Nothing compares to being here. Plain and simple. The fantastic feats of athleticism on the track, the excitement and emotion in the stands, the concentration and attention to detail on the dais, and the enticing goods in the vendor village. This is roller derby. We are roller derby. So who will you be today? Will you be persistent and powerful, strong and swift, a leader on the track? Will you be fierce and fast and forceful, a goal setter…a record breaker? Will you be focused and creative? Will you capture that amazing shot? Will you paint your face and put on your colors? Will you chant and sing and cry and scream? One thing is clear—whether you’re a Skater, Official, photographer, announcer, or fan (or any combination thereof), TODAY YOU WILL BE ROLLER DERBY! This weekend wouldn’t be possible without the tremendous amount of support and time our hosts, Montréal Roller Derby, and all of their volunteers have put in. When you see their event staff, be sure to thank them for hosting such a fantastic tournament. Enjoy your time in Montréal and we’ll see you ‘round the track! Montréal Roller Derby is so excited to host the first Division 1 Playoff Tournament to take place in Canada. Our venue, le Centre Pierre-Charbonneau, was built in 1957 and is part of the of the Olympic Park - it hosted the wrestling events at the 1976 Summer Olympics, which the first to be hosted in Canada. We will be a few minutes away from the up-and-coming neighborhood of Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, where you will be able to find shops, restaurants and services. There is also easy access to a metro station, which will easily get you to downtown Montréal, or one of the city’s many other interesting neighborhoods. There are so many things to do in our beautiful city! A few suggestions: Old Montréal and the Pointe-à- Callières Museum, île Ste-Hélène, the Lachine Canal, the Mont-Royal, the contemporary arts and fine arts museums, the Quartier des Spectacles, or just enjoying a beautiful evening on one of our many patios. One of the oldest cities on the continent, chock-full of art, good food, and beautiful architecture, Montréal’s outdoor scene is absolutely thriving this time of year. And no need to worry about the language! Just learn a couple of words (‘Bonjour,’ ‘Merci,’ ‘Je t’aime’) and you will be welcomed with open arms! Montréal Roller Derby is so proud to host some of the sport’s best teams and to introduce you to our beautiful city. We hope you have a fantastic stay! ABOUT MONTRÉAL ROLLER DERBY Founded in 2006, Montréal Roller Derby (MTLRD) is the very first flat track roller derby league in Canada. Today, MTLRD comprises three home teams and two travel teams. In January 2009, MTLRD joined the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, becoming the first non-American league in the association. We are extremely honoured to be able to host a WFTDA Playoff tournament for the first time, especially as this is the 10th year anniversary of our league! The MTLRD players, referees, coaches, announcers and volunteers are excited to make your time in Montréal the best it can be.
