f you just can’t resist a man in uniform, then prepare to give in entirely when Folsom Europe 2012 swings into “full gear.” Taking place in Berlin, one of the Continent’s top party towns September 5 – 11, anybody who has watched even a nanosecond of German porn knows just how serious this country takes fetish (and if you’ve never watched it, it can make Two Girls and a Cup look like a Sound of Music sing-a-long sung by a chorus of Marshmallow Peeps).

This isn’t something you can just crash, no matter how leathered-up you are. It is a huge event, and not just with regard to how very, very, VERY serious the participants take it; Folsom Europe is absolutely packed with events covering/explaining/glorify- ing every aspect of leather, rubber, BDSM, sports gear, FemDom — you name it. 25,000 attended last year’s event alone, every one in costume.

Add on to all of this the fact that Germans just love a good party, and have all but leveled venues in the quest for a good time. Many of the parties, fairs, dinners, tours, exhibitions (I can only imagine…), symposia, and even a bike run take place simulta- neously all over Berlin; some are official, others are tag-alongs by individual clubs, so a little planning goes a long way. Here are some of the “anchor events” that will give you a good taste—among other things—of how Europe likes, and licks, its leather:

1) The official Leather Dinner, on Sept. 6, with a welcome cocktail, 3-course-meal, followed by the official leather BBQ on the 7th. I’d imagine that if you are a vegan, keep it to yourself… 2) It goes without saying that dungeon parties are a cornerstone of the week, and you have a pornocopia of them to choose from: Connections on the 6th, Perverts on the 7th, PIG (the official Folsom Europe party) on the 8th, Son-of-a-Gun on the 9th, and the “Fuck the Leftovers” on the10th at Club Scheune. It may be good to know there are R&R pit stops sprinkled throughout the week so you can get your bearings. Those last three are considered the top events of the week. 3) If you think you have what it takes, step in front of the camera on the 9th at the BLF Fotoshooting. Application and Info: [email protected]. (Yes, you have to apply ahead of time. These boys mean business.) 4) And then there is that bike run (also on the 9th). The motorcycle club “Motorrad club Lederbären Berlin“ (MCLB) invites you for a BYOB (Bring Your Own Bike) tour of Berlin. TO VIEW ADDITIONAL PHOTOS For more information, got to www.folsomeurope.info. Pablo Hernandez BY KEN HUNT “What Are Kettlebells?” Model: Kettlebells are a very simple, yet incredibly effective piece of fitness training equipment.

Image Credit: A kettlebell is comprised of an iron base, shaped like a cannonball, with a solid rounded handle attached to the top - and yes you guessed it, they look a little like a kettle!

Kettlebells can be used in so many ways, that they have been referred to as a “hand held gym.” The effectiveness of kettlebells lies in their shape and the unique way in which they impact the human body. Due to the positioning of the kettlebell handle, the center of mass falls outside of your grip unlike that of a dumbbell, where the center of mass sits nice and comfortably in your hand.

When a kettlebell is swung, snatched, pushed, jerked, pressed and pulled, the unique shape forces the body to stabilize and absorb momentum while delivering explosive force and training the body to use its full elastic potential - a factor that is usually neglected through conventional training.

Kettlebell workouts tend to be full body workouts, which means a greater degree of muscle mass is used translating to greater training effect, more calories burned and better bang for your buck! Kettlebell training teaches the body how to function as a complete unit, improv- ing coordination, balance and power while seriously working the core muscles.

undreds of photographers have published volumes of male nude photography but David Vance’s books are truly works of art. Vance has been shooting nudes since the ‘70s and has published beautiful books like The Woods (1996), Timeless (2008), Heavenly Bodies (2009) and his most recent edition, Jungle Fever. Vance, born in Miami, has quite an impressive list of advertising and edito- rial assignments that includes Cosmopolitan, Entertainment Weekly, Interview, Men's Health, Rolling Stone, Tennis, Uomo and Harper's Bazaar, Italia. His celebrity portraits include Bea Arthur, William Baldwin, Steven Bauer, Toni Braxton, Gloria Estefan, Daisey Fuentes, Andy Garcia, Hal Holbrook, Sophia Loren, Ricky Martin, Johnny Mathis, Luciano Pavarotti, Steven Seagal, Eli Wallach and Dionne Warwick. David Vance’s new book, Jungle Fever, is another gorgeous showcase of male nude photography. “These richly color saturated images are of nude men who are perfect examples of masculine culture who are placed in context with the jungle in ways so imaginative that they defy description,” described one critic. Wire Magazine took the opportunity to chat with David Vance about his new book, models, celebrities and beauty.

