Many people were involved in the project. From Cornwall County Council were Peter Lugg (PT&E Area Supervisor, Penzance), Adrian Drake (PT&E, Maintenance Consultancy, Area Surveyor), Veryan Heal (Historic Environment Advice Manager), as well as Dick Cole, the archaeologist with the HES who monitored the final restoration of the cross. Tony and Ann Jenkin of Trewern rescued the cross fragments and provided the pieces with a temporary home. The actual repair was carried out by Adrian Thomas and David Cutting, with Geoff Hoad’s digger. Access over adjoining land was with the help of W illiam John Thomas. W ithin the Historic Environment Service, the Project Manager was Ann Preston-Jones. The work was undertaken as part of the Scheduled Monument Management Team’s ‘Conserving Cornwall’s Past’ project: a project funded jointly by English Heritage, the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Cornwall Heritage Trust, Cornwall County Council and other partners.

H. RYVES, H. M. QUICK and J. E. BECKERLEGGE (kindly assisted by R. H. BLAIR and A. G. PARSONS) Forty-five members joined the Society in 1956. We regret the loss by death of six members, nine have resigned, and 43 have had their names removed from the list for the reason of non-payment of subscriptions. This makes a total of 589 ordinary members. The twenty-fifth Annual General Meeting was held in the Museum, Truro, on April 19th, when Mr. Hurrell showed his films of the Dipper and other birds. The Autumn meeting was held on November 3rd. Mr. Palmer spoke on migration, and Rev. J. E. Beckerlegge on recording. One Executive Committee meeting was held during the year. Excluding listed places of worship, for which the survey is still incomplete,1,150 assets have been removed for positive reasons since the Register was launched in 2008.The sites that remain at risk tend to be the more intractable ones where solutions are taking longer to implement. While the overall number of buildings at risk has fallen, the average conservation deficit for each property has increased from £260k (1999) to £370k (2012).We are also seeing a steady increase in the proportion of buildings that are capable of beneficial re-use – those that have become redundant not because of any fundamental lack of potential, but simply as the temporary victims of the current economic climate. The South West headlines for 2012 reveal a mixed picture. We will continue to fund Monument Management It is good news that 8 buildings at risk have been removed Schemes which, with match-funding from local authorities, from the Register; less good that another 15 have had to offer a cost-effective, locally led approach to tackling be added.

  • St Just-In-Penwith Area Guide
    Situated just beside the North Road at the Pendeen end, Wheal Hearle comprises two engine houses which were home to a ten inch winding engine and a thirty inch pumping engine. It was in production from about 1855 and, at its peak, employed just over one hundred men , women and boys. The mine appears to have been short lived with little reported after 1865.
