Wyndham.indd 1 7/27/15 1:26 PM Letter from John McConnell MEMORABLE MOMENTS

Wow, what a finish at the U.S. Open this year. Perhaps you, like me, are thinking of Dustin Johnson’s three putts to lose (unless you’re simply still in awe of Jordan Spieth’s brilliant 3-wood shot onto the 18th green to take the lead). We shouldn’t forget that Johnson hit the best drive of that day and also an unbelievable second shot under immense pressure — personally, I give him credit for hitting his first putt past the cup; I most likely would have snubbed my putter into the green while millions worldwide watched. Why do we seem to remember the failures more than the successes in golf, and in life? I think it’s how we prepare ourselves for the next challenge: We give ourselves an opportunity to come back from adversity. I’ll bet this close miss for Dustin Johnson will propel him to win a big tournament soon, rather than be the beginning of a downward trend in his golf game. After all, Americans love to pull for the underdog. I’ll be rooting hard for Johnson’s future success. Two years ago in the Wyndham Championship, Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth were tied at the end of regulation. Both young players were expected to have bright PGA futures. Selfishly, I was rooting for Spieth to win and add his name to the Sedgefield Country Club Wall of Champions alongside Hogan, Nelson, and Snead. But then, on the second playoff hole, Spieth hit a solid drive down the middle of the fairway and Reed pushed his drive to the Favorites of right, which appeared to go out of bounds. When I saw the agony on Reed’s face, his slumping John McConnell shoulders, and tears forming in the eyes of his wife (who was caddying for him that day), I shifted my allegiance. Countless times in many years of golf, I’ve felt that same feeling of Where did you learn failure while trying so hard to be a winner. to play golf and at what age? How many of you can also identify with Patrick Reed and Dustin Johnson? When have you Abingdon high school golf let the pressure overwhelm your ability to hit a great shot? At that Wyndham Championship, team. Age 13 it turned out Reed’s golf ball was still in play; I remember being truly thankful that he still had a slim chance to win. Most of us remember what happened next: Reed hit the shot of his life, Dream foursome making a birdie to win his first PGA title. Tom Morris, Donald Ross, For his part, despite the difficult Wyndham loss two years ago, Spieth has clearly gone Pete Dye — and me on to build a successful career at a young age. I wonder if he remembers that Sunday at Sedgefield, and if it helped make him a better future competitor. Favorite golf club Life always brings challenges — sometimes we win and sometimes we lose. I’ve played Putter golf for so many years because lessons learned on the course apply so well to life. As I write Favorite vacation spot this, I’ve just finished playing in the Father’s Day father-child tournament at Raleigh Country Telluride Club with my three sons. As we walked up on the green of hole 9, we remembered a specific memory with my late son, John Jr. Favorite activity Intensely competitive, John Jr. never could beat me on the golf course. Once, on that same with your family hole 9 of Raleigh Country Club, we were tied for the match: His ball was 10 feet from the hole (other than golf) and mine was 10 yards short of it. I remember asking him if he’d like to just call it a tie. Smiling, Skiing he replied, “No Dad, I finally have you.” I proceeded to chip in for a birdie and he two-putted to lose the match, much to his dismay. Recalling that match on Father’s Day, though, wasn’t about Favorite song A tie between Amazing who won or lost; it was about the time spent together. I like to think John Jr. was smiling while Grace played by a Scottish we reminisced, too. We all treasure the memories created on the golf course. This summer, bagpiper and the Va. TO SAY THAT THE WYNDHAM CHAMPIONSHIP has flourished since moving back to Sedgefield Country Club, one of the courses on which it was founded in 1938, is an understatement. The tournament was near extinction, but title sponsorship from Wyndham Worldwide in 2007 and the move back to Sedgefield in 2008 were major building blocks in the tournament’s resurrection. When McConnell Golf purchased Sedgefield from the membership in 2011, owner John McConnell poured massive funds into the property for tremendous upgrades. Today, Sedgefield Country Club is a jewel in the McConnell Golf lineup, a fitting home for North Carolina’s oldest PGA TOUR event. A month before the 76th annual Wyndham Championship, McConnell Golf THE MAGAZINE Publisher Steve Mitchem sat down with Wyndham Vacation Ownership VP of Sports and Corporate Partnerships Kevin Rinker, former PGA TOUR golfer and current PGA TOUR radio commentator John Maginnes, Wyndham Championship Tournament Director Mark Brazil, and Sedgefield Director of Golf Rocky Brooks. They discussed all things Wyndham, and it wasn’t long before McConnell Golf’s role in the tournament’s return to the upper echelon of PGA TOUR events took center stage. JOHN GILLOOLY JOHN

