Acorns aren’t usually worth any- thing. But six acorns acquired by Mar- tin McTamney are proving to be extremely valuable. That’s because they come from a special tree, the Lovelock Oak in Timaru. As a seedling the oak was pre- sented to New Zealand athlete Jack Lovelock after he won the 1500m at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. The race, run in record time, was watched by German Fuhrer Adolf Hitler. Lovelock’s tree was then sent back (by sea voyage) to New Zealand to be planted at his old school, Timaru Boys’ High. It is believed to be one of only 16 surviving trees from the 130 seed- lings that were presented at the Olympics, and the only one in New Zealand. Mr McTamney says a few years ago he approached the school for some acorns (and associated paper- work verifying them) to grow at their Te Kawa home. “But it was a total disaster! None survived, so luckily I managed to get some more and put them in the TC071117CA01 capable hands of Peter Fraser and EIGHTEEN-month-old oak seedling with Growing Spectrum manager his team at Growing Spectrum in Grant Eyre who has been caring for them. Heritage NZ. ings, Gifford’s Building, Alexandra Build- ings, Fowlers Building and Ahier’s Build- ing. These buildings have been selected because they are named, either with the name of the original owner or subsequent owners. The aim of the project, says Sandra Metcalfe, member of the research team and convenor of the Genealogy Group, is to create a social history of heritage buildings that have been there for most of our lives and are just taken for granted. Each building has a story to tell; who designed it, built it, what it was first used for. Businesses operating out of these build- ings have changed over time but they too, each contribute to the story of the building. The research team has compiled a timeline for each building, capturing as many different tenants as possible. But there are gaps in their knowledge and in order to complete the first stage of the project, the group wants public help in providing more information. A display will be held in the Commun- ity Room at the Library on Friday and Saturday, November 17, 18, giving the public an opportunity to contribute to the history of these buildings, either as owners, tenants, employees or customers of the business that operated out of them. As part of the display, people will be given the opportunity to write their own memories or have a scribe do it for them. For those who have a broader story to tell about business life in Te Awamutu over the last few decades, the research team will be working with museum staff to record some oral histories. Retired heritage architect, Ros Empson, is part of the research team and says that the dates on the Alexandra Street build- ings indicate an explosion of construction happening in Te Awamutu in the 1920s — 1930s. Several of the buildings were designed by well known New Zealand architects and Mrs Empson suspects they were drawn to Te Awamutu because of a downturn in commercial work in the larger cities during the depression years. Although the group is not focusing on housing, this would be the timeframe that many of Te Awamutu’s art deco houses were also constructed. “The information the research team has gathered is really only scratching the surface of what the public potentially knows and that is why we want people to contribute whatever knowledge they have before it is too late,” explains Ms Metcalfe. People with old photos of Te Awamutu’s existing commercial buildings are encour- aged to bring them along as scanning facilities will be available while the display is open. The research team is also interested in finding out what the public knows about the 1929 building next to the old Courier offices, the Hutson Building, and the Coronation and Lims buildings. “We began this project after hearing Ben Pick from Heritage NZ talk about a similar project in Dargaville,” says Ms Metcalfe. “We are fortunate to have people like Alan Hall and Ros Empson actively doing the research, and Dean Taylor, editor of the Te Awamutu Courier who has been responsible for taking the images of the buildings as they are today. “The museum has also been very helpful with research assistance and photographic images used for the visual display,” explains Ms Metcalfe. Churches aren’t just a building people go to, says Shane Wildermoth, associate pastor at the Te Awamutu Bible Chapel. Churches reach out to the com- munity, and put on events like last week’s Te Awamutu Light Party. “It’s a gift from 10 Christian churches of Te Awamutu to chil- dren and families — a safe alterna- tive to Halloween,” Mr Wildermoth says. About 3000 people came to Selwyn Park for free music, rides, games and sausages. “One of my highlights was just seeing families sit down on a blanket and enjoy each other’s company.” About 100 volunteers staffed the rides, cooked 6000 sausages and handed out 1000 animal balloons.
