FORD and K. G. McWHIRTER Genetics Laboratory, Department of Zoology, Oxford Received5.X.6t 1.INTRODUCTION WEhave already demonstrateddemonstrated thatthat thethe A'IaniolaManiola jurtina populations in Southern England, from West Devon to the North Sea, are char- acterised by relatively low average spot-numbers, having a female frequency-distribution unimodal at o spots. Also that in East Cornwall thethe spottingspotting hashas aa higherhigher averageaverage valuevalue inin bothboth sexessexes andand isis bimodal, bimodal, at o and 2 spots, in the females (Creed et al., 1959). In 1956 we studied the transition between thethe twotwo typestypes inin aa transecttransect runningrunning twotwo milesmiles south of Launceston, approximately midway between the north and south Coastscoasts ofof thethe Devon-CornwallDevon-Cornwall peninsula.peninsula. We found that the one form of spotting changed abruptly to the other in a few yards without any barrier between them and that the distinction between the two increased as they approached each other (the "reversedine " effect). TheseThese features features persistedpersisted thethe followingfollowing year, yet the point of transition had shifted; for the East Cornish type had advanced three miles eastwards, indicating that the two spot-distributions represent alternative types of stabilisation. This situation is so exceptional that it seemed essential to test whether or not it is widespread along the interface between the Southern English and East Cornish forms and if it were maintained in subsequent years. The results of that investigation are described in this article.

Devonshire Parish Registers. General Editor: THOS. M. BLAGG, F.S.A. v.^ VOL. II. Edited by A. TERRY SATTERFORD. Condon Issued to the Subscribers by Phillimore & Co., Ltd. 124, Chancery Lane. 1915- PREFACE. Six years have elapsed since tlie first volume of Devonshire Marriage Registers was issued and during those years the work- has been practically at a standstill, in strange contrast to the adjoining counties of Cornwall, Somerset, and Dorset, where the Marriage Registers of 133, 107 and 58 parishes respectively have now been printed. This lack of progress in Devon has been due partly to the death of Mr. W. P. W. Phillimore to whose inception the entire Series is due and who edited the first volume, but chiefly to the poor support forthcoming from Devon men, in comparison with that accorded to the Series in other counties by those interested in their Records. Thus the first volume for Devonshire was issued at a substantial loss. Now that the work has been resumed, it is hoped that the support received will be more proportionate to the size and importance of the county, and so will enable the Devonshire Marriage Registers to be printed on a uniform plan and with such regularity of output as will render them safe from further loss and readily accessible to the student and genealogical searcher.

In 1907 we commenced a research for family history, necessary to join some American patriotic organization. At that time it was not easy, for only a few persons, compara tively speaking, had considered the importance of gathering data or preserving family history, so our research extended through many volumes of books and magazines, and innumerable pages were turned before efforts were rewarded which enabled us to connect the past with the present.
