The Oklahoma Historical Society approved my application to place a historical marker at the site near Willow that housed an Atlas F Intercontinental Ballistic Missile from 1962 to 1965. One of 12 missile sites attached to the 577th Strategic Missile Squadron at Altus Air Force Base, the Willow missile site was part of the American Cold War nuclear arsenal. All 12 missiles were put on alert for the first time during the October 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. In addition to securing permission from the OHS, I wrote the marker text, raised the money to pay for the marker, oversaw its installation, and spoke at the dedication ceremony.

I introduced Elk City High School History teacher Kevin Black as he was inducted into the Western Oklahoma Historical Society Hall of Fame at the organization’s annual banquet. Prior to his selection, I wrote a letter of recommendation for his nomination to the WOHS Hall of Fame.

Attended evening lecture presented by SWOSU President Dr. Randy Beutler and SWOSU History Professor Dr. Sunu Kodumthara regarding the massacre of Black Kettle’s camp along the Washita River in 1868. The Wedding, SWOSU-Sayre Literary Festival, October 2013

I wrote a one-act play, The Wedding, which was performed during the SWOSU-Sayre Literary Festival. The play centers around a wedding that is thrown on the cheap by a miserly father-of-the bride. An unusual cast of characters also includes an Elvis impersonator hired to perform the ceremony and provide the reception music, dim-witted hillbilly cousins of the groom, and a foreign-born funeral parlor beautician who was hired to do the bridesmaids’ hair and makeup.

I wrote a one-act play, The Painting, which was performed during the SWOSU-Sayre Literary Festival. The play features several off-beat characters, including an Oklahoma sheriff who is convinced a Russian garage sale attendee is a covert Communist bent on spreading Marxist-Leninist propaganda and fomenting revolution; hippies who reflect on the greed and corruption of the Reagan Era; and an American librarian and a French art critic who debate the merits of their respective cultures. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Las3OxyrT4

SWOSU-Sayre Literary Festival, Introducer/Attendee October 2014

I introduced Dr. Wade McCoy, author of historical fiction novel A Rainbow in the Dark, and the man on whose life the novel was based, Dr. Henry Kirkland, during a session of the SWOSU-Sayre Literary Festival. The men discussed the novel, and Dr. Kirkland specifically discussed growing up as an African-American in segregation-era Eastern Oklahoma.

I attended a presentation by Dr. Sheldon Russell, author of the historical fiction novel The Yard Dog. The novel is set near a Nazi prisoner-of-war camp in World War II-era Oklahoma.

Carnegie Library, Elk City, OK Fall 2005

I delivered a lecture titled “Uncle Tom’s Cabin: A Historical Perspective” to a meeting of Friends of the Library at Elk City’s Carnegie Library. The lecture placed the novel in historical context as I gave a brief overview of slavery from the post-Revolutionary era until the novel was published in the middle 19th century.

“A Good Life” 2013

A feature story I wrote chronicling the life of Canute resident Christene Smith, from her birth in pre-Dust Bowl Oklahoma and life growing up in 1930s and 1940s Western Oklahoma, to her subsequent marriage and life as an Army wife living abroad, to her career in Western Oklahoma law enforcement. Published in the Daily Elk Citian and Cordell Beacon.

“Madame Director” 2013

A feature story I wrote about SWOSU graduate Belinda Graham after she became Executive Director of the Sayre Chamber of Commerce. Published in the Elk City Daily News and Sayre Record.

“The Hands-On Approach” 2014

A feature story I wrote about SWOSU-Sayre graduate Landon Hise after he became the CEO of Cordell Memorial Hospital, which made him the state’s youngest hospital administrator at the time. Published in the Cordell Beacon, Elk City Daily News, Sayre Record and Cheyenne Star.

“Making the Grade” 2014

A feature story I wrote about three area teenagers—Bryce Butcher, Daniel Thompson and Myriah Wright—who made the transition from homeschool to college at SWOSU-Sayre. Published in the Elk City Daily News.

“An Impressive Man” 2014

A feature story I wrote chronicling the life of Elk City resident Eldon Hendrix. Hendrix shared stories of growing up in Erick with future country music legend Roger Miller, playing in a band with Miller, transitioning from farming to maintenance work in adulthood, and life as a retiree. Published in the Elk City Daily News.

“A Quiet Man” 2014

A feature story I wrote chronicling the life of Elk City Commissioner and Mayor Dan Gambill. Gambill was born in the late 1960s, and the story covers his youth in Western Oklahoma, his college years, and his decision to run for office after spending time as a civilian contractor assisting the U.S. military in Iraq. “A Tale of Two Careers” 2014

A feature story I wrote chronicling the life and careers of Western Oklahoma firefighter- turned-educator Danny Britton. Published in the Elk City Daily News.

“Partners” 2014

A feature story I wrote chronicling the lives of Western Oklahomans George and Earlene Holley, from their 1940 marriage in Carter through years of farming, followed by ownership of multiple Elk City businesses from the early 1960s through the early 1990s. Published in the Elk City Daily News.

“A feature story I wrote chronicling the journey of Sayre’s Sherron Manning from undecided college undergraduate to college dean. Published in the Elk City Daily News and the Sayre Record.

Drawing on my Political Science background and my communications background, I was Communications Coordinator for Elk City Mayor Dan Gambill in his Oklahoma Senate primary election campaign against Darcy Jech. Though my participation was kept from the public eye, I wrote public remarks, press releases and campaign literature text for the candidate, and I also advised Mayor Gambill on issues as I helped him craft his campaign narrative.
