AZAZEL IN EARLY JEWISH TRADITION ROBERT HELM Louisville, KY 40204 The term "Azazel," which appears four times in the prescriptions for the Day of Atonement (Lev 16:8, 10, 26), has elicited much debate. Although many scholars have identified Azazel with a demonic figure to whom the sin-laden scapegoat was dispatched,' the term remains undefined in the biblical text. This article will attempt to demonstrate that two noncanonical Jewish works, I Enoch and the Apocalypse of Abraham, reveal a tradition in which Azazel was regarded as a demon, and in which the scapegoat rite was utilized as a symbol of demonic expulsion. Hence it will be argued that a segment of ancient Jewish apocalypticists found a symbol of eschatological victory over demonic forces in the rite involving Azazel and the scapegoat. Azazel in 1 Enoch Although 1 Enoch is attributed to the antediluvian prophet by that name, its pseudonymous nature is readily apparent. The bar/bat mitzvah experience, which literally means “son/daughter of the commandments,” is Judaism’s rite of passage for this remarkable time of life. The skills a young person has traditionally mastered in order to establish him/herself as a young adult in the “tribe” include publicly blessing and chanting from the Torah, leading the community in prayer, studying and sharing insights about what the Torah portion might have to teach us all. The curses imposed on the fallen angel are often seen as having cultic significance.2 In the sacerdotal framework of the Slavonic apocalypse, which is permeated with the dynamics of the Yom Kippur ritual,3 the cursing formulae delivered by the angel Yahoel, whom the text depicts as the celestial cultic servant,4 appear reminiscent of those curses bestowed on the scapegoat by the high priest on the Day of Atonement.5 Thus some have argued that the fallen angel bearing the conspicuous name Azazel6 is depicted here as the celestial scapegoat predestined to take upon itself the sins and transgressions of Abraham in order to carry them into the realm of his exile.

We argued that there were two goats because Yom Kippur represents a dual process of kappara, atonement, and tahara, purification, directed respectively at guilt and shame. But this does not explain why the two animals were required to be as similar as possible to one another, nor does it account for the role of casting lots (goralot). Presumably, these elements were designed to inspire feelings of awe and penitence on the part of the crowds that thronged the Temple on the holiest day of the year, but how and in what way? Over the centuries, the Sages sought to decipher the mystery.
