When you receive this magazine Christmas will only be six weeks POLGOOTH TIMES away. Some of us will have made our cake and puddings and brought Autumn 2007 101 presents, others will be thinking about it all and some of us will be somewhere in the middle but whatever stage we are at the countdown begins now.

I hope you are enjoying the ‘Getting To Know You’ item in the magazine. This quarter focuses on Tony Warren and over the coming year I will be featuring other regular contributors to The Polgooth Times which should make interesting reading.

Please call Frank and Hayley for more information I wrote my last editorial with the rain lashing the windows and a gale or come and see us on Trelowth Road blowing outside, and this was the summer edition. What a change in the weather! I am writing this during a long warm and dry spell which Telephone: 72763 has been appreciated by us all and has prepared us for another, hopefully not too cold, Cornish winter.

SHOP TALK POLGOOTH METHODIST CHURCH Since last writing, our new minister, Rev. John Kendall and his wife Sue have arrived STOP PRESS !!! - TRAVEL MONEY and officially took up office on 1st September. John and Sue live in Mevagissey but John has oversight of several churches as well as being Superintendent Minister of the Circuit. His first visit to us as a church was on 23rd September, when he led our Harvest All Age Worship. We had an enjoyable time and as a result of the harvest gifts, were able to distribute a large number of food parcels to the sick and elderly in the village. At harvest time, we have an opportunity to thank God for his goodness and faithfulness but it’s also an opportunity to remember all those in the world who do not have the same privileges as us. We pray for those who lack the very basics in life such as food, clean water and for many, even homes. We are thankful for all those who give sacrificially of money and time to help those people. Our children’s holiday club this year was shorter than normal. We met in Polgooth on Friday 10th August and at St Mewan Church on the following day. We concluded with a United Service at St Mewan Church on the Sunday morning. Only a small number of children attended but those who came along very much enjoyed the activities. During the last few weeks the village has lost two of its most well known residents. Bill GARTH HITCHENS Thomas was known by all having lived and run a business in the village for over Green Acres, Trelowth 50years. We shall miss him for his friendly greeting, his willingness to help anyone, St Austell PL26 2DX and for his sense of humour. Shortly after Bill passed away, Vera Treleaven died at Tel 01726 72790 Averlea where she had been so well cared for over the last 5 or 6 years. Vera was our church’s oldest member having been born in the village in January 1903. As a girl she Wood Turning, Joinery & remembered the tin mines operating in the village. We will all miss Bill and Vera but Property Maintenance are left with many happy memories of them both. Over the next few months we will be looking forward to our Remembrance Day Service on 11th November, a service on 18th November when a number of folk will be received into membership of the church and then, of course to our Christmas GET THE GARDENER celebrations advertised in the Village Diary. FOR ALL YOUR GARDENING SERVICES In church we frequently become aware of the ‘seasons’ of life. I have already & GENERAL MAINTENANCE WORK mentioned two deaths. Early in September, however, we had two enjoyable events FULLY INSURED and both were blessed with good weather. On 8th September we had the wedding of Kim Hitchens and Tim Bardle and the following day the infant baptism of William YOUR LOCAL MAN Childs, both of these were very much village events and cause for celebration. We continue to hold a fortnightly house group, which is principally a Bible Study, a TEL: - 07886 791392 GILES E T MCGUFFIE monthly coffee morning and of course, worship every Sunday at 10.30am. If you would like to join us at ‘any time’ you can be assured of a warm welcome. FOR A FREE QUOTATION LONDON APPRENTICE

I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to all in the village who helped in any way during Ecla’s illness. The carers who came in to nurse Ecla were so lovely to her, they treated her with respect, dignity and compassion. I owe them all a huge debt of gratitude. Without their help and dedication I would not have had Ecla home for so long. Also thank you so much for the care Ecla had at Averlea, when I needed some respite. I appreciate the large attendance at Ecla’s funeral, also for all the messages, cards, floral tributes and donations. Thank you also to Jeremy and Jo at the Polgooth Inn for the tea and service they provided. So to everyone in and around the village, a huge thank-you to you all.

