THE PRESIDENT On behalf of our entire Rocket community, congratulations on your graduation from The University of Toledo.

We are living through extraordinary and unprecedented circumstances as the world responds to the COVID-19 pandemic. While we cannot gather together for our traditional commencement celebration, your hard work and perseverance needs to be celebrated. I am heartbroken that I am not able to shake your hand and personally congratulate you as you walk across the commencement stage. Please know, I’m incredibly proud of you – and I’m sure I speak for your family, friends and all who have supported you throughout your education. While you have done the work, today is the realization of a dream shared by many people in your life.

During our virtual commencement celebration, all of us at The University of Toledo are recognizing your last sixteen or more years of formal education, the countless hours of study, exams and projects, and the creativity and determination that brought you here.

At the same time, we celebrate your future successes. No matter what your next step is, you have the educational foundation to succeed. As a graduate of The University of Toledo, you are now empowered with much more than a diploma. Your critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and the ability to adapt in uncertain circumstances, will always be in high demand.

THE UNIVERSITY OF TOLEDO | COMMENCEMENT | SPRING 2020 73 A C A D E M I C Robes and hoods worn during the commencement are steeped in tradition that REGALIA dates to the 11th century, when the monks who administered Oxford University in England wore shoulder capes to protect themselves from scratches when they gathered alms, and hoods to protect their shaven heads from the cold. Eventually, the garb was worn daily to serve as both insulation from the damp and cold inside the university’s walls and as identification that one had permission to pass into specific college buildings. Field of Study Color of the Hoods Velvet Border Represented Similar practices were later adopted by the monks who administered Cambridge Agriculture Maize University in England in the 12th century, and in later years by other universities administered by the Benedictine, Franciscan and Dominican monks across Arts, Letters, Humanities White much of western Europe. Business Administration, Drab Commerce In the United States, the academic robes and hoods were first adopted as ceremonial Dentistry Lilac attire for college officials in 1754 at the institution now known as Columbia University.

Economics Copper In 1885, students in many of the country’s colleges and universities launched a movement to permit graduating candidates to wear robes and caps during the Education Light Blue commencement. Eight years later, an intercollegiate commission of university Engineering Orange officials adopted the country’s first code of color and design for the academic garb. Fine Arts, Architecture Brown Faculty soon adopted the custom of wearing gowns at commencement and other academic ceremonies. Although the code has been revised many times, today’s Forestry Russet academic regalia represents those modifications accepted in 1960 and adopted Journalism Crimson by nearly 95% of the nation’s postsecondary institutions. Law Purple In the United States today, the academic robe is most often black; some Library Science Lemon institutions, however, sanction the use of specific colors. The length of the robe, Medicine Green the width of the sleeves’ borders and the length of the hood all increase with Music Pink each advanced degree.

Veterinary Science Gray GRADUATION Although many traditions of academe are treasured and maintained with rigor, W I T H others evolve to complement the distinct personality of the institution and its focus on students. Such was the case in the fall of 1995 at The University of Toledo, DISTINCTIONS when it replaced its single, campus-wide honors convocation with more personal ceremonies hosted by the dean and faculty of each academic college.

Changes in the convocation’s format led to changes in how faculty select and recognize outstanding students within their respective colleges. One significant change has been the awarding of medallions to graduates of the University Honors Program.

The University recognizes outstanding academic achievement based on grade point average in the law and baccalaureate colleges by awarding the degree Cum Laude (with Honors), Magna Cum Laude (with High Honors) and Summa Cum Laude (with Highest Honors). At the associate level, this designation is High Scholarship.

In addition, the University now bestows colored cords to honor all baccalaureate and associate candidates who qualify for graduation with distinction.

HONORS The Honors College presents its graduating candidates with cast medallions that COLLEGE hang from gold ribbons and diplomas indicating the completion of all the honors requirements of their baccalaureate colleges. These candidates, the Honors MEDALLIONS College dean and the directors of each college’s honors program are wearing their medallions in today’s ceremony. In order to qualify for graduation with the Honors College diploma and medallion, each student must maintain at least a 3.3 cumulative grade point average, earn a substantial number of credits through designated honors courses, complete a thesis or research project and satisfy all the other requirements of his or her respective college’s honors program.

HONORS CORDS The University has awarded honors cords to all undergraduate candidates who will graduate with distinction. Blue and gold twisted cords have been awarded to each baccalaureate student who maintained a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.9 for all college work and who will be granted a diploma bearing the words Summa Cum Laude, the University’s highest of three special honors. Blue cords have been awarded to each baccalaureate student maintaining a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.6 and who will graduate Magna Cum Laude, the University’s second highest honor. Gold cords have been awarded to each baccalaureate student maintaining a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.3 and who will graduate Cum Laude, the University’s third highest honor. White cords have been awarded to each associate student maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or higher throughout his or her studies and who will graduate with High Scholarship.

MILITARY CORDS Red, white and blue military honor cords recognize graduates who have served or are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces.

THE UNIVERSITY OF TOLEDO | COMMENCEMENT | SPRING 2020 75 HISTORY OF The University of Toledo is a nationally recognized, comprehensive, doctoral- THE UNIVERSITY granting, metropolitan research institution. The University was founded in 1872 by Jesup W. Scott, a public-spirited Toledoan, who donated 160 acres OF TOLEDO of land as an endowment for a university to train young people for roles in what Scott believed would be the “Future Great City of the World.” Called the Toledo University of Arts and Trades, it provided only a limited curriculum and closed its doors in 1875 due to a lack of funding. In 1884, the institution reopened as the Toledo Manual Training School after Scott’s sons gave the remaining assets of the University to the city.

In 1928, Toledo taxpayers approved a bond levy to raise funds to build a new, permanent home for the institution after many years of existing in temporary locations. Three years later, the University moved to the new Bancroft Street campus. The University continued as a municipal institution until 1967, when it joined Ohio’s system of public higher education.

On July 1, 2006, The University of Toledo merged with the Medical University of Ohio. The medical school was created by the state legislature in 1964 as a stand-alone institution to help meet the country’s urgent need for physicians. Originally housed in Lucas County’s former tuberculosis hospital, the Health Science Campus is located in south Toledo in buildings designed by the internationally known architect Minoru Yamasaki. Through this merger, the University now offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in programs in the arts; humanities; social sciences; natural sciences; engineering; education; pharmacy; health professions, including nursing and medicine; and the law. It is one of only a handful of public institutions in the country that provides such a broad range of undergraduate, professional and graduate programs.

S E A L O F The basic design has been used since 1931, when permission to use the coat of THE UNIVERSITY arms was granted by Don Jose Ballester, the mayor of Toledo, Spain. The seal recognizes the sister-city relationship between Toledo, Ohio, and Toledo, Spain. OF TOLEDO The University’s motto, inscribed in old Spanish at the base of the seal, reads: “Coadyuvando el Presente, Formando el Porvenir,” which translates to “Guide to the Present, Moulder of the Future.” The seal bears a large, blue eagle holding a shield divided into four segments. The upper left portion is from the original Spanish coat of arms. In 2006, the seal was changed to add three new shield quadrants to represent the University’s mission of education and research and the merger with the Medical University of Ohio. The banner below the eagle includes four dates: 1872, the year the University was founded; 1884, the year it became a municipal institution; 1967, the year it joined Ohio’s system of higher education; and 2006, the year it merged with the Medical University of Ohio.
