  • Church of Ireland Parish Registers
National Archives Church of Ireland Parish Registers SURROGATES This listing of Church of Ireland parochial records available in the National Archives is not a list of original parochial returns. Instead it is a list of transcripts, abstracts, and single returns. The Parish Searches consist of thirteen volumes of searches made in Church of Ireland parochial returns (generally baptisms, but sometimes also marriages). The searches were requested in order to ascertain whether the applicant to the Public Record Office of Ireland in the post-1908 period was entitled to an Old Age Pension based on evidence abstracted from the parochial returns then in existence in the Public Record Office of Ireland. Sometimes only one search – against a specific individual – has been recorded from a given parish. Multiple searches against various individuals in city parishes have been recorded in volume 13 and all thirteen volumes are now available for consultation on six microfilms, reference numbers: MFGS 55/1–5 and MFGS 56/1. Many of the surviving transcripts are for one individual only – for example, accessions 999/562 and 999/565 respectively, are certified copy entries in parish registers of baptisms ordered according to address, parish, diocese; or extracts from parish registers for baptismal searches. Many such extracts are for one individual in one parish only. Some of the extracts relate to a specific surname only – for example accession M 474 is a search against the surname ”Seymour” solely (with related names). Many of the transcripts relate to Church of Ireland parochial microfilms – a programme of microfilming which was carried out by the Public Record Office of Ireland in the 1950s.

  • Rates and Valuation
Cavan County Council Rates Archives service Cavan County Council Rates Until recent times, the main income of local authorities was derived from rates charged on property. Before the introduction of the Local Government (Ireland) Act, 1898, the principal local taxes were the county cess (collected by the Grand Jury), the poor rate (collected by the Boards of Guardians) and various rates paid in towns including water and improvement rates. After the 1898 Act, the rates were amalgamated into the poor rate for the county. In municipal areas there were additional rates made for particular which were consolidated into one municipal rate during the period 1930-46. County councils, county boroughs and borough corporations and urban district councils are rating authorities, but since 1946 town commissioners are not. The main archives created by the rating activities of local authorities are rate books. These volumes record the names and addresses of ratepayers and the amounts paid. They are arranged by electoral division and townland. The amount due in rates is based on the valuation of the property as set out in the valuation list. The rate books were written annually with the amounts due by each ratepayer and were open for public inspection for a period. • The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers
THE LIST of CHURCH OF IRELAND PARISH REGISTERS A Colour-coded Resource Accounting For What Survives; Where It Is; & With Additional Information of Copies, Transcripts and Online Indexes SEPTEMBER 2021 The List of Parish Registers The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers was originally compiled in-house for the Public Record Office of Ireland (PROI), now the National Archives of Ireland (NAI), by Miss Margaret Griffith (1911-2001) Deputy Keeper of the PROI during the 1950s. Griffith’s original list (which was titled the Table of Parochial Records and Copies) was based on inventories returned by the parochial officers about the year 1875/6, and thereafter corrected in the light of subsequent events - most particularly the tragic destruction of the PROI in 1922 when over 500 collections were destroyed. A table showing the position before 1922 had been published in July 1891 as an appendix to the 23rd Report of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records Office of Ireland. In the light of the 1922 fire, the list changed dramatically – the large numbers of collections underlined indicated that they had been destroyed by fire in 1922. The List has been updated regularly since 1984, when PROI agreed that the RCB Library should be the place of deposit for Church of Ireland registers. Under the tenure of Dr Raymond Refaussé, the Church’s first professional archivist, the work of gathering in registers and other local records from local custody was carried out in earnest and today the RCB Library’s parish collections number 1,114. The Library is also responsible for the care of registers that remain in local custody, although until they are transferred it is difficult to ascertain exactly what dates are covered.

  • The World of the Cavan Cottier During the Great Irish Famine
The World of the Cavan Cottier during the Great Irish Famine Ciarán Reilly Centre for the Study of Historic Irish Houses & Estates, Maynooth University In 1845, on the eve of the Great Irish Famine, the cottier class numbered some three million people. Despite such large numbers we know little of the individual experience of cottiers as they are absent from both the historiography and the social memory of the period. At the bottom of the social and economic pyramid, and entirely dependent on the potato as their staple diet, the cottier class remain hidden in the Famine narrative, mainly because of the supposed paucity of sources. And so the cottier class remains the largest body of people in nineteenth-century Ireland about whom we know the least. This essay considers the world of the cottier, using recently discovered primary sources from County Cavan as a case study. Theirs was a precarious existence and one which was often determined by outside factors, beyond their control. Yet, the question remains: who was ultimately responsible for them when the Famine crisis commenced. Landlords, at the top of the economic pyramid or the small farmer class who had facilitated their existence? In Cavan the poor are unemployed and starving.
