Los Angeles Dodgers Bullpen falters again as Dodgers' losing streak reaches five games By Steve Dilbeck Everything is a struggle for the Dodgers right now. Even when they get another outstanding effort from Clayton Kershaw and an assist in the scoring department from the opposing pitcher. That’s how a team rolls up a season-high, five-game losing streak. How it’s left with heads bowed and plenty of questions for a first-place team. The Dodgers took a 2-1 lead into the bottom off the ninth and still could not get it done Sunday, Kenley Jansen blowing a for only the second time this season. Get news and notes on all the Dodgers matchups >> Into the 10th it went, when Chris Hatcher gave up a walk-off solo homer to Jason Castro to complete Houston’s 3-2 comeback win at Minute Maid Park. On the day, the Dodgers went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Both of their runs were aided by Houston right-hander Lance McCullers, who threw three wild pitches. Initially it seemed enough for Kershaw, though ultimately the Dodgers would waste another strong outing by the left-hander. He held the Astros to one run on seven hits in his eight innings. He struck out 10 and did not walk a batter, the fifth time this season he’s managed that feat. But with Kershaw having thrown 111 pitches, the Dodgers turned the game over to Jansen in the ninth. He had not pitched in a week. Jansen gave up a lead-off to Carlos Correa. He struck out Luis Valbuena, but Correa then stole second base. After Jansen got Evan Gattis to pop up, Marwin Gonzalez blooped a hit to right and the Astros had tied the score, 2-2. Hatcher, who had been throwing well since coming off the disabled list last week, took over in the 10th. With one out, Castro drove his 11th over the left- field wall. The Dodgers challenged the homer, hoping a fan reaching over had interfered with the ball but home run was upheld upon review. The Astros, who lead the majors in homers, had swept the three-game series. Chase Utley gave Kershaw the early lead when he doubled with one out in the first . He took third on a McCullers’ first wild pitch, which proved significant when he scored on a sacrifice fly by Justin Turner. The score remained 1-0 until the fifth inning, when A.J. Ellis hit his own one-out double. One out later, with Jimmy Rollins at the plate, McCullers threw a wild pitch to advance Ellis to third and another that allowed him to score. Houston got one run back in the sixth when Jose Altuve – who had three of the Astros’ seven hits off Kershaw – doubled with one out. Carlos Gomez singled to left to move him to third, and he scored on base hit by Correa. Gomez tagged and took third on Jed Lowrie’s fly to right, and then came up with the most curious play of the day. Probably knowing how difficult it is to score off Kershaw, Gomez tried to steal home on a pitch to Gattis. Not the best idea against a left-handed pitcher, but Gomez made it very close. He slid head-first and nearly got a hand on the plate before being tagged out by Ellis. The Astros challenged the call, but it was upheld. Gomez also accidentally kicked Ellis in the side of the head on his slide. He remained down for a while but remained in the game. In the seventh, Gattis led off Houston’s half of the inning with a double. Kershaw then struck out the side. The Dodgers seemed on their way to snapping their losing streak, but more struggle lay ahead. LA Times LOADED: 08.24.2015

Los Angeles Dodgers Joc Pederson on bench again for Dodgers' series finale in Houston By Dylan Hernandez contact the reporter Joc Pederson, who started for the in the All-Star game, is no longer the Dodgers’ starting center fielder. The Dodgers are facing a right-handed pitcher Sunday in Lance McCullers of the Houston Astros, but Manager Don Mattingly nonetheless elected to start the right- handed-hitting Enrique Hernandez instead of the left-handed-hitting Pederson in center field. Get news and notes on all the Dodgers matchups >> “I think he gives us a better chance to win,” Mattingly said of Hernandez, who is batting .344 with an on-base percentage of .412 since the All-Star break. Pederson is batting .163 with a .333 on-base percentage over the same period. Pederson has continued to strike out at an alarmingly high rate -- he has 142 in 483 plate appearances this season -- but Mattingly said the slumping rookie has done everything in his power to evolve as a hitter. 