The Romanian Germans and the Securitate Heritage. an Outline of the Problem and Research Potential
The Romanian Germans and the Securitate Heritage. An Outline of the Problem and Research Potential by Florian Kührer-Wielach, Munich Abstract This article deals with the efforts to assess the Securitate files, while focusing on Romanian German writers. I address, on the one hand, the explanatory power of this type of source and, on the other hand, the effects which the opening of secret service archives has had on a specific group, in this case the Romanian Germans. On the basis of an analysis of the media discourse regarding the unofficial involvement of Romanian-German actors in the Securitate that is centered around concepts of “guilt”, “justice” and “legality”, I will outline the most important problems in the process of coming to terms with the Securitate heritage: the uncertain explanatory power and the hardly manageable amount of sources, the (delayed) need to come to terms with both the national-socialist and communist past as well as the deep involvement of affected persons in the process itself. As a potential way out of these dilemmas, I will apply a professionalized instrument of analysis to this problematic type of source, which involves a stronger focus on comparable cases and issues which overcome the ethnocentric perspective. heir names were “Moga”, “Stein Otto”, workers to Germany, but all the problems T“Cristina” or “Sorin”. Behind these these people were burdened with under the aliases were well-known personalities from authoritarian system as well. As long as the the Romanian-German community – authors, secret service archives remain closed, the dark intellectuals, teachers and journalists. After spots in many biographies only existed at the the archive of the previous Romanian secret level of assumptions and suspicions. -

1 Matt Phillips, ‘French Studies: Literature, 2000 to the Present Day’, Year’s Work in Modern Language Studies, 80 (2020), 209–260 DOI for published version: https://doi.org/10.1163/22224297-08001010 [TT] Literature, 2000 to the Present Day [A] Matt Phillips, Royal Holloway, University of London This survey covers the years 2017 and 2018 [H2]1. General Alexandre Gefen, Réparer le monde: la littérature française face au XXIe siècle, Corti, 2017, 392 pp., argues that contemporary French literature has undergone a therapeutic turn, with both writing and reading now conceived in terms of healing, helping, and doing good. G. defends this thesis with extraordinary thoroughness as he examines the turn’s various guises: as objects of literature’s care here feature the self and its fractures; trauma, both individual and collective; illness, mental and physical; mourning and forgetfulness, personal and historical; and endangered bonds, with humans and beyond, on local and global scales. This amounts to what G. calls a new ‘paradigme clinique’ and, like any paradigm shift, this one appears replete with contradictions, tensions, and opponents, not least owing to the residual influence of preceding paradigms; G.’s analysis is especially impressive when unpicking the ways in which contemporary writers negotiate their sustained attachments to a formal, intransitive conception of literature, and/or more overtly revolutionary political projects. His thesis is supported by an enviable breadth of reference: G. lays out the diverse intellectual, technological, and socioeconomic histories at work in this development, and touches on close to 200 contemporary writers. Given the broad, synthetic nature of the work’s endeavour, individual writers/works are rarely discussed for longer than a page, and though G.’s commentary is always insightful, specialists on particular authors or social/historical trends will surely find much to work with and against here. -

A Review """ Don Boozer From Elvish to Klingon: Exploring Invented Languages. Michael Adams, ed. Oxford: Oxford University Press. Nov. 2011. c.294 p. index. ISBN13: 9780192807090. $19.95. From Elvish to Klingon: Exploring Invented Languages is a welcome addition to the small but growing corpus of works on the subject of invented languages. The collection of essays was edited by Michael Adams, Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of English at Indiana University Bloomington and Vice-President of the Dictionary Society of North America. Not only does Adams serve as editor, he also writes complementary appendices to accompany each of the contributed essays to expand on a particular aspect or to introduce related material. Adams’ previous works include Slang: The People’s Poetry (Oxford University Press, 2009) and Slayer Slang: A Buffy the Vampire Slayer Lexicon (Oxford University Press, 2003). Although Oxford University Press is known for its scholarly publications, the title From Elvish to Klingon would suggest that the book is geared toward a popular audience. -

Schade, Ph.D. ii Abstract In my dissertation “Atomic Apocalypse – ‘Nuclear Fiction’ in German Literature and Culture,” I investigate the portrayal of the nuclear age and its most dreaded fantasy, the nuclear apocalypse, in German fictionalizations and cultural writings. My selection contains texts of disparate natures and provenance: about fifty plays, novels, audio plays, treatises, narratives, films from 1946 to 2009. I regard these texts as a genre of their own and attempt a description of the various elements that tie them together. The fascination with the end of the world that high and popular culture have developed after 9/11 partially originated from the tradition of nuclear fiction since 1945. The Cold War has produced strong and lasting apocalyptic images in German culture that reject the traditional biblical apocalypse and that draw up a new worldview. In particular, German nuclear fiction sees the atomic apocalypse as another step towards the technical facilitation of genocide, preceded by the Jewish Holocaust with its gas chambers and ovens. -
