In 2010 he retired from the military after 37 years of service and assumed the position of director of the CIA. Paula Broadwell was a fellow West Point graduate, Harvard graduate and had served the U.S. Army for 15 years. The pair met in 2006 when Petraeus addressed Broadwell’s class at Harvard. Later, she approached him about composing a book based on his wartime leadership. He agreed and by 2010 he had granted her free access, including lodging at his base in Kabul when he took control of Afghanistan. The investigation started when harassment allegations had been made against Broadwell. Broadwell was suspected of sending emails to Jill Kelley, a family friend of Petraeus, accusing her of engaging in an inappropriate relationship with him. The investigation began with a warrant to search through Broadwell’s emails. There the FBI found details of Petraeus and Broadwell’s affair. Both Petraeus and Broadwell were interviewed separately by the FBI in October and admitted to the affair. Both Petraeus and Broadwell were married at the time of the affair.

Whereas once these stories of scandal were limited to entertainment media, their presence in the news environment has been growing in recent years, leading to what Williams and Carpini (2004) refer to as the erosion of the distinction between news and entertainment. This “erosion” includes an increase in entertainment stories (i.e., celebrities’ private lives) in the more traditional news media, as well as news media covering entertainment­style stories of public and political figures (i.e., infidelities) instead of only stories about their professional lives. What was once only speculated to happen in public office (i.e., the John F. Kennedy/Marilyn Monroe affair), now becomes front page news: Senator John Edward’s affair and “love child” with Reille Hunter; New York Governor Eliot Spitzer’s prostitution scandal; Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s affair with a city official. But perhaps the most memorable news coverage of a political sex scandal is former President Bill Clinton’s indiscretions with Monica Lewinsky. Coverage of the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal dominated the news for nearly one year, from first reports of the scandal to Clinton’s denial of the “relationship” with Lewinsky to his impeachment trial. Written by Eugene Robinson WASHINGTON — The one familiar aspect ofthe David Petraeus scandal is that he had an affair. Everything else about this story is weird. Petraeus, who resigned Friday as director ofthe CIA, is brilliant, brave, dedicated and accomplished. But he is also vain. Even his most loyal and ardent supporters have to acknowledge the care with which he has always burnished his own image. He is used to being surrounded by acolytes — staffofficers,journalists, hangers-on — whose fawning attentions can only foster a sense ofsuperiority and entitlement. Not every man in that situation betrays his marriage vows. Some do, as evidenced by the whole ofhuman history. Sothe sexpartis deplorable butcomprehensible. According to reports by The Washington Post and other news outlets, the FBI investigation that uncovered the relationship between the retired four-star general and PaulaBroadwell, his two-decades-younger biographer, was launched earlyin the summer. Yet Petraeus' boss, Director ofNational Intelligence James Clapper, wasn't told ofthe inquiry imtil Nov. 6. Whichjust happened to be Election Day. Sorry, but there are no comcidences in spy novels. It is inconceivable that FBI agents would skulk around investigating the private life ofthe CIA director without informing top officials ofthe bureau and the Justice Department. It was obvious that as soon as Clapper knew, he would have to inform President Obama — and that Clapper would have to make some recommendation about Petraeus' future. So who the hell is she? South Korean honorary consul? Huh? Even if she is just an ambitious dope (or in another jargon, unwitting asset of someone or some power), the scene is squalid. This is the center of the war on terror? Or is it the set of the next season of Homeland? My advice to you?