966501 Los Angeles Dodgers Clayton Kershaw says Dodgers need to panic after fifth straight loss By Dylan Hernandez contact the reporter At the various low points of the Dodgers' season, the team's veteran players have often called for patience. Clayton Kershaw wanted to see something else Sunday. With the Dodgers swept by the Houston Astros in a three-game series and extending their losing streak to a season-long five games, Kershaw implored for a shift in the team's mentality. "I hope we're panicking a little bit," he said. "I think panic's a good thing, to a certain extent." Get news and notes on all the Dodgers matchups >> Kershaw limited the Astros to one run over eight innings, but the Dodgers dropped a 3-2 decision, as Kenley Jansen blew a save in the ninth and Chris Hatcher served up a walk-off home run to Jason Castro in the 10th. With 39 games remaining in the regular season, the Dodgers' lead over the second-place was down to one game. The Giants were scheduled to complete a three-game series in Pittsburgh that night. "There need to be a sense of urgency, maybe that's better to say than panic," Kershaw said. "I feel like we have to start playing like that. Not to say we haven't, but it's definitely time to start thinking that way." Kershaw lowered his earned-run average to 2.29, but the Dodgers are only 13-12 when he starts. The previous night, the Dodgers lost a game started by Zack Greinke. "The way that we're lined up right now, when you have two of the best pitchers in baseball, you've got to take advantage when they're on the mound," catcher A.J. Ellis said. "They both threw amazing in this series. They gave us more than enough of an opportunity to win games, and we didn't take advantage of it." The Dodgers will resume play Tuesday, when they open a three-game series against the at Great American Ball Park. The series will conclude an eight-game, three-city trip that started with a two-game set against the . "The pennant race is on," Ellis said. "This is the time of year you've got to step up." No-hit by Mike Fiers in their series opener against the Astros and limited to one run Saturday, the Dodgers are slumping offensively. The game Sunday started better than the previous two, as the Dodgers scored in the first inning. Chase Utley doubled off Astros starter Lance McCullers, advanced to third base on a wild pitch and went home on a sacrifice fly by Justin Turner. The Dodgers doubled their lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning, when Ellis doubled and scored after McCullers uncorked a couple more wild pitches. The Astros started to edge their way back into the game in the sixth inning, when Jose Altuve doubled to right field. "I thought I threw a really good two-strike fastball down and away," Kershaw said. "Really impressive at-bat for him." Carlos Gomez singled to left field to move Altuve to third, after which Carlos Correa singled on a comebacker that struck Kershaw on his foot. Altuve scored on the play, reducing the Astros' deficit to 2-1. "It was like a changeup, almost," Kershaw said. "I kind of reacted too fast and my foot got in the way of my glove. That's a double-play ball right there. That would have stopped the damage." Jed Lowrie flied out to right field, allowing Gomez to tag up, reach third base and set the stage for the most unusual play of the game. With Evan Gattis at the plate and Kershaw directing his attention to Correa at first base, Gomez tried to steal home. First baseman Adrian Gonzalez and third baseman Turner alerted Kershaw to what was happening, allowing him to throw out Gomez at the plate. "I know you have time," Kershaw said. "It's only 60 feet. He has 90 to go. Felt pretty confident we could get him out there." Still, the play was close enough that the Astros asked for the play to be reviewed under baseball's replay system. Ellis was knocked down on the play, as the headfirst-sliding Gomez kicked him in the head as he went by him. Ellis stayed in the game. Kershaw pitched two more innings, departing from the game with seven hits and no walks charged to him. Watching the game end in defeat, Kershaw conceded, was "disheartening." But, he said, "Just keep grinding. That's the way this game goes. We have to keep playing. You can't quit now." Up next Left-hander Alex Wood (8-8, 3.79 ERA) will face left-hander John Lamb (0-1, 6.35) and the Reds on Tuesday at 4 p.m. PDT at Great American Ball Park. TV: SportsNet LA; Radio: 570, 1020. 