Along with the tasty treats, the committee will also have a test of sailing skills. As the racers approach the boat, they will be challenged to do a 720 degree spin around one of several inflatable marks. After this test, the boats will approach the Committee boat where the officials will deposit watermelon into the watery abyss. Each boat will be required to perform a MOB Rescue Drill on said fruit, and return to the marina. The winner will be determined by the crews that can complete the tasks and get their melons back to the committee table… We will have staggered starts if we have different classes of boats. Special consideration (aka… a head start) will given to the crews with the best pirate costumes.

July Students Enjoy Good Breezes Fourteen students of Basic Sailing Class #2 of the 2018 season enjoyed lots of sunshine and fair breezes the entire weekend of July 21-23. Nearly all students sailed soloed by Sunday afternoon! When all the Sunfish had been lashed down on the beach at the end of class on Saturday, the class drifted over to the slips to partake in the hospitality of NSA sailors at the Open Boat event. After a long day of practicing new sailing skills, class members really appreciated the great food and drink offered by many boat owners and their crews. And they really jumped at the chance to see all the boats which were open for their close inspection and the opportunity to talk with the skippers. Thank you to all the boating families who made this event happen and generously shared your time with our new sailors!

The excitement and enthusiasm students experienced in class and at the Open Boat certainly manifested itself by the end of weekend. Four of our students/families took the next step in their sailing adventure by purchasing boats! Two of our families purchased 3 Sunfish, one student bought a Zuma, and another family acquired an O’Day 17 DaySailer. Also, from our first two classes, four of our families have said they are pursuing membership in the NSA!

Our Adult Learn-to-Sail Program continues this Saturday, August 11, with the one-day Basic Keelboat class, open to experienced sailors and new sailors who have completed the NSA Basic Sailing class. 17 sailors have enrolled in the class, including 4 current NSA members. And 16 of the participants are graduates of the Basic Sailing course.

The last event on the LTS calendar this summer is the Basic Sailing Class #3. Eight students round out that class and will sail on the weekend of August 25-26. I hope this class will have weather as nice as our last class and that it, too, will produce more excited sailors who are ready to continue their sailing journey. Lastly, I would like to thank the 10 volunteer NSA sailing instructors who have worked so hard to make our Learn- to-Sail Program successful again this year, and who have repeatedly adjusted their personal schedules to accommodate the changing needs of our program. Thanks, Guys!

The Boatswain’s Locker

Don’t Give Up The Boatswain’s Lockerthe Ship!

Today I offer the next installment in my “on-again, off-again” series of nautical expressions which have found their way into our everyday language. The historical account below provides the background for a phrase which perhaps continues to offer us hope and encouragement, even in today’s troubled times.

In June of 1813, Captain James Lawrence, in command of the USS Chesapeake, engaged the British frigate HMS Shannon just outside Boston Harbor. After a short, bloody battle, the Chesapeake was seriously damaged and her captain lay mortally wounded. Reportedly, Lawrence died with his last command still on his lips: “Tell the men to fire faster . . . fight ‘til she sinks, boys . . . don’t give up the ship!” The Americans lost the battle and were compelled to surrender the Chesapeake, but Lawrence’s dying words lived on. Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, who is frequently and incorrectly credited with being the source of the phrase, had Lawrence’s words – “Don’t give up the ship” – stitched onto a battle flag that he flew during the decisive Battle of Lake Erie in September 1813. Having to transfer from his badly damaged flagship at the height of the battle, he carried this flag with him. Aboard the U.S. brig Niagara, a victorious Commodore Perry penned a dispatch to General William Henry Harrison, which was to become famous in its own right: “We have met the enemy and they are ours.” The venerable battle flag bearing Lawrence’s immortal words is on display at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Although the original phrase “Don’t give up the ship” used to be strictly nautical, the expression has crept into common English usage as an exhortation not to give up. Commodore Perry’s own famous words reporting his victory on Lake Erie achieved a life of their own, when paraphrased some years ago by Walt Kelly’s irrepressible cartoon character, Pogo, who said, “We have met the enemy and he is us!” Perhaps in our world today, we can find not only hope and encouragement, but insight as well, in both of these phrases. Whitecap Regatta 2018 The 2018 Whitecap regatta was a success. There were 21 boats entered, 6 San Juan 21s, 6 Hobie 16s, 4 Hobie 14Ts, 3 Snipes & 2 Sunfish. The competitors came from Colorado, Texas Oklahoma, Nebraska and of course Kansas. There was no racing on Saturday due to a lack of wind but everyone had a fun time socializing before and during happy hour and the evening dinner.

Sunday was a very welcome change for all as the wind held between 5 & 10 mph in a steady SSE direction. The PRO, Allen Archer and his helper Mark Simpson did a fantastic job setting a course for the multi hulls and mono hulls that was just right. It enabled the competitors to get 4 races in making it worth the trip for those who had come a long way

The starts were competitive with a general recall for one of the Hobie starts. Dan Jarrett was overall winner in the H16 fleet with 3 firsts and Evan & Mark Evans tied in the H14T fleet. Evan was awarded first overall because he won the last race. A fifth race would have been the tie breaker. The Snipes were aggressive camping out on the start line at the committee boat end trying to out wit one another but Eugene Soltero was the master and overall winner with 4 firsts. The San Juan 21 fleet enjoyed racing with 6 boats once again and the overall winner was Jay Sawyer with 3 firsts. Everyone enjoyed themselves and we hope the travelers return again next year.

8 • Ninnescah Sailing Association • August 2018 ninnescah.org Have you checked your boat LATELY?

As we are starting a new season, the Yardmaster wants to remind every one of a few things:

Club rules require that we check our boat and trailer at least every two weeks. If you are already mowing your yard at home, it’s a safe bet your yard space needs attention too.

We mow for fire hazard as well as appearance. Please do not use Roundup or other herbicides, as they will only kill the grass, create dry areas that will burn easily, and only the weeds will return. During the heavy growth times, for fire safety, it may be necessary to mow more than just once a month.

Yard spaces will be inspected on the first Sunday of the month. If the growth is heavy, thick or high enough to touch the frame of your trailer, it will be mowed for you and you will be billed.

Please take note: Extra reminder notices won’t be going out this year. Please be sure to keep air in your tires and your trailer unlocked for easy moving.

TAKE THE EASY WAY OUT! CURRENT FEES: AVOID WORRYING ABOUT MOWING! Mowing Maintenance Fee $157.50 Mowing Yard Space Empty $46.00 Sign up to have contract Mowing Yard Space Full $65.00 maintenance mowing for Mowing Yard Space Immobile $105.00 your space for only $157.50 per year!

Contact Dale Gronniger by emailing [email protected] or call 316-371-7891.

Please consider the following: • Mowers are provided in the sheds in each yard. Please check the oil in the mower before using. • Be sure to move your trailer to mow and bring your weed eater from home. • Keep your space clear of junk and debris that will damage the mowers. • The only tie downs allowed are those that are set in concrete. The twist in doggie style are mower killers, and do not hold in our Kansas storms. Please report any missing tie downs. • The yard spaces are for boats and trailers only.
