RIESLING 2012

REGION Clare Valley

VINTA GE CONDITIONS Growing conditions leading up to 2012 were relatively mild, with regular spring rains promoting excellent vine canopy growth. Budburst was approximately 10 days earlier than 'average', and this early start flowed through until time with most varieties harvested 1 to 2 weeks earlier than in a 'typical' year. Harvest conditions were excellent with only one substantial rain event occurring during harvest. Whilst it happened after most white varieties were picked, it had a positive effect on the red varieties, appearing to freshen them up, particularly the dry-grown blocks. Ideal ripening and flavor development conditions persisted to the end of April when the majority of the harvest was completed. Overall, yields were somewhat lower than long-term averages but our winemakers report that quality is outstanding across all varieties, with intense colour and excellent flavour development.

COLOUR At release, the is a very pale straw colour with a slight green tinge to the edge.

NOSE The wine displays zesty lemon and lime aromas along with faint orange blossom and talc.

PALATE This particular Clare is still tight and restrained with a linear focus to the palate and purity of fruit flavours. There are lashings of fresh lemon/lime juice characters up front and a slate-like minerality across the mid-palate. It is backed up by a persistent and refreshing lime acid finish.

CELLARING NOTES Crafted for immediate enjoyment but will cellar over a long term under ideal conditions.

EXPERT REVIEWS

RIESLING 2012

4 STARS Top quality wine with very intriguing floral/citrus bouquet and well-balanced, citrusy palate with an extremely tight acid backbone. JAN 2012, , Winestate ...... Taylors St Andrews Clare Valley Single Riesling 2012 is from vines first planted on terra rossa in 1992. This youthful, fresh riesling has years of glory ahead, but meanwhile has the fragrance of orange blossom with an elegance and crisp, steely definition which slipped down well with a plate of oysters. JAN 2013, Ross Noble, Mount Barker Courier ...... The historic St Andrews vineyard bought by the Clare Valley’s largest holding of vines, Taylors, in 1995 has become the source of its premium wines. The Taylors St Andrews Clare Valley Single Vineyard Riesling 2012 is from vines first planted on terra rossa in 1992. This youthful, fresh riesling has years of glory ahead, but meanwhile has the fragrance of orange blossom with an elegance and crisp, steely definition which slipped down well with a plate of oysters. JAN 2013, Ross Noble, The Courier ...... There is nothing flamboyant or immediately inviting about this wine right now. It is a steely ball of determination, tightly wound and in need of age. By contrast to some of the lighter, approachable 2012s, and there are many, this is a vin de garde and it will repay the patience of its keeper. With decent phenolic friction and a superb lime juice theme this stunning single vineyard Riesling is designed to age for a decade or more and it will do so without breaking sweat. It is nice to know that a handful of top end wines are still as carefully assembled as this hand-crafted beauty. JAN 2013, Matthew Jukes, Top 100 Wines ...... 93/100 It’s the 40th vintage of the Taylor whites so they’ve shipped them out in a posh black box and sent it out to the wine pundits.2012 is a great vintage to celebrate so they are probably relieved it was not a year earlier. Lime and green herbs, a slight hint of hay and chalk. The palate is electric, all coiled citrus with an amazing line that lingers on with bracingly fresh acids. Great stuff, but in all honesty needs time, possibly 3-5 years judging by the 2007 reviewed below. JAN 2013, Patrick Haddock, Wining Pom ...... 96/100 2012 Taylors St andrews (A$40) is a wine of two parts. The nose is developing beautifully with hints of lemon curd and marmalade adding complexity, while the palate remains taut with distinct acidity. taylorswines.com.au NAMED AFTER THE HISTORIC PROPERTY FIRST ESTABLISHED IN 1892. JAN...... 2014, Nick Bulleid MW, Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine 90 This is textbook Clare Valley dry Riesling, with lime sherbet aromas and flavors that come across as slightly one- dimensional at this young age. It’s medium bodied, with a slightly dusty texture that’s especially notable on the long finish. Drink now– 2025. JAN 2015, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Enthusiast ...... Taylors 2012 St Andrews riesling. This wine is starting just now to show its darker and deeper aromatics, like brown-sugared lemon curd or caramelised brulee, but underpinning this is its lemon juice acidity and solid slate- like palate with lip-smacking twang and pithiness.
