The Parish of Rainton first published a plan in August 2003. It was reviewed in October 2008. The contents of this plan are formed around the Village survey carried out in February 2016. Detailed summaries with findings are to be found further on in this plan. The last five years have been relatively quiet in Rainton. The A1M motorway construction, the addition of a permanent bridge over that road, the opening of an enlarged recreation field all have been completed. However Rainton is not without its issues. The major preoccupation of its parishioners, in 2013 and 2008 was and still is, unchecked housing development. There is a strong desire amongst the population of Rainton for the village to retain its village attributes. As can be seen from the detailed results there is still a major problem with on road car parking at night. This has and will continue to present a challenge for everybody. 3 Utility services continue to be poor in Rainton. Foul water (Sewerage) disposal is well below what one would expect for the 21st century. The capacity of telephone landlines is at saturation. There has however been an improvement in High Speed Broadband to most, but not all, of the village. Currently we have no threats from major energy developers such as wind power and hydraulic “fracking”. We are not immune however as a major energy recovery plant is being built at Allerton that will burn household rubbish, which cannot be recovered/recycled and which would otherwise go to landfill.

    Robert Metcalfe (b. 1804, d. 1887) Elizabeth Barker Robert Metcalfe was baptised on 7 August 1804 in the parish of Topcliffe by Thirsk. The parish records show that his father was also named Robert Metcalfe, a labourer, and his mother was Rachael Clarke (1). The family home was in the village of Rainton, in the township of Rainton with Newby, which is close to the estate of Newby Park, owned by the Robinson family, the Lords Grantham, and later the Earls de Grey (2). Robert never actually married, but the Topcliffe by Thirsk parish records reveal that he nearly did marry in the year 1834. There is an entry in the register of an intended marriage between Robert Metcalfe and Jane Fenwick, whose family also lived in Rainton. However, the entry is crossed out, which suggests that the marriage did not take place (3). There is no trace of Robert in Rainton in the census of 1841. However, the 1851 census for Rainton shows that Robert was living there, and that he describes himself as unmarried, aged 46, and gives his occupation as a master gardener (4). It is possible that by then he may have been working at Newby Park, as the entrance to the park and mansion house is only about half a mile away from the village. The OS map for 1853 shows that a road runs eastwards from the village to a crossroads, and the entrance to the park is at this point. There is a lodge, and behind it is a large walled kitchen garden (5).

The village is a designated conservation area and the application site abuts the boundary but is not within it. To the north east of the application site is a working farm called ‘The Brooms’. The landscape around Baldersby St James is generally flat and used primarily for agriculture and a mixture of livestock grazing and crop production.
