BIOGRAPHIES

Dr. Paul Abegg is Associate Professor of Music at Dixie State University where he serves as String Studies Coordinator, teaches violin, and conducts the Dixie State Symphony Orchestra (DSSO) and Dixie State Chamber Orchestra (DSCO). He has also taught at Brigham Young University and Olivet College (MI). Dr. Abegg has presented master classes at Eastern Washington University, Whitworth College, Western Kentucky University, Utah Valley University, and Brigham Young University Idaho and served as an adjudicator at numerous competitions and festivals in Arizona, Maine, Michigan, Utah, Washington and Nevada. His students have won awards and have been accepted at prestigious music schools and festivals such as Boston Conservatory, Michigan State University, National Orchestral Institute, Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific, and Brevard Music Center. He is a graduate of Michigan State University, where he earned a Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music in violin performance. He received a Bachelor of Music from Brigham Young University in violin performance and pedagogy. He has participated in master classes with Shinichi Suzuki, Daniel Heifetz, Joseph Silverstein, Zvi Zeitlin, and Charles Castleman. Teachers include Percy Kalt, Nell Gotkovsky, Harry Kirby, Roy Malan, Walter Verdehr, I-Fu Wang, and Robert Dan. As a soloist he has performed recitals throughout the United States as well as in Japan, Brazil, France, and England. His Chamber music experience includes studies at Kneisel Hall (ME), and performances with the Colson String Ensemble in France. He has performed with the Lansing, Jackson, Flint, Kalamazoo, Flagstaff, Utah, Ballet West, Phoenix, Spokane and the Malaysia Philharmonic symphonies. In 2007 he performed in the Northwest Bach Festival under the direction of Gunther Schuller. His participation in orchestra festivals include the Gilmore Piano Competition Orchestra (MI), Pine Mountain Music Festival (MI), Brevard Music Center, (NC), National Orchestral Institute (MD), Great Music West Festival (UT), Bear Lake Music Festival(UT), and the Grand Teton Music Festival Seminar, (WY).

Mindy Arrington, a violin instructor and performer, has enjoyed having music be a part of her life since she was very young. In her youth she was a soloist with the Murray High School orchestra as well as the Murray Symphony. During that time, she also was a finalist in the Utah Sterling Scholar Competition in the music category. She graduated from Brigham Young University with a BFA in Violin Performance. She was privileged to study with Monte Belknap and assistant him as a teaching assistant. Traveling with the BYU Chamber Orchestra and serving as the Principal Violinist in the BYU Philharmonic was a highlight of her time at Brigham Young University. Continuing her education, she won a Masters Assistantship at the University of Utah for Violin Performance. She was also a guest concertmaster of the Philharmonia in her time there. Traveling, Mindy was able to study with faculty of the Kiev Music Conservatory while living in Ukraine and studied Celtic fiddling in Ireland. She is a certified Kodaly music educator receiving certification from the Intermuse Academy. As a Suzuki Instructor she has certified in the first five levels of that method. Currently Mindy is working on her own unique scale and technique system. Mindy has had the opportunity to perform as Assistant Concert Master for the National Orchestral Institute in Washington D.C. She has subbed for Ballet West, was a member of the Orchestra on Temple Square, part of The Mollies, a folk band, and an active recording and gigging artist in the Salt Lake area. She was involved in the recording for the 2011 NBA Finals, the 2012 Olympics to be used by NBC, and various other film and television scores.

Dr. Marcel Bowman has wide variety of performance and teaching experience. He earned a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance and Pedagogy from Brigham Young University, a Master of Music in Violin Performance, and a Ph.D. in Music Composition from the University of Utah. Marcel is a violinist with the Ballet West Orchestra, the Utah Chamber Artists, Sinfonia Salt Lake, and the Utah Lyric Opera and has performed professionally 12 years with the Utah Symphony, among other ensembles in Utah, Idaho and Montana. He is also a regular studio recording artist. Previously, Marcel has taught music courses at Brigham Young University-Provo, BYU-Idaho, the University of Utah, and Snow College, and has coached and directed at several youth music ensembles and festivals. He is currently the Director of Orchestras at Timpview High School. Marcel enjoys performing and recording music with his wife and four children, who are also professional musicians.

With her MEd and BA in English, with a minor in music from the University of Utah, Kirsten Candland began her public school teaching orchestra in Jordan School District at Bingham Middle School. She has taught in Washington County School District for the past 21 years, beginning with Pine View Middle and High Schools. She currently teaches elementary through 7th grade at Sunrise Ridge Intermediate, and 8th-12th grade at Desert Hills Middle and Desert Hills High School. She is married to Ed Candland, orchestra director at Fossil Ridge and Pine View Middle High Schools; they have three musical children. As a certified Suzuki violin teacher, she maintains a private studio, and is serves as the host for the annual graduation recital for the Southern Utah region of SAU. She and Ed organize the annual Southern Utah Strings Festival, and directed the Zion Youth Symphony Orchestra and Zion Youth Camerata for many seasons. She is serving on the Orchestra Committee for the Utah Music Educators Association, and is a member of the American String Teachers Association. Being an All-State Orchestra member, participating in summer camps throughout Utah and Arizona, and having toured with the Rocky Mountain Youth Camerata, Mormon Youth Symphony, Utah Valley Youth Symphony, and school orchestras, she has enjoys watching students of her own thrive in the rich life experiences musical study offers. She values the association with fine people that musical ensembles provide. She has studied with John Chatelain, Lynnette Stewart, Lawrence Sardoni, and Dennis Hansen.

