Enjoy the March West River Catholic Covid-19 WEST RIVER Special Pull Out Section pp. 11-14 Informing Catholicsatholic in Western South Dakota since May 1973 CDiocese of Rapid City Volume 49 Number 7 March 2021 South Dakota www.rapidcitydiocese.org Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, During Holy Week we will once again recall what Jesus Christ has done to save us from sin and death. He held nothing back in his sacrifice on the cross, so much does he love us. I pray that as we celebrate another Holy Week and Easter our hearts are open to the Lord’s great love for us and that we allow him to renew our faith. We have travelled through a challenging time in so many ways this past year and the Lord has been with us every step of the way. As more and more people receive their vaccinations the time has come to reinstate the obligation to attend Sunday and Holy Day Masses. In this edition of the West River Catholic you will find my letter doing just that and a list of important exceptions to the obligation for those who still need them. It is my deep desire and prayer that we will experience a rebirth of our faith as we emerge from the pandemic and live our Catholic life boldly in new ways that draw those around us to Jesus Christ. God bless you with good health and renewed faith. +Bishop Peter Mary and St. John stand at the foot of the cross in this depiction of Christ's crucifixion at Holy Family Church in Ramallah, West Bank. Creating mural 'was so magical' pends years painting tribute to Kapaun BY ROY WENZL The Wichita Eagle THE UNVEILING What: Mass and unveiling of artist Wendy Lewis' 12foot mural of the Rev. Emil Kapaun, a priest of the Wichita Diocese and a Korean War hero whom the Vatican is considering for sainthood. Bishop Michael Jackels will celebrate the Mass. Where: St. John's Chapel, Sacred Heart Hall, Newman University, 3100 McCormick When: Wednesday. Mass begins at 5 p.m.; the unveiling will be at 6 p.m. A reception will follow at the Newman University campus center. How much: The event is free and open to the public. VIDEO As Wendy Lewis painted a face on a mural in the chapel at Newman University a few weeks ago, something strange and wonderful happened, she said. The eight other faces in the mural — the face of potential saint Father Emil Kapaun, for example — took her many layers of paint over many days to complete, she said. "You can see how I labored when you see his face," she said. But the ninth face — the face of Jesus — took only two layers and five hours. It has colors in it that she says she will never be able to replicate. It took almost no time at all. It's the best face she's ever painted, she said. "I kept turning around and wanting to see if anybody else was watching this happen," she said. "It was so magical." The public will get to see those faces in her mural at an unveiling at 6 p.m.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER WWW.STJOHNTRYON.COM SPIRITUAL READING & REFLECTION THE COMMANDMENT OF LOVE If you don’t have love for one another, then how can you love Christ? How can they see Jesus in you? That’s why we need a clean heart, to see Jesus. Love one another. That’s all Jesus came to teach us. The whole Gospel is very, very simple. Do you love me? Obey my commandments. He’s turning and twisting just to get around to one thing: love one another. He wants us to be really, really loving…. Intense love does not measure; it just gives. To be an apostle of the Sacred Heart, one must be burning with love, intense love for your neighbor…. These words of Jesus, Love one another, even as I have loved you, should be not only a light to us, but they should also be a flame consuming the selfishness which prevents the growth of holiness. Jesus loved us to the end, to the very limit of love: the cross. This love must come from within, from our union with Christ. It must be an outpouring of our love for God, in one family, a family with the common Father, who is in heaven. Loving must be as normal to us as living and breathing, day after day until our death. Saint Teresa of Calcutta Saint Teresa of Calcutta (+ 1997) founded the Missionaries of Charity and won the Nobel Peace Prize. May Magnificat 2019 At the conclusion of their missionary journey, Paul and Barnabas tell the Antioch community all that the Lord had accomplished in their preaching the kingdom of God.

“Instaurare omnia in Christo” Hope Final Impenitence and Hope Nietzsche and Hope Heaven: Where the Morning Lies November - December 2016 Faith makes us know God: we believe in Him with all our strength but we do not see Him. Our faith, therefore, needs to be supported by the certitude that some day we will see our God, that we will possess Him and willl be united to Him forever. The virtue of hope gives us this certitude by presenting God to us as our infinite good and our eternal reward. Fresco of the five prudent virgins, St. Godehard, Hildesheim, Germany Letter from the Publisher Dear readers, Who has not heard of Pandora’s box? The Greek legend tells us that Pandora, the first woman created by Zeus, received many gifts—beauty, charm, wit, artistry, and lastly, curiosity. Included with the gifts was a box, which she was told never to open. But curiosity got the best of her. She lifted the lid, and out flew all the evils of the world, such as toil, illness, and despair. But at the bottom of the box lay Hope. Pandora’s last words were “Hope is what makes us strong. It is why we are here. It is what we fight with when all else is lost.” This story is the first thing which came to mind as I read over E Supremi, the first en- cyclical of our Patron Saint, St. Pius X. “In the midst of a progress in civilization which is justly extolled, who can avoid being appalled and afflicted when he beholds the greater part of mankind fighting among themselves so savagely as to make it seem as though strife were universal? The desire for peace is certainly harbored in every breast.” And the Pope goes on to explain that the peace of the godless is founded on sand.
