She said that the RCM was Page . 7 thrilled to be hosting the launch ceremony for the RVW Society’s new books and she explained that all the performers were students, or past students, of the College. Stephen Connock then described the new books to the audience, who included many representatives of the press. LINEAGES OF VOCAL PEDAGOGY IN AUSTRALIA, 1850-1950 Volume 2 by Beth Mary Williams A dissertation submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The University of Melbourne September 2002 11 Lineages of Vocal Pedagogy in Australia The following is an introductory lineage study of major lineages of vocal pedagogy in Australia. Many lineages not contained in the body of the thesis are outlined in this document. The lineage also provides a cursory glance at the major lineages of traditional Italian pedagogy which have relevance for an Australian vocal pedagogical context, and it was hoped that this might assist readers in ascertaining the long term lineage links without excessive complication. The symbol'-' indicates that the following is separated from what is immediately above, and that a new lineage has begun. Lineages are indicated as subsequent generations by the use of one tab space, to show that the following names are pupils of the aforementioned. Naturally, lists of students of particular teachers are far from complete, and some only represent one particularly successful pupil of a given teacher. Where possible dates and biographical information are given, in order to contextualise the work of a singer or teacher. The documentation of lineages is not exhaustive. Many teachers who were active between 1850 and 2000 are omitted owing to the difficulties in finding information on private studios through archival resources and the reluctance of many present teachers to participate in surveys. The following is a sample three-generation entry, with an explanation of how the lineage may be understood: ~ (Separates different schools of singers.) Discography Malcolm Walker Tis discography was begun in 1984, following a commission from the Mackerras family to contribute to Nancy Phelan’s biography of the conductor, published in 1987. At the time, Sir Charles generously gave up a whole morning and went through his diaries to fill in a number of missing dates and facts, a gesture warmly appreciated by the compiler. In the intervening years the discography has been maintained and updated. Sir Charles’s recording career spanned 58 years and was extremely varied in scope. During that time he was never exclusive to a single company. His TFSWJDFTUP$[FDINVTJD FTQFDJBMMZ%WPǣÈL +BOÈƿFLBOE.BSUJOǰ DPOWFZFE his passion for a country that he first visited not long after the end of the 4FDPOE8PSME8BS)JTFOEFBWPVSTPOCFIBMGPG)BOEFM .P[BSU #FFUIPWFO and Brahms produced revelatory recordings – as did his devoted advocacy of Arthur Sullivan. In the interests of space and clarity, only CD catalogue numbers are given unless the recording in question has not been released on CD (for details of LP releases, readers are referred to Malcolm Walker’s earlier discography in Phelan 1987). It is a measure of the length of Mackerras’s recording career that his earliest record – of Pineapple Poll – was first issued on twelve 78 r.p.m. sides, and his latest were quickly made available as downloads as well as compact discs.