10 | wire magazine | issue #30, 2012 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter JUNGLE FEVER BY DAVID VANCE

When did you first decide you wanted to be a photographer? When I was 14; I was into drawing portraits and I guess photography was a natural progression.

You have shot so many celebrities. Who were the most enjoy- able to photograph? For the most part those shoots are really rushed and generally there's not a lot of intimacy. I've been photographing Dionne Warwick since 1982 and over the years we've gotten very comfortable with each other so she's al- ways fun to shoot. I just did her 50th anniversary CD cover that will release late September.

What makes an easy subject? "I am a beauty Several shots of vodka. What makes an easy subject is an open nature and a pleasant personality. Someone who is really excited about being photo- addict. I am compelled graphed is always a treat to shoot. to record and interpret When did you first start shooting nudes? It was in the early ‘70s when I first started and because I am a fan of the the beauty I see." human body. I love faces and bodies without much else because the images - DAVID VANCE are classic and don't become dated as quickly as fashion images.

You’ve published several books of beautiful bodies like Time- less, Erotic Dreams and Heavenly Bodies before Jungle Fever. What inspires you to create each book? Money... no not really... I wish these projects generated more income... it's really a compulsion. Art is something that grows inside of you and at some point needs to be released. The book is just a traditional vehicle to show the work.

Tell us the story of how Jungle Fever came about and why the title. I woke up one morning and it was like the Universe was telling me to wake up and smell the coffee. I looked out the four glass doors that span one wall of the upstairs bedroom and suddenly I saw the back yard that I had been looking at for the last 20 years but I was seeing it with different eyes. I real- ized I had this great location at my fingertips and a perfect excuse to shoot more naked men so I started photographing men in the trees, against the trees, under the trees, everywhere I could find great foliage and beautiful light. My partner Kyle began collecting yard trash, like palm fronds, and leaves and fern... all kinds of great props and leaving them at the back porch door... so I then used them to do some other Jungle-esque shots in the studio as well.

How did you come to specialize in photographing gorgeous men? Just lucky I suppose. I am a beauty addict. I am compelled to record and interpret the beauty I see. I also love photographing women; in fact when I began I did a lot of that. I also shot for Bazaar Italia for a couple of years back in the ‘90s. I had several covers and got to travel to Milan and Rome.

Is there someone that you’d love to photograph but haven’t? Too many. Every beautiful face I see and my taste is very eclectic. My view of beauty is quite broad.

Your body of work is enormous with a large group of celebri- ties, commercial shots, editorial assignments, covers, and art shots. If you had to pick one shot to be remembered for, which photo would it be? Impossible. It changes daily. I love my own work... that's why I do it. It brings me great joy, so much that's sometimes it doesn't really feel like work.

11 | wire magazine | issue #30, 2012 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter JUNGLE FEVER BY DAVID VANCE

One of my favorite David Vance photos is on the cover of The Woods. The shot of the man on the horse. It’s just so beautiful and sensual. Tell us about the process of taking that photo. Did it just happen or was it planned? It was planned. The horse had to be drugged because the person who arranged getting the horse was just boarding it and didn't want to take a chance that it might bolt. He's actually just outside the frame of the shot - just in case. It's a very popular image. Something about a man and a horse in a natural setting seems to have a broad appeal.