966502 Los Angeles Dodgers Castro's 10th-inning home run helps Astros hand the Dodgers their fifth consecutive loss Aug. 23, 2015 Updated 6:10 p.m. BY PEDRO MOURA / STAFF WRITER HOUSTON – The man had done everything he could, pitching out of precarious situations to allow a lone run in eight innings against the Astros. Behind Clayton Kershaw, the Dodgers’ offense produced nine hits and two runs, and the team carried a lead into the ninth. He was not panicked. Then, Kenley Jansen allowed a single to Carlos Correa, a stolen base, and another single, and the game was tied. “Two (expletive) hits,” Jansen said. “What can I do?” Fifteen minutes later, it was over, when Jason Castro lofted a fly ball to Minute Maid Park’s short left-field porch just deep enough for a walk-off home run off Chris Hatcher. Houston won, 3-2, in 10 innings, as the Dodgers became the owners of their first five-game losing streak in more than two years, and the clubhouse became the source of far more desperate talk and panic than at any point previous. “I hope we’re panicking a little bit. I think panic’s a good thing, to a certain extent,” Kershaw said. “It’s August whatever-it-is and we have five weeks and whatever it is, too. There needs to be a sense of urgency — maybe that’s better to say than panic. “I feel like we have to start playing like that.” The Dodgers received back-to-back dominant displays of pitching performances from Kershaw and Zack Greinke the night prior, and they wasted both. This season, they have lost 12 of Kershaw’s 25 starts, after losing four of 27 last year. Kershaw sensed the importance of every run. Up one in Sunday’s seventh inning, he gave up a leadoff double to the free-swinging Evan Gattis, then fell behind 3-0 to the next two batters, struck them out with sweeping sliders, and struck out the last batter of the inning, too. Including the 10th, the Dodgers (67-56) notched 10 hits, as many as the Astros. But they've scored just five runs in their past four games, including Friday’s no-hitter. Kershaw allowed one run on seven hits. He threw 111 pitches, at one point 18 straight strikes. For the second straight day, Jose Altuve was the Astro who provided most of the trouble. Saturday, he notched a homer and a triple against Greinke, and, Sunday, a double and two singles against Kershaw. Houston’s lone run came across in the sixth. Altuve doubled and Carlos Gomez singled. Correa grounded a ball up the middle — off Kershaw’s left foot, to a place third baseman Justin Turner could not reach. “I’ve got to make that play,” Kershaw said. “I kind of reacted too fast and my foot got in the way of my glove. That’s a double-play ball right there. That would have stopped the damage.” The damage was as such: Altuve scored and Gomez moved to second, then third on a flyout. With Gattis batting, Gomez then attempted a straight steal of home. He might’ve had it had he taken off a bit before, but as it was, Kershaw threw him out, a call confirmed after replay. During his attempt, Gomez also kicked catcher A.J. Ellis in the head. Trainers visited him on the field and conducted concussion tests on him on the bench, but Ellis stayed in the game for the duration. “It’s no fun to lose, and it’s no fun to lose when you’ve got a lead at the end of the game and you see the finish line, and you’re not able to get the last outs you need,” Ellis said. “Especially on a day like today, when you get 26 of them, and you need one more to be out there shaking hands – something we haven’t done in a while.” The Dodgers last won the day Jansen’s son was born, Aug. 16. He will be at least 9 days old before they win again, with Monday’s off day preceding a three-game series in Cincinnati. Jansen went a week in between appearances, with no save chances and Manager Don Mattingly unwilling to use him elsewhere. Jansen said he wasn’t thinking about that on the mound; he said he was confident the Dodgers' bullpen would rebound over the season’s final weeks. But he was fighting the feeling of frustration. “You can’t beat yourself up about one-run leads,” he said. “You don’t have enough room for error, so you can’t beat yourself up, especially if you didn’t pitch for a week.” Orange County Register LOADED: 08.24.2015

