Media Release Contact: Dominic Hennig Director, Broadcasting & Communications June 13, 2016 Dominic@Flintfirebirds.Com (810) 519-9347 for IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Release Contact: Dominic Hennig Director, Broadcasting & Communications June 13, 2016 [email protected] (810) 519-9347 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MacDonald and Matwijiw Complete Firebirds’ Coaching Staff Flint, Mich. – The Flint Firebirds completed their coaching staff hires Monday, announcing Stan Matwijiw will return as the club’s goaltending coach and Scott MacDonald as the assistant coach & video coordinator. “Stan brings a lot of OHL experience to our organization and has a proven track record in developing goaltenders in this league,” said Flint Firebirds Head Coach Ryan Oulahen. “Stan will bring knowledge, energy and a positive outlook to our club on a daily basis.” Stan Matwijiw (pronounced muh-twiv) returns for his second campaign with the Firebirds and ninth season as a goalie coach in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). In his eight seasons with the Plymouth Whalers, Stan produced four NHL draft picks including former Flint Firebirds goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic as well as Matt Hackett, Matt Mahalak and Scott Wedgewood. Prior to his time in Plymouth, Stan was the goalie consultant at the University of Michigan for seven seasons. “I am happy to be back with the Flint Firebirds for a second season,” said Matwijiw. “I look forward to an exciting year ahead.” “Stan brings tremendous experience and knowledge with an excellent record for developing young goaltenders for the next level,” said Flint Firebirds General Manager George Burnett. “He will be a valuable addition to our program.” MacDonald comes to the Firebirds with more than 12 years of experience in the sports technology field.     Public Report To: Council in Committee of the Whole From: Stephanie Sinnott, Commissioner, Finance Services Report Number: CNCL-20-146 Date of Report: July 8, 2020 Date of Meeting: July 13, 2020 Subject: Oshawa Generals Request for Support for 2021 Memorial Cup Bid File: C-1000 1.0 Purpose On February 7, 2020, the Mayor of the City of Oshawa issued a letter expressing the City’s support, in principle, the Oshawa Generals Hockey Club bid for the 2021 Memorial Cup, Attachment 1. On June 4, 2020, the Oshawa Generals officially requested financial support from the City of Oshawa for their bid to host the 2021 Memorial Cup Tournament as outlined in FIN-20- 34, Attachment 2. The request is for the City to contribute $350,000 of in-kind services and cash as well as some capital infrastructure upgrades to the Tribute Communities Centre in order to be able to host the event. The Region of Durham was also requested to contribute $350,000 of in-kind services and cash. At its meeting of June 22, 2020, City Council directed: “That Correspondence FIN-20-34 from the Oshawa Generals requesting in kind and cash support for the 2021 Memorial Cup Bid be referred to staff for a report on the request including a projected breakdown of both in-kind and financial contributions, project revenues to the City from the event and the response from the Oshawa Generals regarding outstanding financial issues between the City and the Generals.” On June 29, 2020 additional correspondence, Attachment 3, was received from the Oshawa Generals indicating that through some new information they were revising their financial support request to $250,000 from the City and $250,000 from the Region of Durham.

Photograph by: Windsor Star, Windsor Star WINDSOR, Ont. — Taylor Hall is one of the two fresh faces of the NHL’s next generation, but he’s really a throwback, a backyard rink rat who honed his dynamic game playing for hours on the ice surface outside his back door. “It’s hard to be a hockey player without a backyard rink,” said Taylor’s dad, Steve Hall, an ex-CFL player and former member of Canada’s bobsled team. “There’s no question, that’s where the kids learn.” Young Hall learned plenty noodling around on the backyard rink, to the point neither Steve nor Taylor think it accidental he has become the dynamic player he is. Last Wednesday, NHL Central Scouting rated Hall second overall in their final rankings, behind slick centre Tyler Seguin of the Ontario Hockey League’s Plymouth Whalers, after both players shared the league’s scoring title with 106 points. The two 18-year-olds have taken turns atop the rankings all season, so the final ‘pick ’em’ rating was hardly a surprise just a bit less than three months from the entry draft in Los Angeles in June.

Each have signed three year contracts. “The League is entrusting George Burnett with the hockey operations of the Flint Firebirds and we believe his experience will provide the players, parents, billets and team staff with stability and expertise,” said David Branch OHL Commissioner. “Burnett will be backed by a strong team in hockey operations, including Joe Stefan who is well known to Flint Firebirds players and families.” George Burnett, 54, is a native of Port Perry, ON and has spent his life managing, coaching and playing hockey. His junior hockey coaching career began with the Oshawa Generals in 1989 and has included coaching in both the AHL and the NHL. Most recently, Burnett was the Coach and General Manager of the Hamilton Bulldogs and which followed 9 years with the Belleville Bulls. He played for the OHL’s London Knights and the CIS’s McGill Redmen. “I am excited to be joining the Flint Firebirds organization and dedicating 100% of my time to the management of the team,” said George Burnett. “The Flint Firebirds have a bright and promising future and I look forward to being part of the team and the Genesee County community.” In addition, the League announced that Joe Stefan is returning to the role of Assistant General Manager of the Firebirds with the added responsibility of Director of Player Development.

They swap teenager for teenager. They preach education but think nothing of bartering young men just days away from exam time. Yesterday, on the day kids returned to high school, a boy named Yves Bastien, who grew up in Northern Ontario and left home to learn his junior hockey and math in Kitchener, found out that he will now be living and playing and schooling in Peterborough. Bastien is all of 17-years-old. This is his draft year. This is his professional ticket. Yes, the OHL treats these kids as though they are professionals. Except they don't pay them a whole lot of anything to be professional. Except most of them, the statistics show, will play low-level professional hockey and never any higher. In fairness, the teams do provide educational packages for their players -- which has been a source of some controversy recently -- but that, on it own isn't enough. "If there's one area we expose ourselves as not always serving (our players) it is in trading players," OHL commissioner David Branch said, clearly uncomfortable with the subject. "I am not one who is in favour of large-scale trading. I think there are valid reasons for some trades ... but we have to continue to find a way to make this right." The OHL has experimented with moving its trading deadline and putting in trading blackout periods, but typically hockey people find their way around the spirit of the rules.

In the trade, the Firebirds acquired North Bay's Maurizio Colella for Mississauga's fifth-round pick in 2019. “Maurizo is an experienced forward that we know very well,” said Flint Firebirds General Manager George Burnett. “He is a quality individual that will be a good asset to our program moving forward.” Colella, a native of Tottenham, Ont. is currently in the midst of his best OHL season, recording 16 points (6G, 10A) including 21 penalty minutes in 35 games with the Battalion. The six-foot, 187- pound forward is in his third season in the Ontario Hockey League and has competed for the Belleville Bulls, Hamilton Bulldogs and the Battalion. He’s a veteran guy that’s played a lot of games in this league," said Flint Firebirds Head Coach Ryan Oulahen. "He’s someone I’m very familiar with and I'm really excited for him to join our program.
