This should create a new generation of fans.By Hugh MooreAbout 40 years ago, my father get two Nostalgia Press books of Prince Valiant. I loved the strip, but the binding was terrible, and they only had about 3-4 years worth of strips. I've been looking for extend the collection every since, but reprints were all terrible and often BW and abridged. When Fantagraphics reprinted the entire run about a decade ago, I got some, but they were hard to find and were paperback. These new books are literally something I've been looking for for my entire life. These new books have vinyl covers, which are a little cheap, but much more durable than the paperbacks. More importantly, the comics are beautiful. The printing is a little larger than the old Nostalgia books, and the coloring is better. This was obviously a labor of love. Where I have over-laps, I've compared the coloring and printing. The Nostalgia books better reflect the words in the story and often color in scenes that were all blocked in one color in the older book.I bought the first one for $80 and was immediately ready to shell out that much for each.

Prince Valiant (1997) A Summary by Helen Chavez Plot Summary In a time now lost in the mists of memory, the great King Arthur rules in the legendary citadel that is Camelot. His Knights of the Round Table commit acts of derring-do and spend their spare time jousting, much to the delight of the local citizens and especially to Princess Ilene, a guest at Camelot. Watching her from afar is a young, inexperienced squire called Valiant, and when the young Welsh princess is sent home to marry Prince Arn Valiant contrives to accompany her masquerading as Sir Gawain. Meanwhile, the evil sorceress Morgan le Fey, sister to King Arthur, has convinced the tyrannical Sligon, ruler of the Viking kingdom of Thule, that he should steal Arthur's sword, the powerful and magical Excalibur, knowing that its loss could bring about Arthur's downfall. So into the fray comes Sligon's unstable and psychotic brother Thagnar, who manages to steal the sword. Pandemonium reigns. But Valiant is having problems of his own - kidnappers attempt to steal away the Princess, and after various skirmishes, including one with a mysterious character who lives in a cave and purloins treasure, women and other things of value, Valiant manages to return the Princess to her homeland - although he also manages to have a duel with the Princess' jealous fiancé, Prince Arn. All things converge as Valiant is finally informed of his heritage by the stranger from the cave … Boltar of Thule. He informs the lad that he is Prince Valiant, rightful heir to the kingdom of Thule, and with his help, Valiant returns to the land of his birth to rightfully claim what is his … Boltar (Ron Perlman) When Valiant first encounters the big, brawny and utterly fearless Boltar, it appears the man is nothing but a kidnapper and a thief.

  • Issues of Originality and Ownership in Relationship to Elzie Crisler Segar's Popeye the Sailor Man Stephen Smith
Issues of Originality and Ownership in Relationship to Elzie Crisler Segar’s Popeye the Sailor Man Stephen Smith 1 Elzie Crisler Segar’s Popeye the Sailor Man is one of the most recognizable characters in American fiction. He was not the creation of one man but rather the product of a particular place, time and culture. Segar worked within an established tradition and was supported by the newspaper and film industries that depended on the approval of their intended audiences for survival. The newspaper comic strip was a relatively new phenomenon when Segar entered the field, the landscape had already been established and his contributions would not include inventing any new language or unique art form. What Segar did accomplish was to create a world of screwball comedy and engaging characters that satisfied the needs of the American public looking for escape from the hardships of the Great Depression. In 2008, with the widespread acceptance of postmodern art theory, it is redundant to speculate on whether or not comic strips are an art form. This is an issue only relevant to modernism. It was the high standards and professional competition along with the nurturing environment provided by industries that freed artists such as Segar from the burdens of business and allowed them to prosper. Segar’s Popeye existed within two well-established genres and his adventures provided one of the primary themes for both the newspaper comic strip and the animated movie when these art forms reached a level of quality that has not been achieved since. Thimble Theatre, the comic strip that Popeye was featured in, was originally published in William Randolph Hearst’s New York Journal American.

Abandoned Cars is Tim Lane’s first collection of graphic short stories, noir- ish narratives that are united by their exploration of the great American mytho- logical drama by way of the desperate and haunted characters that populate its pages. Lane’s characters exist on the margins of society—alienated, floating in the void between hope and despair, confused but introspective. The writing is straightforward, the stories mainstream but told in a pulpy idiom with an existential edge, often in the first person, reminiscent of David Goodis’s or Jim Thompson’s prose, or of films like Pick-Up on South Street or Out of the Past. Visually, Lane’s drawing is in a realistic mode, reminiscent of Charles Burns, that heightens the tension in stories that veer between naturalism on the one hand and the comical, nightmarish, and hallucinatory on the other. Here, American culture is a thrift store and the characters are thrift store junkies living among the clutter. It’s an America depicted as a subdued and haunted Coney Island, made up of lost characters—boozing, brawling, haplessly shooting themselves in the face, and hopping freight trains in search of Elvis.
