  • See It Big! Action Features More Than 30 Action Movie Favorites on the Big
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ‘SEE IT BIG! ACTION’ FEATURES MORE THAN 30 ACTION MOVIE FAVORITES ON THE BIG SCREEN April 19–July 7, 2019 Astoria, New York, April 16, 2019—Museum of the Moving Image presents See It Big! Action, a major screening series featuring more than 30 action films, from April 19 through July 7, 2019. Programmed by Curator of Film Eric Hynes and Reverse Shot editors Jeff Reichert and Michael Koresky, the series opens with cinematic swashbucklers and continues with movies from around the world featuring white- knuckle chase sequences and thrilling stuntwork. It highlights work from some of the form's greatest practitioners, including John Woo, Michael Mann, Steven Spielberg, Akira Kurosawa, Kathryn Bigelow, Jackie Chan, and much more. As the curators note, “In a sense, all movies are ’action’ movies; cinema is movement and light, after all. Since nearly the very beginning, spectacle and stunt work have been essential parts of the form. There is nothing quite like watching physical feats, pulse-pounding drama, and epic confrontations on a large screen alongside other astonished moviegoers. See It Big! Action offers up some of our favorites of the genre.” In all, 32 films will be shown, many of them in 35mm prints. Among the highlights are two classic Technicolor swashbucklers, Michael Curtiz’s The Adventures of Robin Hood and Jacques Tourneur’s Anne of the Indies (April 20); Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai (April 21); back-to-back screenings of Mad Max: Fury Road and Aliens on Mother’s Day (May 12); all six Mission: Impossible films

The Matrix as an Introduction to Mathematics Abstract In my classes on the nature of scientific thought, I have often used the movie The Matrix (1999) to illustrate how evidence shapes the reality we perceive (or think we perceive). As a mathematician and self-confessed science fiction fan, I usually field questionselated r to the movie whenever the subject of linear algebra arises, since this field is the study of matrices and their properties. So it is natural to ask, why does the movie title reference a mathematical object? Of course, there are many possible explanations for this, each of which probably contributed a little to the naming decision.

Carroll Date Professor of History Dr. Samuel Regalado Date Professor of History Dr. Marcy Rose Chvasta Date Professor of Communications © 2014 Kathleen Boone Chapman ALL RIGHTS RESERVED DEDICATION I am dedicating this work to my three dear friends: Ronda James, Candace Paulson, and Michele Sniegoski. Ronda’s encouragement and obedience to the Lord gave me what I needed to go back to school with significant health issues and so late in life. Candace, who graduated from Stanford “back in the olden days,” to quote our kids, inspired me to follow my dream and become all God wants me to be. Michele’s long struggle with terminal kidney disease motivated me to keep living in spite of my own health issues. We have laughed and cried together over many years, but all of you have given me strength to carry on. Sorry two of you made it to heaven before I could get this finished. I also want to give credit to my husband of forty years who has been a faithful breadwinner, proof-reader, and a paragon of patience. What more could any woman ask for? He has also put up with me yelling at my computer and cursing Bill Gates – A LOT.

  • 22Nd Anniversary of the MATRIX: Fans Highlight Interesting Information from This Trilogy
22nd Anniversary of THE MATRIX: fans highlight interesting information from this trilogy The successful Matrix trilogy will be available on HBO Max beginning on June 29thThe sci-fi trilogy, which premiered in 1999, describes a future in which the reality perceived by human beings is the matrix, a simulated reality created by machines in order to pacify the human population. Here is some of the information collected by fans that perhaps you did not know:The Bullet Time Effect was used for the first time in cinema. It is a filming technique that allows you to film specific action scenes in 360 degrees and play them back in slow-motion. Its premiere was so successful that at the time it became Warner Bros’ biggest hit to date (1999). It was the first film in the world to sell 1 million DVDs. Some of the actors that were considered for parts in the project were: Sandra Bullock, Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio Keanu Reeves decided to share his earnings with the entire team that took part in filming the movie, such as makeup, sound, lighting, etc. The recognizable code that appears on screens when the Matrix is encoded is a Japanese sushi recipe. The shooting scene in the lobby of the building where the Agents are holding Morpheus took 10 days to film. Ironically, the name Morpheus comes from Greek mythology and means God of sleep, which contradicts his role in the film. The movie was filmed in Australia although the names of the streets in the film come from Chicago.

