I hope that your life will be different because of our time together. iv Abstract Progressive education has a long history within the American K-12 education system dating back to the late 1800s. During this period, two very distinct ideologies represented progressive education: 1) administrative progressives supporting standardization as a means of efficiency and 2) pedagogical progressives supporting child-centered learning based upon a well- rounded education. This study looks at 82 contemporary pedagogical progressive schools to identify common characteristics. Child-centered learning, community integration, and democratic decision-making were the three overarching philosophies covered in this study. Data was collected through an online survey of school leaders. The majority of research surrounding progressive education is qualitative and focuses on the experience of teachers, students, parents, or administrators, and not the characteristics of the school. This study is a mixed methods study that uses quantitative and qualitative methods to identify qualities found in contemporary progressive schools. Findings are intended to help school leaders plan for growth and sustainability. A 6-point scale was used to gather school leaders’ level of disagreement or agreement about whether particular educational practices associated with each philosophy occur within their school. Mean scores for the educational practice items for each philosophy were the independent variables in the regression analyses. A 10-point semantic differential rating scale was used to identify the school leaders’ perceptions of whether their school was adhering to each philosophy. These ratings were used as the dependent variable in the regression analyses. Significant educational practice items for each philosophy

    NASP Position Statement on Early Childhood Assessment The National Association of School Psychologists believes that early identification of developmental and learning problems in preschool and primary grade children is essential because of children’s broad and rapid development. Intervention services for these children’s psychological and developmental difficulties are essential, beneficial, and cost- effective. Because the accurate and fair identification of the developmental needs of young children is critical to the design, implementation, and success of appropriate interventions school psychologists must play a key role. Evidence from research and practice in early childhood assessment indicates that issues of technical adequacy are more difficult to address with young children who have short attention spans and go through periods of variable, rapid development. Therefore, standardized assessment procedures should be used with great caution in educational decision-making because such tools are inherently less accurate and less predictive when used with young children. Multidisciplinary team assessments must include multiple sources of information, multiple approaches to assessment, and multiple settings in order to yield a comprehensive understanding of children’s skills and needs. Therefore, assessments should center on the child in the family system and home environment, both substantial influences on the development of young children. Similarly, families’ self-identified needs should drive the decision-making process concerning the identification of child and family services. Because categorical identification of infants, toddlers, and young children is ineffective in meeting the special needs of young children, assessment of infants and young children requires specialized training and skills beyond those required for the assessment of older children.

Any two educators who describe themselves as sympathetic to this tradition may well see it differently, or at least disagree about which features are the most important. Talk to enough progressive educators, in fact, and you’ll begin to notice certain paradoxes: Some people focus on the unique needs of individual students, while oth- ers invoke the importance of a community of learners; some describe learning as a process, more journey than destination, while others believe that tasks should result in authentic products that can be shared.[1] What It Is Despite such variations, there are enough elements on which most of us can agree so that a common core of progressive education emerges, however hazily.

Day 2010 Abstract Vocabulary knowledge impacts every area of reading achievement, yet important words are often not explicitly taught. There is published research to support the usage of direct instruction to teach vocabulary to younger children, but there are limited studies that have investigated the effects of direct instruction in teaching vocabulary to high school students with reading disabilities. The purpose of the current study was to compare the effects of the traditional approach (using context and the dictionary) to a direct instruction approach (REWARDS Plus scripted curriculum) when teaching science vocabulary words to high school students with reading disabilities. The study included three participants with reading disabilities in the 11th and 12th grades. An alternating treatments design counterbalanced across participants was used to compare the two methods of instruction. Traditional instruction included the methods employed in most high schools where students are asked to use the context of the sentence or a dictionary to figure out the meaning of unknown words. Direct instruction included the REWARDS Plus program, a published, scripted curriculum that utilizes explicit, systematic instruction. Data were collected on lesson assessments, maintenance assessments, generalization writing samples, and comprehension writing samples.

    Education and Society Program The Role of Interim Assessments in a Comprehensive Assessment System: A Policy Brief By Marianne Perie, Scott Marion, Brian Gong (National Center for the Improvement of Educational Assessment) and Judy Wurtzel (The Aspen Institute) November 2007 ABOUT THIS REPORT School districts increasingly see interim assessments as an important element in their instructional improvement strategy and are implementing interim assessments district-wide in multiple grades and content areas. Yet, they face significant design and implementation challenges to realizing the potential of interim assessments to improve teaching and learning. The Aspen Institute Education and Society Program and Achieve, Inc. partnered with the National Center for the Improvement of Educational Assessment to develop this policy brief. Our goals are to clarify how interim assessments fit into the landscape of formative assessment and to offer recommenda - tions to districts on the appropriate use of interim assessments as part of a broader assessment system.
