Minnesota Wild Names Bob Woods As an Assistant Coach

For Immediate Release Contacts: Aaron Sickman (651) 602-6009 Saturday, June 24, 2017 Carly Peters (651) 602-6034 Megan Kogut (651) 312-3439 MINNESOTA WILD NAMES BOB WOODS AS AN ASSISTANT COACH SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota Wild General Manager Chuck Fletcher today announced the National Hockey League (NHL) club has named Bob Woods an assistant coach for the club. Woods joins the staff of Head Coach Bruce Boudreau, along with Assistant Coaches John Anderson and Darby Hendrickson, Goaltending Coach Bob Mason, Video Coach Jonas Plumb and Strength and Conditioning Coach Sean Skahan. Woods, 49 (1/24/68), joins the Wild after serving as an assistant coach for the Buffalo Sabres during the 2016-17 season. Before working with the Sabres, the LeRoy, Saskatchewan, native spent two seasons (2014- 16) as general manager and head coach of the Saskatoon Blades in the Western Hockey League (WHL). This is the fourth time Woods will serve as an assistant coach on Boudreau’s staff, previously with the Anaheim Ducks (2012-14) and Washington Capitals (2009-12) in the NHL, and with the Hershey Bears in the American Hockey League (AHL) from 2005-07. Woods was Boudreau’s successor in Hershey, becoming head coach 15 games into the 2007-08 season after Boudreau was named head coach in Washington. Woods helped Hershey win the AHL’s Calder Cup championship in 2006 and 2009. A former defenseman, Woods played professional hockey for 13 seasons (1988-2001), including stops in the IHL, ECHL and AHL. He won a Calder Cup while playing with Hershey in 1997, and won the ECHL’s Kelly Cup with the Mississippi Sea Wolves in 1999 – where Boudreau served as head coach. Woods was inducted into the ECHL Hall of Fame in 2012 and was originally selected by New Jersey in the 10th round (201st overall) of the 1988 NHL Entry Draft. He and his wife, Mary Sue, have two sons: Brendan, who is a member of the Carolina Hurricanes organization, and Colin, who plays hockey at Stevenson University. Coaches, fans describe joy of hockey as Caps come to town Ice hockey might be fast-paced and even brutal at times, but the winter sport has elicited a warm response from fans and players. “What’s not to love?” quipped Calvert Hall head coach Mike Shramek about a month before the official Oct. 1 start of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association season. The New York native said that as a boy, he looked forward to 6 a.m. practices on Saturdays. “I consider myself someone who loves all sports in general, but when I began playing hockey, it was the one sport I loved to practice,” said Shramek, who is entering his 14th coaching season at the Towson school. “It was just pure, pure enjoyment. I loved every minute.” Although it’s been nearly 15 years since the Baltimore Bandits represented Charm City in the American Hockey League (the last game for Baltimore was played in 1997), enthusiasm and passion for the sport continue to grow. That enthusiasm will likely be present in Baltimore’s 1st Mariner Arena Sept. 20 when the nearby Washington Capitals face off against the Nashville Predators in a preseason game dubbed the Baltimore Hockey Classic. “Enthusiasm is easy when you’re part of the greatest game there is to play,” said Rob Merson, head ice hockey coach for Mount St. Joseph High School in Irvington. “When you see firsthand the effort put forth by our athletes even before they hit the ice, you can’t help but to be excited for the upcoming season.” Arlington, Va., resident Peter Robbio let The Catholic Review know via Twitter that he will be attending the Caps preseason game.
