CONTACT: Cara Schneider (215) 206-2034, [email protected] REASONS THE PHILADELPHIA REGION IS A MUST-VISIT THIS SPRING New Museum Opens On Independence Mall & Philadelphia Museum of Art Opens New Galleries As Part Of Major Renovation PHILADELPHIA, March 1, 2021 – As spring nears and COVID-19 restrictions continue to lift, the Philadelphia region is eager to welcome visitors to safely explore new, renovated and just-reopened museums; inspired exhibits; beloved annual events; and brand new hotels. Those looking to dip their toes back into travel after a long hiatus can explore the brand-new Faith and Liberty Discovery Center, making its debut on Independence Mall in May; check out the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s new galleries, part of a Frank Gehry-designed interior expansion and renovation; and take a special twilight tour of the haunting Eastern State Penitentiary, also hosting its first-ever beer garden in the baseball diamond. When it’s time to rest their tired feet after days spent touring the town, visitors can do so at the city’s first W Hotel or at the Guild House Hotel, a boutique property in a National Historic Landmark building, both opening in spring. THREE HOURS IN Pittsburgh THERE’S A LOT TO SEE AND DO IN JUST A FEW HOURS IN PITTSBURGH. Get out and experience some of the city’s greatest highlights. CONSIDER A TOUR, which can showcase the city in a way like no other, whether guided or self-guided. Love history, art or unique architecture? Walk or bike through Downtown and other neighborhoods along the riverfront trails, or get a fantastic view from the water aboard a Gateway Clipper riverboat cruise. Plan ahead to experience Pittsburgh like a local. VISIT ONE OF THE CITY’S 90 NEIGHBORHOODS. Some are hip, some historic, where modern homes meet Victorian mansions. Pittsburgh’s North Side, with iconic Penn Brewery and the expansive Riverview Park, is a place worth exploring. While there, don’t miss the National Aviary, the only dedicated indoor bird zoo in America. In the South Side discover walking trails, restaurants, small music venues and vintage shops. Walk down Walnut Street in Shadyside to browse local boutiques, name brands and great eateries. Get inspired at one of the art galleries in Garfield, or make something of your own at the Pittsburgh Glass Center. Trendy, walkable Lawrenceville is filled with cozy coffee shops and one-of-a-kind cuisine. EXPLORE A MUSEUM. Two of the country’s top museums, the Carnegie Museum of Art and Natural History, are located in Oakland. The show, Field Guide (until 25 February 2018), which Burke co-organised with the museum’s director of programmes and chief curator, Sandra Guimarães, demonstrates some of the museum’s priorities, such as showing works by a mix of Canadian and international artists, acting as an “artist-centred” institution and being a champion for work by contemporary indigenous artists. Field Guide shows pieces from the collection (many of which come from the city’s former Mendel Art Gallery, closed in 2015), new acquisitions, site-specific commissions and loaned works by 80 artists and collectives, including John Baldessari, Kader Attia and Hito Steyerl. -

CONNECTING TO COLLECTIONS PENNSYLVANIA a five-year preservation plan for Pennsylvania PROJECT OVERVIEW Imagining Our Future: Preserving Pennsylvania’s Collections, published in August 2009, includes an in-depth analysis of conditions and needs at Pennsylvania’s collecting institutions, a detailed preservation plan to improve collections care throughout the state, and a five-year implementation timetable (2010-2015). The analysis concludes that many of Pennsylvania’s most important historic holdings must be considered at risk. Millions of items comprise these collections, and the financial resources available to care for them are limited and shrinking. Pennsylvania is a state vibrant with world-class art museums, libraries, historic sites. Arts and culture play a substantial role in creating business, jobs, and bringing revenue into the state and stewardship of its artifacts is too important —to the state, to the people, to the history of country—to be ignored. This call to action is a rallying cry for all future generations of Pennsylvanians. With generous support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and in close partnership with three leading preservation organizations, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC), the Pennsylvania Federation of Museums and Historical Organizations (PFMHO), and LYRASIS, the Conservation Center for Arts & Historic Artifacts organized and led the assessment and planning process. The project was capably guided by a Task Force with representatives from the Office of (PA) Commonwealth Libraries, the Western Pennsylvania Museum Council, the Pennsylvania Caucus of the Mid- Atlantic Regional Archives Conference, Pennsylvania State University, the Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special Collections Libraries, the University of Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Mellon University.