GROWING UP, MY FAMILY ATE THE MAJORITY OF OUR meals together, and my mother usually prepared them. Saturday evenings, though, were reserved for my dad and his vintage charcoal grill. It sat on the patio, right outside our kitchen’s sliding glass doors. After a long day of yard work (with lots of breaks to play in the creek), I would join him in the preparations. First, he discarded the previous weekend’s ashy remains. Then, he built a precise pyramid of charcoal briquettes before giving it a good douse of lighter fluid. We’d wait ten minutes, allowing the fluid to soak into the briquettes before setting them ablaze. As soon as the aroma began to fill the air, my mouth would water in anticipation. It then became a waiting game – for what seemed like an eternity – until the coals were the perfect temperature and color for us to begin. Proper grilling is done over embers and not flames. We had a solid rotation of proteins on our grill, especially during the summer months: steaks, hand-pattied burgers, hot dogs, BBQ chicken, pork chops, and the occasional piece of locally caught fish. Our sides would come from the kitchen, except when we had corn-on-the-cob or some vegetables grilled to perfection in aluminum foil. My memory still savors the food that graced the glowing embers of our old-fashioned

ESCAPE & RESET A few days at the lush and secluded Musgrove Mill Golf Club is an idyllic yet active retreat.

BY MATT MCCONNELL

WHEN IT CAME TIME TO PLAN A recent guys’ weekend, we knew it would be a golf trip. But that was only the beginning. We wanted our stay to really feel like a getaway — we needed to escape our daily grind, a little bit of adventure, and an off-the-beaten path kind of setting. Musgrove Mill was therefore a natural fit. The Arnold Palmer designed course, nestled at the base of the Appalachian Mountain foothills and etched along the banks of the Enoree River, is a property with facilities that are serene and comforting.

Settling In Driving through the rolling hills of upstate South Carolina into The Mill felt like entering an enclave. A few wild creatures greeted us — deer, turkey, and even a fox — during our mile-long drive to the main clubhouse. The staff upstaged them, though: we were immediately and warmly greeted and given the keys to our spot for the weekend, Lee Cottage. The Mill

HOME LAWN CARE

In North and South Carolina, homeowners have either warm weather or cool weather grasses

BY MICHAEL SHOUN, VICE PRESIDENT OF AGRONOMY

AS I TRAVEL FROM THE MOUNTAINS TO THE COAST TO visit our golf courses, I can’t help but notice the meticulously cared-for lawns. While some of these lawns are maintained with professional help, I believe many residents take pride in rising to the challenge of doing it themselves. To prepare for fall and winter weather, here’s a bit of turfgrass advice to enhance your yardwork routine late this summer. Before we dive in, identify your grass and soil type. Since McConnell Golf members span the Carolinas, homeowners may have one of two kinds of grass in their yards: warm weather or cold weather grass. An insider tip is to get a soil test done by your county cooperative exten- sion agent, which will help you better identify your specific needs.

Outdoor adventures in Uwharrie mean the sky is the limit

BY BRAD KING

IT’S TIME TO THINK BEYOND GOLF and tennis. A visit to Old North State Club can now include fishing, stand-up paddle-boarding, off-roading, and hiking. McConnell Golf’s partnership with Uwharrie National Forest has continued to grow as the area welcomes with open arms our McConnell Golf members and their guests. “The adventures in Uwharrie are another element that sets McConnell Golf apart,” says MCG Director of Marketing Lauren Barry. “We cannot wait for our members to experience these offerings.” MICCICHE PHOTOGRAPHY MICCICHE

BEAT THE HEAT Simple fitness tips to keep in mind this season

TIME OUTDOORS REIGNS SUPREME DURING THESE summer months. We all want to take advantage of longer days, whether it’s gearing up to walk 18 holes, playing a doubles match, or swimming a few laps in the pool. It’s also vacation season, which means that there is a great chance for breaks in your workout rou- tine. Tundy Magyar, a personal trainer and fitness instructor at TPC Wakefield Plantation’s Sports Club, says traveling and sacrificing fitness time is something of the past. With a few helpful tips, Tundy shares her words on how you can remain fit anytime of the year. O’BRIEN PHOTOGRAPHY O’BRIEN

Think of it as doing your ABCs.

Ankle rolls: Stretch your leg out slightly in front of you and rotate your ankles in circular motions, left and right. Repeat on your other leg. “This will get your blood flowing,” notes Magyar. Back release: “This exercise can be done at your seat or in a waiting area.” Bend forward at your hips and let your chest puff out, then roll back on your pelvis and round your back. “Keep undulating the spine by moving forward and back, forward and back.” Chair twists: Sit up tall and grab both sides of your seat.