Yours sincerely Bob

THE GUARDIAN ANGEL By Pauline Sweet

We have kept bantams, and somemes ducks for several years, you may have heard our cockerel, which sadly died last year. Although there are foxes on the hill, we have never had problems with them in regard to the chickens, maybe because their wings have not been pinioned. But we have lost ducks to the foxes. This year we were given two young ducks, and loved their delight in their pool and in the garden probing for slugs and snails. The six hens scratch for bugs too, our white hen will follow me around requesng me, in her own parcular way, to li flower pots and stones so she can find things. Each day I open the hen house door to collect eggs or to clean it out. The run door is at the other end which I open to let them out and shut them in later. One parcular day I rounded them all up from the garden and shut the door for the day. Hours later I was surprised to see the white hen 7 Holiday home 1 Assortment looking in from the window sill outside, she hadn’t done this before- 8 A down and out 2 Baby deer they were all shut up, or so I thought. 10 Eating alfresco 3 Nameplate on shop front I took her back to the run and checked the hen-house door - I had forgoen to shut it! Polgooth Village Hall

The last Village Hall meeting was held on Monday 10th September at 7.30 pm. Several matters were discussed. Our Bookings Secretary, Michele Taylor, said that she had had renewed bookings for the Saturday Yoga group. The Keep-Fit Group had started again after their summer break. The St Mewan Under-fives have taken up the afternoon bookings and seemed to be thriving in their new home. They now have a land-line telephone installed,

A new Henry vacuum cleaner has been purchased. A table-top sale was held on Saturday 29 th September. Thirteen people took tables at £5.00 a time. The advertisement for the event cost £15 so the net profit for the Hall was £50. The event was not very well attended by the public and so several people did not cover their outlay. The decision to hold a table-top sale instead of a jumble sale was made to cut down on the work in bringing jumble down and taking any left-overs to the re-cycling bins.

The next committee meeting will be the Annual General Meeting on Monday 12 th November at 7.30 pm. Anyone who is interested in joining this Committee will be most welcome. We hope to vote in a Chairman, Treasurer and Bookings Secretary.

Other Village Hall events are the Variety Players’ ‘Cabaret 5’ Thursday to Saturday October 18 th – 20 th , and Roger May showing th A BOOKSHOP IN A CORNISH some of his Father’s films at 7.30 on Friday 26 October. There will FISHING VILLAGE be another Bucket Boys concert in November, see the advert in this edition of Polgooth Times and look out for posters in the notice VAT REG NO. 501 2119 16 boards. Our Village Children

Our village children need our support - even though they might not yet realise it. We, as a village need our childrens’ support - if not now; one day. So what can we do to try and build a real sense of belonging within our young people? What are our main ‘attractions’ to date specifically aimed at our younger generation? The village panto draws some into its fold - wonderful - don’t miss out on the next one in February. The Friday club for the young ones - 6.15pm at the church. Livewires for the slightly older - up to 11 - now meeting at the Village Hall most Fridays at 6.15pm. This is a new group, desperate for new members. Fun with music for young musicians meeting at the church some Wednesday evenings at 7.30pm for ½ hour. Its aim? To involve young musicians in village events. A church run holiday club in August each year. Well done. But there are serious gaps. There is no provision for the 11+ amongst us. Also what can we do to help bring our families together socially? I’m sure there are plenty of ideas around, but they are and will be non- starters without leaders or teams. Every new venture begins with vision and enthusiasm, is sustained through encouragement and practical support, and lasts through teamwork and resolve. Does this strike a chord with you? If so, please communicate it, and see what happens.

P.S. If there are activities in the village that I am not aware of, I will scan the pages of this magazine to update myself.

Our Village

We are a blessed village to have a balance of ages living within it, creating the potential for a buzzing community spirit. Yet we struggle to gain support for much that is happening these days and so we need to ask the question why? Setting aside the fact that all small communities have to compete with so much going on around them; we still need to ask the question. Are we a connected community? WE COME Are we a co-operational community? In part the answer is ‘yes’, but can we do more to encourage one TO YOU! another to be participants in this place we call ‘home’. Of course we can! Our amazing Polgooth Times enables us to ‘speak’ to one another through its pages and its continuation is a must. So PAYE & TAX, BOOK-KEEPING whatever your ‘subject’, lets not just read about it but add to it SPECIALISING IN SMALL BUSINESSES that it might truly reflect the diversity of the community it represents. SELF ASSESSMENT RETURNS Maybe it would help if more of us aligned ourselves with the two establishments; the Village hall and the Church. Both are S T Pearce working increasingly to encourage a real sense of belonging Accountants EVERYTHING IN through what they do. Fresh ideas and input are vital to any F.S.P.A PLAIN ENGLISH organisation if it is to survive, and greater task sharing reduces the burden on the individual. All stand to gain in the end. So how about it? What hidden talents have we got or what new skills would we like to acquire? What unmet needs and desires, www.stpearceaccountants.co.uk personal or social? Giving and receiving are two sides of the email: [email protected] same coin, both are needed in order to experience a greater Fax 01726 77933 sense of purpose and fulfilment - in the individual and for the community at large. Stop and consider the bigger picture, let us ponder on what contributions we could make, however small, to this wonderful village of ours. Remember that if the well hasn’t much water in it, its in danger of drying up; and if the water is stagnant it will not refresh. So please don’t rely on the faithful few to keep us going, they may not always be there! What then?
