Business offers many different Master’s Programs which are taught in English o Many of our students continue their studies in Master’s programs abroad, e.g., London School of Economics, Harvard… SLIDE 17– What about after graduation? SLIDE 19–21 How to apply? 9-24 January 2018 (in March for other university programs taught in Finnish) o Make it clear that they can apply to our program only in JANUARY Application form can be filled at studyinfo.fi Three admission groups –Applicants can apply in all admission groups in which they are eligible. Most of the foreign students can apply in Admission group III: SAT Test IB & EB students apply in Admission group I: IB/EB high school diploma scores or Admission group II: IB/EB + SAT Note! If the high school you are giving the presentation in is not an IB or EB school, the students will apply in the admission group III with SAT test results.
