. Practitioners and relevant groups: Farm and livestock owners with a stake in breeding camels in order to benefit from them.

. Geographical location and range of thé élément: Distributed across ail régions of thé United Arab Emirates.

. Brief description of thé élément: Thé Arabian Peninsula was known throughout thé âges for breeding and raising camels becausetheyarewell adapted ta thé environment of thé région, with its water scarcity, végétationcover and grazing land. (l) Camels are able ta withstand extended periods with little food and water and tolerate thé hot climate. For thèse reasons inhabitants of thé région grew ta appreciate camels, developed a close connection with them and a keennessto breed and own them and hâve grown very fond ofthem. (l) Camels: Also referred to as alboosh. Alboosh also means a mixed group of people and it may be said in thé local dialert that "There came hawash and al boosh of people" meaning that a large group of people with kids came. Al boosh is also thé plural for boosh. Faleh Hantai, Colloquial Dictionaryofthe United Arab Emirates, supervised by Ghassan Al Hassan, Ministry of Information and Culture, Abu Dhabi, 1978, p. 95.

In thé beginning, we review thé most important and most famous breeds, including Dabian, AI-Wari, Asifar(2), and Al Misk. Thé interviewée SaifSatem Al Nuaimi (3) and Abdul Aziz Al Junaibi (4) mentioned breeds such as Museihan, Al Shaheen, Soghan(5), Jabbar, and Mayyas. Hamad bin Umairah Al Shamsi (6) said that thoroughbreds also included breed by thé late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan, may he rest in peace, and which was known as 'Samhon'. This camel produced several thoroughbred lineages such as thé Asayel breed, thé breed, and thé Maghazi breed. Ail thèse Samhon descended breeds are still with us today.

As for thé tadhmeer (training) stage, thé interviewer Hamad Al Shamsi, said: "We begin this stage by taking thé camel that has been of a fasf for week and tie to a stake (al- khayah)to teach it to walk in circles. Then we walk it and feed it by hand. Then we spend a week training it to mount and dismount riders and how ta be steered with reigns. Then we teach it thé 'manakh' where it's bound by a rope and someone calls out to it repeatedly until it gets used to following instructions. Once it learns thèse commands (7), it is blessed and thé ropes removed for its comfort.

Thé interviewée Al Nuaimi said that spécial attention is paid to racing breeds in terms of eating and drinking. They are fed plants such as Thamam, Alaaqa, Alsmer, Al Ghaf, and Sidr, as well as dates (ifthey are avaitable to thé owner), milk, honey and fat. And they are trained constantly from a young âge.

Thé interviewée Abdul Aziz Al Junaibi, tells us that in training thé camels to race: "We hold thé camel from free grazing for two months before thé race and run it for three kilometers a day for a month, then it is branded and ready ta enter thé races."

In thé past, thoroughbreds used to run long distances, depending on their âges. Today races are more organised and camels of différent âge groups race together.

Abdul Aziz Al Junaibitells us that there are many types of camels, including race camels, décorative or cérémonialcamels, and dairy camels. Hamad bin Omairah Al Shamsi added two groups and thèse are grazing and racing camels (8). Grazing camels include thé Qahhar(9), Azzaf(lO), Madani and Al Mikaddah(ll).

(2) Asifar: This camel is known for itsyellowish offwhite colourthatis almost beige. Thèse lightcoloured camels are known for long distance . (3) Field interview with Saif Salem Al Nuaimi, Al Ain City, Zakher, 6/2/2019. (4) Field interview with Abdul Aziz bin Salloum bin Thabit bin Said Al Junaibi, in thé cityofAI Ain, on 5/2/2019. (5) Soghan is known for its short fur and long legs that help it run faster. It is known for starting slow but picking up speed quickly and has long breath and stamina for long races. See: Al Dhafra Magazine, No. 9, Tuesday January 28, P. 94. (6) Interview with Hamad bin Omairah Al Shamsi, held in thé Archives Unit, 3/2/2019. (7) Répétition helps in training thé camel. (8) Racing breeds: Known to be tall, graceful, thin, and lightweight, with a long neck and a wide, deep chest that shows strength and agility. See Abdullah Zayed et al., Camels in thé Arab World, Omar AI-Mukhtar University, Casablanca, 1991, P. 53. (9) Qahhar: Birthed by a female aver two years old. (10) Azzaf: Lessthan a year old. (11) Al Mikaddah: Used for travelling long distances.

SaifAI Nuaimi explainsthatthe Khawawirisa dairycamel. Itis heavywithfull méat and fur. As for thé racing camels, they are known by their build which is lighter with less méat and a more agile build from thé Khawawir.AI-Shamsi explained that différent breeds hâve différent colours -yetlow, cream, light brown, dark brown, light red, dark red, and white.

Hamad Al Shamsi pointed out that it is important to choose thé right bull camel to breed with thé cow carnet from which you want offspring. There are différent breeds for racing and for dairy camels. It is said that ta breed a milking camel it's important to use a bull whose mother was heavy with milk. As for thé racing breed, you must choose thé thoroughbred camel (Aseel) such as Al Rees or Al Lughzwhich are known for speed.

SaifAI Nuaimi points out that during thé wedding or célébrations, people gatherand place signposts for thé race. This would sometimes be a Ghatrah (head band) or a robe. Thé place where thé race is planned in advance and people gather there, men, women, and children. Thestartofthe race, however, isexclusivelyformenandthe winner gets thé item used as a marker for a prize.
