J Mark Percival - Making music radio: the record industry and popular music production in the UK i ABSTRACT Music radio is the most listened to form of radio, and one of the least researched by academic ethnographers. This research project addresses industry structure and agency in an investigation into the relationship between music radio and the record industry in the UK, how that relationship works to produce music radio and to shape the production of popular music. The underlying context for this research is Peterson's production of culture perspective. The research is in three parts: a model of music radio production and consumption, an ethnographic investigation focusing on music radio programmers and record industry pluggers, and an ethnographic investigation into the use of specialist music radio programming by alternative pop and rock artists in Glasgow, Scotland. The research has four main conclusions: music radio continues to be central to the record industry's promotional strategy for new commercial recordings; music radio is increasing able to mediate the production practices of the popular music industry; that mediation is focused through the social relationship between music radio programmers and record industry pluggers; cultural practices of musicians are developed and mediated by consumption of specialist music radio, as they become part of specialist music radio. -

Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Culture and Creative Arts College of Arts University of Glasgow April 2016 ABSTRACT Copyright markets, it is said, are ‘winner takes all’ markets favouring the interests of corporate investors over the interests of primary creators. However, little is known about popular music creators’ ‘lived experience’ of copyright. This thesis interrogates key aspects of copyright transactions between creators and investors operating in the UK music industries using analysis of various copyright related documents and semi-structured interviews with creators and investors. The research found considerable variety in the types of ‘deal’ creators enter into and considerable divergence in the potential rewards. -

L'impressione che avevamo, chi più chi meno, era insomma quella di un mercato piuttosto livellato, magari nemmeno troppo verso il basso, ma in cui era difficile individuare dischi (oddio, che termine fuori dal tempo!) che potessero avere le qualità se non tutti del capolavoro, ma che almeno si sarebbero potuti ricordare a lungo negli anni a venire. Attribuivamo anche la colpa ai nostro ascolti sempre più dispersivi, improntati ad una 'mentalità' del peer2peer. I risultati delle classifiche del 2007 sembrano dirci il contrario. -
