Graduate Announcements 2012-2013 NOTIFICATION OF RIGHTS UNDER THE FAMILY EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS AND PRIVACY ACT (FERPA) The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords students certain rights with respect to their education records. These rights include: 1. The right to inspect and review the student’s education records within 45 days of the day the University receives a request for access. A student should submit to the registrar, dean, head of the academic department, or other appropriate official, a written request that identifies the record(s) the student wishes to inspect. The University official will make arrangements for access and notify the student of the time and place where the records may be inspected. If the records are not maintained by the University official to whom the request was submitted, that official shall advise the student of the correct official to whom the request should be addressed. (2) The right to request the amendment of the student’s education records that the student believes are inaccurate, misleading, or otherwise in violation of the student’s privacy rights under FERPA. A student who wishes to ask the University to amend a record should write the University official responsible for the record, clearly identify the part of the record the student wants changed, and specify why it should be changed. If the University decides not to amend the record as requested, the University will notify the student in writing of the decision and the student’s right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment. Additional information regarding the hearing procedures will be provided to the student when notified of the right to a hearing. -

GeoGebra in Teaching and Learning Introductory Statistics Theodosia Prodromou [email protected] University of New England Australia Abstract: This article discusses the special opportunities for teaching statistics that technology offers teachers who aim to provide rich learning experiences for their students. These opportunities involve automation of many activities such as quickly organising data, computing measures, and generating graphs. By automating the tasks of computing statistics or generating data, technology facilitates students’ ability to visualise abstract concepts, affording an opportunity to focus on conceptual understandings and data analysis. This article also examines how GeoGebra can be integrated into the curriculum and learning process of introductory statistics to engage college students in cycles of investigation including (a) managing data (b) developing students’ knowledge for understanding specific statistical concepts, (c) performing data analysis and inference, and (d) exploring probability models. Recommendations are included for ways mathematics educators can engage college learners in developing their knowledge for exploring data concepts and doing statistics with GeoGebra. 1. Introduction We are all familiar with the increasing importance of technology within all realms of our existence. Technologies for doing and teaching statistics, such as graphing calculators, spreadsheets, and statistical packages such as SPSS, SAS, S and S-PLUS, and more recently R or Minitab, have become commonplace in many tertiary and some secondary contexts. This article discusses (1) the special opportunities for teaching statistics that technology offers teachers who aim to provide rich learning experiences for their students (2) how GeoGebra is designed for engaging college students in managing data, performing data analysis and inference, and exploring probability models is integrated into the curriculum and learning process of introductory statistics. -

Calculator From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia An electronic calculator is a small, portable electronic device used to perform both basic operations of arithmetic and complex mathematical operations. The first solid state electronic calculator was created in the 1960s, building on the extensive history of tools such as the abacus, developed around 2000 BC, and the mechanical calculator, developed in the 17th century. It was developed in parallel with the analog computers of the day. The pocket sized devices became available in the 1970s, especially after the first microprocessor developed by Intel for the Japanese calculator company Busicom. They later became commonly used within the Oil and Gas industry. 05 0672327988 CH03 6/30/05 1:20 PM Page 37 3 IN THIS CHAPTER • Testing Axioms The Realities of Software • Software Testing Terms and Testing Definitions In Chapter 1, “Software Testing Background,” and Chapter 2, “The Software Development Process,” you learned about the basics of software testing and the soft- ware development process. The information presented in these chapters offered a very high-level and arguably ideal- istic view of how software projects might be run. Unfortunately, in the real world you will never see a project perfectly follow any of the development models. You will never be given a thoroughly detailed specification that perfectly meets the customer’s needs and you will never have enough time to do all the testing you need to do. It just doesn’t happen. But, to be an effective software tester, you need to understand what the ideal process is so that you have something to aim for. The goal of this chapter is to temper that idealism with a reality check from a software tester’s perspective. It will help you see that, in practice, trade-offs and concessions must be made throughout the development cycle. Many of those trade-offs are directly related to the software test effort. The bugs you find and the problems you prevent all significantly affect the project. After reading this chapter, you’ll have a much clearer picture of the roles, the impact, and the responsibilities that software testing has and you’ll hopefully appreciate the behind-the-scenes decisions that must be made to create a software product. -