Los Angeles Dodgers Hernandez replaces Pederson as Dodgers starting center fielder Aug. 23, 2015 Updated 5:50 p.m. BY PEDRO MOURA / STAFF WRITER HOUSTON – Don Mattingly said Sunday morning that Joc Pederson is no longer the Dodgers’ starting center fielder. That role will now go to Kiké Hernandez, a far- less-heralded prospect his same age. “I feel like he gives us a better chance to win,” Mattingly said. Sunday’s game marked the 96th time the Dodgers faced a right-handed pitcher this season. It was the first time Pederson did not start. Before the game, when the lineup was posted, Mattingly talked to him, “talked about everything,” as the manager put it. He said he was confident Pederson, 23, can handle the demotion. “We have no problem with Joc,” Mattingly said. “He’s not a guy that doesn’t care. He’s actually in the other direction. He probably cares too much. He probably lets it bother him too much. I have no doubt that Joc’s gonna be a great player. “At this moment, Kiké, we feel like, is a better alternative.” Mattingly said the two men are comparable defenders, said he believes Hernandez is an above-average defender, and took time to praise Pederson, conscious of the havoc this could cause his approach. “In my mind, Joc’s gonna be a big-leaguer for a long time, a really good player,” Mattingly said. “Does he have to keep working? Yes. Does he have to get better? Yes.” Pederson had already lost playing time against left-handed pitchers. Now, sitting out against many right-handers, the Dodgers hope he can correct flaws in his swing he got away with in the minor leagues. “I think it’s really hard to try to continue to make changes during the season, because you go back out there and the guy’s throwing 95 or 96,” Mattingly said. “You just get back to trying to survive. And even if he’s making them, sometimes they take time to mold into place. “Because they’ve gotta become natural. You have to work on them every day.” UTLEY’S BASERUNNING No one in baseball history has as many stolen bases as Chase Utley and as good of a success rate. The 36-year-old second baseman has stolen 142 of 160 in his career, and he’s known as a great baserunner. Sunday, he sped to second for a first-inning double, took third on a wild pitch and snuck home on a sacrifice fly. In three days with the Dodgers, teammates have come to appreciate his efforts on the basepaths. “That’s his reputation: he doesn’t take anything for granted,” Kershaw said. “The old cliché, plays the game the right way, but he really does. He sprints every groundball out, runs the bases really well, makes the plays defensively, backs up. I mean, everything. “Not to mention, I feel like he’s barreled up every ball he’s hit in the past three games. He’s hasn’t got a lot of hits, but he’s barreled up pretty much everything.” Indeed, Utley has hit 12 balls into play as a Dodger, and eight of them have been clocked at 95 mph or higher, according to MLB’s Statcast system. Balls hit at that speed generally fall in for hits at a high rate. NOTES Yasiel Puig was ejected from Sunday's game in the ninth for arguing plate umpire James Hoye’s called third strike. Puig first put his hands on his hips and then dropped his bat, at which point he was ejected. Mattingly called the decision a “little funny.” “I’m a little surprised they threw him there,” the manager said. “A lot of times they’ll point to the batter.” Mattingly said Hoye felt like Puig showed him up. … In AL ballparks this season, Dodgers designated hitters have reached base twice in 26 plate appearances, with 10 strikeouts. Carl Crawford, Sunday’s DH, struck out in all three of his plate appearances. Orange County Register LOADED: 08.24.2015

