The idea behind the RED camera system is simple. Design and build a high performance digital cine camera with the quality of 35mm film and the convenience of pure digital. RED delivers unmatched image quality with no recording system limitations.

Normally when we talk of high definition we refer to HDCAM which has a resolution of 2.2 million pixels and an image sensor two thirds the size of 35mm film.

The sensor array of RED One, called "Mysterium" has 5 times greater resolution than HDCAM (12 megapixels). Her parameters are 24,4mm x 13,7mm and has 4530x2540 active pixels. "Mysterium" has relatively the same active field as the frame of Super 35 (aspect ratio 16:9), allowing for the same shallow depth of field to be produced in conjunction with lenses designed to cover the 35mm format. The camera has PL mount lenses and the result is a depth of field 35 mm with no need for adaptor lenses. The camera weighs about 4,5kg and has parameters 161x305x132mm.

The format of the camera is 4K RGB, and it can record up to four channels of 24-bit 48 KHz digital audio.

With RED One, the data is editable on set. It is the fastest workflow so far – direct recording on Compact Flash or RedRaid Drive 320 GB, transfer on hard disc or computer, import and edit in Final Cut Pro, Premiere or Avid.