Who are some of your favorite photographers and why? There are so many photographers these days - so many of them brilliant. I was always inspired by Richard Avedon. He was a pioneer using all the elements I love. Simplicity, elegance, excitement, and energy. I was also fond of many of the photographers who shot for the movies in the 1930s like George Hurrell. Extraordinary lighting and an impressionistic feel to the portraits, in that they were so idealized. I see elements of both these photographers in my own work. I'm not a fan of reality. Sometimes my camera and I don't see things quite the same. The photo as it's shot becomes like a proof. I find the one I like the best and then have my way with it - approaching it from an emotional point of view that expresses how I felt at the time I was taking it. I like to idealize and leave in what I like and diminish what I don't.

Your subjects all seem like perfect specimens of male beauty. Do you have any tricks that you use to make them look better than they are or all they all really perfect? The idea of perfection is a fantasy. Perfection doesn't exist. It can't because everyone's idea of what's perfect is different and fluctuates with changing cultural phenomenon. As I said before, I like to make the subject look the way I feel about them emotionally. Maybe I don't see imperfections or maybe I see them and choose not to make them my focus. All I know is my impression of the person is what ends up as the final image.

Are you available for private commission? If so, is there a website where people can go to contact you and see your work? Yes, I have always done portraits, personal, Public relations, etc.. I have a few websites. www.davidvance.com (more commercial) www.davidvanceportraits.com, and www.da- vidvanceprints.com (where I sell fine art prints and books).

12 | wire magazine | issue #30, 2012 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter 13 | wire magazine | issue #30, 2012 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter DINING BY RAFA CARVAJAL SHOPPING BAG NEW WAVE KITCHENWARE LEARNING FROM PABLO

hat does it really take to get in shape? Part of it is working out, but half the battle is proper nutrition and healthy eating habits. Can those of us accomplish this with extremely busy work schedules that find it difficult to make time to work out and eat out a lot? The answer is definitely yes. Especially if we eat properly, even when dining out.

This past Sunday I ran into Pablo Hernandez, who is the hot model pick in this week's Look- ing Good section of Wire Magazine. Pablo is in great shape, so I asked him what he did to develop such a great body and to maintain it. I was surprised to learn that it was not as difficult and time consuming as I originally thought.

Pablo shared with me that the book called The Abs Diet cookbook has been instrumental in helping him get in and stay in shape. He also told me that he eats plenty of food every day and can eat pretty much everything – with a few tweaks – to stay in shape. Pablo is very busy, travels for model shoots and is constantly eating out and on the go. I really like what I heard from him because I truly enjoy eating, cooking, and dining out and hate the idea of having to go on some restrictive diet to get in shape and stay that way.

The Abs Diet cookbook (now available in its updated version called The New Abs Diet cookbook) was written by David Zinczenko, Editor in Chief of Men's Health. You can buy the book in hardcover or electronic format from Amazon for your Kindle (or Kindle app for your iPad) or as an iBook for your iPad – which I did. You can actually download a pretty long sample of the book and get a good idea of what it's about before you buy it. I definitely think Pablo is on to something and this book will help me get in shape because I can actually eat following its guidelines!

It would be impossible to describe the book in detail in a half page column, but I can give you a high level overview of why I like it. It is based on “guy-food” menus that in- clude normal meals, snacks and a restaurant dining guide focusing on steak, chicken, cheese, and nuts. It also emphasizes 12 “superfoods” that will change your eating habits. It does not focus on really limiting what you can eat and does not contain a silver bullet, so you will have to do a little homework and stick to the plan to get in shape, but I find that to be expected and reasonable.

Pablo also shared with me that he tries to work out at least 5 days a week for one hour, or 20 minutes if that is all the time he has available. An investment in my body and my health is well worth finding one hour a day to make this happen. Best way to do this is to schedule your workout on your calendar like you do for any work related meetings. “Meet” with your body every day for one hour and you will be surprised by the results. The Abs Diet cookbook also includes a workout program that emphasizes strength and interval training with a focus on lower-body workouts to help you develop your abs.

Every time I focus on eating better and working out I get results. This time I want a more permanent solution and a change in my eating and dining habits to stay in shape for the long term – which studies have proven is good for our health. I want to thank Pablo for sharing his tips with me and telling me about the The Abs Diet cookbook!