Dick Advertisement Starring (the voices and animated images of) Keanu Reeves, LINKS Robert Downey, Jr., Woody Harrelson, Wynona Ryder, Rory Cochrane Links Portal Because many Americans may have to wait a few weeks before A Scanner Darkly breaks out of limited release and reaches a nearby E-mail Locus Online theatre, they should take advantage of the time to find and read the novel by Philip K. Dick before watching the film, which they will better appreciate if they are familiar with its source material. For the quick TOP phrases one might use to describe the film — "animated movie," "science fiction movie," even "Philip K. Dick movie" — all bring to mind certain expectations that this film simply does not fulfill: it offers few laughs, little in the way of spectacular effects or thrilling action sequences, and a relative paucity of mind-blowing ideas. However, if they already know Dick's story — a subdued, gut-wrenching portrait of the ravages of drug addiction in the 1970s, thinly disguised as near-future science fiction — audiences will be delighted to observe what is both an imaginative and a remarkable faithful adaptation of this neglected novel. The film's success is even more surprising because there were at least three good reasons to expect a dismal failure.

  • Keanu Reeves: People Don't Know What You
Queer Keanu: Race, Sexuality, and the Politics of Passing Why Can't Keanu Act?: Reading Race Back Into Reeves Celebrity trades in the rhetoric of exceptionalism. It celebrates the unique and the curious so even widely recognized people of color seem to transcend the language of race. However, the focus on the individual eccentricities of each celebrity obscures the many ways that their story only becomes legible through familiar narratives. Our perception and reception of famous people is structured through their adherance to or deviation from common stories and stereotypes about race, gender, and sexuality. Every star is still constructed within common social relations. Keanu Reeves' much publicized sexuality and equally obscured racial categorization may seem to be random aspects of the publicity surrounding his fame, but, in fact, they work together within socially constructed narratives of race and sexuality. The furor over Reeves' sexual orientation serves to obscure and suppress Reeves' racial background. On the other hand, Reeves race refuses to remain hidden and forgotten, surfacing through the language and rhetoric of ªqueer culture.º One of odder aspects of Reeves' public persona is the public's collective amnesia when it comes to his racial background. Reeves himself offers a racial geneology on his website, and almost all of his magazine profiles and interviews make some mention of his white mother and Hawaiian/Chinese father, usually in the context of explaining the meaning of his name. Despite these continual reiterations, Reeves is generally racially unmarked in both his film roles and in public perceptions (with crucial exceptions that will be discussed later).

FinalProject 25/08/2018, 930 PM COGS108 Final Project Group Members: Yanyi Wang Ziwen Zeng Lingfei Lu Yuhan Wang Yuqing Deng Introduction and Background Movie revenue is one of the most important measure of good and bad movies. Revenue is also the most important and intuitionistic feedback to producers, directors and actors. Therefore it is worth for us to put effort on analyzing what factors correlate to revenue, so that producers, directors and actors know how to get higher revenue on next movie by focusing on most correlated factors. Our project focuses on anaylzing all kinds of factors that correlated to revenue, for example, genres, elements in the movie, popularity, release month, runtime, vote average, vote count on website and cast etc. After analysis, we can clearly know what are the crucial factors to a movie's revenue and our analysis can be used as a guide for people shooting movies who want to earn higher renveue for their next movie. They can focus on those most correlated factors, for example, shooting specific genre and hire some actors who have higher average revenue. Reasrch Question: Various factors blend together to create a high revenue for movie, but what are the most important aspect contribute to higher revenue? • Scanner Darkly 22X5
FREE PREVIEW SCREENINGS OF A SCANNER DARKLY ON SUNDAY 13 AUGUST America’s endless and futile war on drugs has become one and the same with its war on terror. Reluctant undercover cop Bob Arctor (Keanu Reeves) follows orders to start spying on his friends, Jim Barris (Robert Downey Jr.), Ernie Luckman (Woody Harrelson), Donna Hawthorne (Winona Ryder) and Charles Freck (Rory Cochrane). When he is directed to step up the surveillance on himself, he is launched on a paranoid journey into the absurd, where identities and loyalties are impossible to decode. Based on legendary science-fiction author Philip K. Dick’s own experiences, “A Scanner Darkly” tells the darkly comedic, caustic, but deeply tragic tale of drug use in the modern world. The film plays like a graphic novel come to life with live-action photography overlaid with an advanced animation process—a method known as interpolated rotoscoping, first employed in writer/director Richard Linklater’s 2001 film "Waking Life" — to create a haunting version of America, seven years from now. The screenings will take place on Sunday 13th August, 10:30 for 11am start: Greenwich Picturehouse / Greenwich High Street, Phoenix Picturehouse / 57 Walton Street, Oxford Greenwich London Ritzy / Coldharbour Lane, Brixton Cameo / Home Street, Edinburgh Harbour Lights Picturehouse / Ocean Village, Arts Picturehouse / St Andrews Street, Cambridge Southampton.