Los Angeles Dodgers Final: Astros 3, Dodgers 2 (10 innings) Aug. 23, 2015 Updated 5:28 p.m. By PEDRO MOURA / STAFF WRITER HOUSTON — The Dodgers bullpen blew another dominant effort from Clayton Kershaw Sunday at Minute Maid Park, sending the team reeling to its first five-game losing streak in more than two years. The Astros walked off on the Dodgers, 3-2, in 10 innings. Jason Castro lofted a fly ball to Houston’s short left-field porch off Chris Hatcher, and it went just far and high enough to leave the field of play. Up one run in Sunday’s seventh inning at Minute Maid Park, Clayton Kershaw gave up a leadoff double to the free-swinging Evan Gattis. To the next batter, Marwin Gonzalez, he threw three straight balls, followed by a free fastball, and then two perfectly-placed sliders Gonzalez could not touch. Chris Carter came up to bat and the pattern repeated. Kershaw missed three times, battled back to 3-2, and threw another nasty slider. Jake Marisnick followed; Kershaw struck him out too. It was, for a while, a dominating display of pitching permanence. Each time Kershaw appeared in a spate of trouble — and there were a few such instances — he rebounded. But closer Kenley Jansen could not do the same, giving up the tying run in the bottom of the ninth, and Hatcher couldn’t either. The Dodgers (67-56) notched 10 hits, as many as the Astros, but have scored just five runs in their last four games. Houston no-hit the Dodgers on Friday and swept them on the weekend. 966506 Los Angeles Dodgers Dodgers lose in dramatic fashion in 10 innings, completing Houston Astros’ sweep

By JP Hoornstra, Inland Valley Daily Bulletin Posted: 08/23/15, 2:50 PM PDT | Updated: 1 min ago HOUSTON >> The Houston Astros swept a three-game series from the Dodgers in dramatic fashion Sunday, as Jason Castro hit a home run off Chris Hatcher in the 10th inning to seal a 3-2 victory. Houston tied the game with a run in the ninth inning off Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen. Making his first appearance in seven days, the Dodgers’ closer allowed a leadoff single by Carlos Correa, who stole second base then scored on an RBI single by Marwin Gonzalez. Hatcher (1-5) faced two batters in the 10th inning. Castro’s home run barely cleared the yellow stripe atop the left-field fence. The initial home run call stood up after a brief video review. It was the first run Hatcher had allowed after six consecutive scoreless appearances. The Dodgers have lost five straight games for the first time since May 2013. Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw allowed seven hits and one run in eight innings before giving the ball to Jansen. He walked no batters and struck out eight. The Dodgers got a run in the first inning when Chase Utley doubled off the base of the left-field wall, went to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Justin Turner. Utley barely beat a strong throw home by Astros center fielder Carlos Gomez, who coincidentally began the season in Milwaukee under the tutelage of new Dodgers third base coach Ron Roenicke. A double by Ellis, followed by two wild pitches that allowed Ellis to move up a base, gave the Dodgers a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning. Kershaw did not allow a runner past second base until the sixth inning, when Jose Altuve hit a double to left field, fair by mere inches. Gomez followed with a single, sending Altuve to third. The next batter, Carlos Correa, hit a ground ball back to the mound that Kershaw attempted to glove with his backhand. The ball bounced off his leg and Altuve scored, bringing the Astros within 2-1 and sending Gomez to third base. When Gomez attempted a straight steal of home plate with two outs, it stunned the announced crowd of 28,665 at Minute Maid Park. The Dodgers’ catcher, Ellis, might have been surprised too, but he managed to get his glove on Gomez’s nose just in time, a call that was upheld by video review. LA Daily News LOADED: 08.24.2015

