RACING AHEAD HARNESS - July 1 Rosie's Ideal Image courtesy of Gloucester Park/Scott Hamilton Media Article by Tim Walker CRAIG LYNN Craig Lynn is a man that has quietly achieved in the sport of Harness Racing. He has a lot more he wants to achieve, and he isn’t planning on letting anything stand in his way of reaching the goals he has set for himself. As an owner, Lynn has featured on Harness Racing’s night of nights, with star mare The Parade taking out the Group 1 Mares Classic on Inter Dominion Grand Final night in 2016. But perhaps Lynn’s two biggest chances to stamp himself as one of the more prominent names in Harness Racing have come on one of Western Australia’s premier winter nights of racing at Gloucester Park, the Westbred Finals night. In 2017, he won the Westbred Two-Year-Old Colts and Geldings Classic with Highroller Joe, while Rosies Ideal finished third in the fillies edition. Finishing with a Group 1 winner and third placegetter was a big thrill for Lynn, and, arguably, his best night at Gloucester Park. Little did he know he would be able to top that achievement one year on. With the pair a year older and more experienced, they went just as well in the three-year-old editions of the lucrative Westbred races. Highroller Joe finished an admirable second to One Off Delight, before Rosies Ideal upstaged a high quality group of fillies in their edition of the Group 1 event. Having bred both Rosies Ideal and Highroller Joe, both nights were special for Lynn, but he said 2018 just eclipsed 2017, with both horses finishing top two. “Breeding both of them makes nights like that special,” he said. “I’ve bred a fair few horses, and had a bit of luck with it along the way. “I’ve had some good nights at the track, but to have a night like that this year, it’s definitely up there. “I’m pretty lucky to have two years in a row like this with horses you breed.” From an early age, Lynn was prepared to make significant sacrifices to achieve his goals. After spending his early childhood in Busselton, Lynn made the move to Perth to further his development as a Hockey player. RACING AHEAD HARNESS - July 3 Craig Lynn “I moved to Perth when I was 13 and I trained every day when I was a kid,” he said. Highroller Joe “My parents stayed at home but my brother lived in Perth at the time. “I went to a good Hockey school, Como Secondary College, and it was all about Hockey in Phys Ed and I made a few in roads there. “I played Junior World Cup for Australia, and attended the Australian Institute of Sport, and the West Australian Institute of Sport until I was 22.” After pursuing a Hockey career, Lynn was forced to return to Busselton for work and financial reasons. Between attending school and playing Hockey, another passion of Lynn’s was bubbling away, Harness Racing. Image courtesy of Gloucester Park/Scott Hamilton Media Standing next to the parade ring at Gloucester Park on a Friday night, Lynn’s passion and love for the sport was evident, and he explained how it all started with a few quiet bets. breeding…the incentive scheme is pretty big. “Betting was the first thing that came up, when I was young I “I’ve been to a few places to scout around and have a look at used to love a punt,” he said. different horses. “I love coming to the trots on a Friday night. “It’s a great feeling to breed one from day dot and watching them go right through.” “I haven’t ever trained horses, but I’ve always been spending time with them.” Lynn’s success with horses he has bred over the past 12 months has him wanting to take the next step. Family involvement in the sport has also been a big factor in Lynn wanting to get involved in the sport. He now has eyes on starting a training career. Lynn’s uncles Barry and Jamie Howlett are both small but Having spent time with his uncles and Prentice, Lynn now successful trainers in the south-west of WA. feels like he has a solid support base and knowledge to branch out by himself. Barry in particular has shot to prominence over the past 12 months, with the addition of boom three-year-old Jack Mac “I do want to train eventually,” he said. to his stable. “It’s something I have been wanting to do for a very long time. Highroller Joe is the pin-up boy for Jamie’s stable. “A few doors have opened up with Highroller Joe and him Prior to the Westbred Three-Year-Old Classic night, Jamie said moving to Jamie’s, which is just down the road for me. Lynn was a regular around his stable, learning everything he “I’ve been around horses for a long time, but I haven’t taken could about the caper. that next step to try and train. Lynn said his Hockey background could be an explanation “That is the goal. for why he wanted to have a greater involvement in Harness Racing. “I spent a lot of time with Justin, Barry and Jamie, and even had horses with Jarryd Humphries, then obviously Shane “I enjoy the people you meet in Harness Racing, and Young and Dave Thompson too.” competitiveness they have,” he said. Finding the time to train horses has been the challenge for “Given I was a sportsperson in the old days, I like that Lynn, who runs a tree lopping business in Busselton, and competitiveness and the excitement of it, as well as the hard is often required to work for high profile companies like work that goes into it.” Western Power.
