Saving our open spaces Dore Village Society is seeking to register three large open spaces in the village as village greens; Dore Recreation Ground, Totley Brook Playing Field and Kings Croft Playing Field (adjoining Dore Primary school). All three open spaces are well used for recreation and provide an important local amenity for residents. The Commons Act 2006 which came into force on 6 April this year is creating a renewed interest in communities registering new village greens. You know, in the ‘old’ days, we never seemed to use the words Organic, Local or Traditional. When I was a kid, my local shop was run by a man called Arthur. He just seemed to have both everyday shopping & useful things but he always seemed to stock something just that little bit different; fantastic biscuits, cakes, sweets & chocolates. I suppose these days we call it “fine food”but then it was something very special.

In Dore, we’ve tried to bring that back. The same “old fashioned” feeling & friendliness but adding those special foods & treats we loved so much in Arthur’s day.. Friends Reunited On Saturday 20th October the Dore Oral History group held a second reunion for past pupils of Dore Old School. It was well attended by many former classmates who came from all over the country. They all enjoyed the chance to catch up with the past and remember shared experiences from their school days. By the sound of the constant laughter in the room most of the memories were amusing ones! The Oral History group had mounted a new display of photographs and stories about the Shops and Shopkeepers, Pubs and Publicans in Dore Village from 1904 to 1995. This was of great interest and provided a focus for all visitors as well as an opportunity to share yet more reminiscences of childhood. We would like to thank all those who came along to support this event and helped to make the day so worthwhile.