Linda Ghidossi-DeLuca is a graduate of the of Music where she received bachelors and master’s degrees in music performance under the tutelage of the renowned Lillian Fuchs. She has performed with Jeffrey Kahane, Yo-Yo Ma, Pamela Frank, and Lorraine Hunt. She was the Principal Violist of four San Francisco Bay Area orchestras: The New Century Chamber Orchestra, the Santa Rosa Symphony, Berkeley Symphony and the Vallejo Symphony. A former member of the Sonoma State University music faculty, she was also the founder/musical director of the Young Peoples Chamber Orchestra of the Santa Rosa Symphony, a conductorless ensemble modeled after the New Century Chamber Orchestra. Ms. Ghidossi-DeLuca has created her own CD, recording the first three solo Cello Suites by Bach on viola; the second three Cello Suites are planned for 2016. Her other recordings include a Grammy-nominated CD of works by Dimitri Shostakovich, featuring the New Century Chamber Orchestra, and works by Frank Martin, featuring the Berkeley Symphony. Linda Ghidossi-DeLuca has performed as a soloist on numerous occasions. The most recent work was the Walton Viola Concerto with the Vallejo Symphony, conducted by David Ramadanoff. She has also premiered and recorded works by new composers such as Thomas Goss and Kurt Rhode. Ms Ghidossi-DeLuca is currently the string orchestra director and band co-director of the Vista at Entrada School of Performing Arts and Technology in Ivins, the adjunct viola/violin instructor at Dixie State University in St. George, and she also performs as a member of the string section of the Tuacahn Amphitheatre Orchestra for the summer theatre productions as well as performing as principal violist with the Southwest Symphony.

Double bassist and music technologist Dr. Robert Matheson incorporates elements of classical, jazz, and contemporary music into his original works. In his solo performances, he achieves a fluid interaction between acoustic and electro- acoustic music. His performance setup allows him to perform live electro-acoustic music while maintaining the integrity of the natural, acoustic sound of the bass. Robert has performed with ensembles representing a wide range of musical genres, including the Ironwood Duo, Portable Masterpieces, and the Tucson Chamber Orchestra. Solo and ensemble performances have taken him throughout the western and midwestern United States. Robert Matheson received a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in bass performance from the University of Arizona where he studied bass performance with Patrick Neher and music technology with Dr. Norman Weinberg and Dr. Craig Walsh. He previously studied bass performance with Barry Green at the University of California, Santa Cruz and Dr. David Young at California State University, Long Beach. Robert lives in Saint George, Utah where he teaches double bass, music technology, and musicology at Dixie State University and performs in the orchestra at Tuacahn Center for the Arts. Monika Rosborough-Bowman is currently Faculty at Utah Valley University and cellist with the Ballet West Orchestra, Orchestra at Temple Square, Cathedral of the Madeleine Players, Utah Lyric Opera, and the Utah Baroque Ensemble. She has performed with the Utah Symphony, Utah Chamber Artists, among others, and is a regular recording studio artist. She has performed and recorded with artists Andrea Bocelli, Bryn Terfel, and many others. Recently she has recorded Handel’s Messiah with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra. Monika has a Master’s degree in Cello Performance and Pedagogy from Brigham Young University. She has performed throughout most of Western Europe, with solo recitals in Utah as well as Switzerland and her native Italy. Previously, she has served on the music faculties of Brigham Young University-Provo and BYU-Idaho and has coached and directed at several youth music ensembles and festivals. Monika enjoys performing and recording music with her husband and four children, who are also professional musicians.

Dr. Ka-Wai Yu is Assistant Professor of Music at Dixie State University, where he teaches cello and directs the string chamber music program. He previously taught at Eastern Illinois University and Indiana Wesleyan University. In great demand as a clinician, Dr. Yu has given master classes in numerous universities and institutions in North America and Asia. He has taught in music camps and workshops in Illinois, Georgia and Michigan, as well as in Hong Kong. He has served as adjudicator, held clinics, and guest-conducted regularly at various high schools, youth orchestras, and string festivals in the Southwest and Midwest, USA. He is the President of the Cello Society of Southern Utah and directs the DSU Cello Festival that he founded. He serves on the Utah Chapter of the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) board as President. Dr. Yu is currently the Principal Cellist of Southwest Symphony Orchestra. He is vivid as a chamber musician, and has been a member of the Zion Trio and the period-instrument ensembles Cosmopolitan Baroque and Concentus. His recent solo performances include concerto appearances with Chamber Orchestra Kremlin, Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra Illinois, Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota Chamber Orchestra, and Hong Kong Chamber Orchestra. His performances have been broadcast on RTHK and WILL-FM. Dr. Yu obtained his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where he studied with cellist Brandon Vamos of the Grammy-winning Pacifica Quartet. He also holds a Master of Music in Cello Performance from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and a Bachelor of Arts in Music with first-class honors from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