Los Angeles Dodgers Rare attempted steal of home plate didn’t surprise Dodgers By JP Hoornstra, Inland Valley Daily Bulletin Posted: 08/23/15, 8:06 PM PDT | Updated: 46 secs ago HOUSTON >> Steals of home plate are so rare, even Carlos Gomez hadn’t tried one in six years before Sunday. The speedy center fielder was caught stealing then, just as he was with two outs in the sixth inning at Minute Maid Park — the most dramatic play in the Dodgers’ 3-2 loss to the Houston Astros. A 2-minute, 10-second video review was needed to confirm that Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis indeed tagged Gomez on his face just before he reached home plate with a head-first slide. “J.T. (third baseman Justin Turner) did a great job yelling as soon as he took off,” Ellis said. “Clayton (Kershaw) did a great job not panicking, stepping off, and making a good play.” Ellis paid a price for hanging in to make the tag, as Gomez’s left foot clipped him in the catcher’s mask. Ellis was knocked to the ground and took his time getting up under the watchful eye of Dodgers medical director Stan Conte. Ellis was examined according to ’s concussion protocol before he was allowed to remain in the game. “I’ve realized, in my years of working with him, just to shut up and let him do his work,” Ellis said of Conte. “(A concussion) is a dangerous thing.” There had been six successful stolen base attempts at home plate prior to Sunday, and only eight all of last season. Considering the catcher receives the ball behind home plate on every pitch, it’s a wonder any player tries to steal home at all. The Dodgers have a plan in case anyone does. “A.J. and I have talked about that,” Kershaw said. “We know what to do there. If we can get (Gomez), we’re pretty confident we can get anyone on that.” The announced crowd of 28,665 seemed stunned by the play, but Dodgers third base coach Ron Roenicke was not. Roenicke managed Gomez in Milwaukee from 2011 until May of this year. “I think Carlos is always looking for something that he thinks he can help you get a run,” he said. “He’s going to run into some outs at times, but he’s going to create way more runs because he’s very aggressive. So it didn’t surprise me.” Yasmani Grandal has caught 23 of Zack Greinke’s 25 starts this season, including the last 15. He probably would’ve caught a 24th had he not missed a week in May because of a concussion. That momentum, Mattingly explained, essentially carried Grandal into Greinke’s last start on Saturday, despite the fact that Ellis usually starts against left-handed pitchers. “He’s caught Zack so many times that I didn’t really want to change it, honestly,” Mattingly said. Ellis caught Clayton Kershaw on Sunday with right-hander Lance McCullers on the mound for the Houston Astros. Grandal, a switch-hitter, went 0-for-2 with a walk Saturday against Astros left-hander Scott Kazmir. “I knew (Saturday) was that day that it probably could’ve been A.J. just as easily, then Yas today with the day game,” Mattingly said. “Because (with) Kersh it seems like it doesn’t matter. I’ve been able to go back and forth. But for some reason with Zack it’s almost fallen on Grandal every time. As good as he’s been pitching, I didn’t really want to mess with that. Zack’s good either way. (Saturday) was just one of those days.” It’s been fair to assume the Ellis/Grandal catching platoon would continue into the postseason if the Dodgers make it that far. But if Greinke continues on this path — he leads the major leagues in earned-run average and is a strong candidate to win the National League Cy Young Award — maybe that isn’t a fair assumption anymore. “I think I’d be willing to do it the other way” — having Ellis catch Greinke — “just this game, yesterday, I didn’t feel like was the right one,” Mattingly said. The pitching matchups for the Dodgers’ three-game series in Cincinnati: Alex Wood opposes left-hander John Lamb on Tuesday; Brett Anderson opposes left-hander David Holmberg on Wednesday; right-hander Anthony DeSclafani opposes Greinke on Thursday. … Astros third baseman Jed Lowrie left the game in the seventh inning due to a right thumb contusion. … Yasiel Puig’s steal of second base was his third stolen base in six attempts this season. … Puig became the fourth Dodgers player to be ejected from a game this season when he dropped his bat following a called third strike by home plate umpire James Hoye in the ninth inning. “Usually that’s more of an equipment violation,” Mattingly said. “A lot of times they’ll point to the batter. I’m a little surprised they threw him (out) there.” * * * Six players have been credited with stealing home this season: Player, team, date Russell Martin, Toronto, June 2 A.J.
