Success of QNET Shows How People Without a Business Background Can Do Well Oct 24, 2013 15:56 +08 Success of QNET shows how people without a business background can do well Direct selling could provide much-needed job creation to accommodate population growth as well as rising standards of living, an industry player said. QNET Ltd managing director JR Mayer said the world today is in a consolidation of the workforce that cannot possibly provide enough jobs. "Through direct selling, we are able to provide business skills, training and, most important, jobs to developing parts of the world where they (jobs) can be scarce," he told Bernama in an interview. Mayer said according to the World Federation of Direct Selling Associations (WFDSA), which represents direct selling associations from more than 60 countries, the market size of the industry globally grew 5% last year to hit US$153 billion (RM483.3 billion) in sales. He said globally, 90 million people are involved in the direct selling business. QNET, the flagship company of QI Group, founded by Malaysian entrepreneur Datuk Seri Vijay Eswaran and Filipino entrepreneur Joseph Bismark, sells a variety of exclusive lifestyle and wellness products around the world through the multi-level marketing or direct selling method. The company is represented by more than 25 worldwide offices and agencies as well as independent representatives in more than 100 countries. Last year, the company recorded a turnover of about US$500 million (RM1.57 billion) to be ranked among the top five direct selling companies in Asia. Mayer said the direct selling model shows how people without a business background can learn skills and attitudes to keep themselves employed. He said with no gender bias, direct selling or network marketing is perfect for women. "Distributors get paid according to their output. It is fair and equal, and because of the flexibility of time, more women succeed in network marketing than in other professions," he said. Women are better communicators, are good at relating to people, have endurance, do not give up easily, and are great multi-taskers. Mayer said the company has launched the Merchant Programme in Egypt which aims to help small manufacturers market their products through QNET's online store and distributor networks. "QNET is committed to promote and support small and medium entrepreneurs' products, who otherwise have no other way to distribute and market their products." he said. Ranked in the top 30 direct selling companies in the world, QNET's sales have jumped 70% in the last five years and the company is targeting US$1 billion (RM3.16 billion) in sales and a top 10 ranking in the world by 2018. - Bernama, October 23, 2013. • 5M1b Ltr to FTC Re MLM Income and Health Claims FINAL
June 30, 2021 VIA EMAIL Samuel Levine Acting Director, Bureau of Consumer Protection Federal Trade Commission 600 Pennsylvania Ave. N.W. Washington, D.C. 20580 [email protected] Dear Mr. Levine: For far too long multilevel marketing (MLM) companies have used deceptive marketing to promote the business opportunity and sell their wares.1 In fact, the problem is so longstanding and pervasive that the MLM industry’s self-regulatory body, the Direct Selling Self-Regulatory Council (DSSRC), stated just last month that: Though the industry has made significant strides to curtail the dissemination of unsupported claims regarding income potential …, there is still a great deal of work ahead of us to assure that the product and earnings claims communicated to consumers and potential salesforce members are truthful and accurate.2 Moreover, industry trade group, the Direct Selling Association (DSA), published an article in its January 2021 journal that stated, “[d]irect sellers will never be able to wholly prevent distributors from making improper claims.”3 Such pessimism is cause for concern as improper health and income claims not only deceive consumers but also lead to social, emotional, and physical harms, and financial hardship.4 Given this backdrop, TINA.org urges the Commission to implement a penalty offense program targeting the direct selling industry and its market-wide practice of utilizing deceptive earnings representations and false health claims.5 For more than 40 years, the FTC has consistently pursued individual MLM companies making

  • How Have the Ponzi Schemes/Udss/Ciss Duped the Investors in India
How Have The Ponzi Schemes/UDSs/CISs Duped the Investors in India 1 Preface Though the nature of duping the public by promising unrealistic returns on their investment has been practiced since ages, in independent India, especially in the last few decades, there have been several such scams related to Ponzi scheme/unregulated deposit scheme (UDS)/illegal Collective Investment scheme (CIS) which have duped millions of gullible persons and have fraudulently collected billions of Rupees from them. Although the basic premise of these scams have remained same: collect money promising very high returns, pay the initial investors out of proceeds collected from subsequent investors till the scam/schemes bust, etc., the modus operandi has been evolving over the years. The idea for writing a book like this came up in discussion between teams of IEPFA and IICA, when it was discussed and decided to bring to the attention of public various Ponzi schemes/UDSs/CISs which have taken place in India over the years. To spread the message of such defrauding financial scams far and wide this book is being kept as an open source resource. In preparation of this book, active assistance was provided in terms of carrying out research, writing of cases, etc. by the research associate Shubhasree Bhadra. We are also thankful to the teams at IICA and IEPFA for their valuable comments on the subject. It is hoped that analysis of the cases contained in this booklet would prove useful to not only the public in saving them from similar defrauding schemes but also those institutions and agencies which impart financial/investor education as well as those who carry out research in this area.

  • New CASE Accreditation Scheme for Direct Selling Businesses Launched
*Channel NewsAsia New CASE accreditation scheme for direct selling businesses launched SINGAPORE: The Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) and the Direct Selling Association of Singapore (DSAS) on Thursday (Jan 8) announced the launch of their joint accreditation scheme, and more than 10 direct selling businesses have already been accredited. Direct selling is a practice in which products are sold from no fixed location. With the launch of the CaseTrust-DSAS Joint Accreditation Scheme, consumers can expect the following: A cooling off period of seven working days (excluding Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays), during which consumers may seek full refund of payment made An order form at the time of sale, with clear and accurate contact details of the direct seller A well-defined complaint mechanism put in place by the business to address disputes Besides these, accredited businesses are governed by DSAS' Code of Ethics, which ensures all direct sellers within their distribution system practice responsible and ethical selling, the press release stated. Companies must also comply with regulations that regular businesses are bound by, such as the Lemon Law, and detail the terms and conditions of any warranties and/or guarantees clearly. These terms are on top of DSAS membership criteria, which require companies to at least be registered for a year with the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority, undergo a six-month probation period where the DSAS committee will conduct investigations on business behaviour and credit ratings, submit a legal opinion on their marketing plans, and have no more than five breaches of the Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act over the past year with CASE.
