  • John Edwards to Deliver Hector Crawford Memorial Lecture
MEDIA RELEASE: Thursday 12 November 2015 JOHN EDWARDS TO DELIVER HECTOR CRAWFORD MEMORIAL LECTURE Screen Producers Australia is delighted to announce that John Edwards will deliver the prestigious Hector Crawford Memorial Lecture on Wednesday, 18 November at 10am at the SCREEN FOREVER Conference 2015 to be held at Melbourne’s Crown Conference Centre. John Edwards is one of Australia’s most successful television producers. He has produced more than 600 hours of television drama and holds over 30 production credits. A master of the one-hour series drama, Edwards is best known for his rich, complex character dramas that have gone on to become era-defining programs. These include the multi-award winning series Love My Way, The Secret Life of Us and audience favourite Offspring, which enters its sixth season for Network Ten in 2016. Love My Way was a landmark in Australian television production as the first high-quality in- house drama to screen on pay television, and The Secret Life of Us together with Edwards’ six-time Logie Award-winning series Police Rescue remain the only two Australian episodic series ever commissioned for primetime in the UK. Creating works for major national and international networks including Network Ten, Network Seven, Nine Network, ABC, Foxtel, New Line, BBC, Channel 4 UK and BSky B, Edwards’ further production credits include The Surgeon, Dangerous, Rush, Tangle, Puberty Blues, Party Tricks, and The Beautiful Lie, which currently screens on the ABC. Edwards has also produced mini-series and telemovies including the Golden Globe nominated mini-series On the Beach; Marking Time, winner of 7 AFI Awards, the NSW Premier’s Literary Award, AWGIE Award and others; Do or Die; Children of the Dragon; Tracy; six telemovies in the Cody series; Beaconsfield; and Paper Giants.

  • Submission for Inquiry Into Creative & Cultural
SUBMISSION FOR INQUIRY INTO CREATIVE & CULTURAL INDUSTRIES John Edwards AM I’m a television producer with the fortune of experience of having made $600 million worth of content across 30 years, employing a few thousand people per year, and though the multiplier effects of this are debateable, they’re certainly considerable (the best known are Police Rescue, Secrete Life of Us, Love My Way, Offspring, Paper Giants, Howzat!). All this work and economic activity is dependent on writers, and those writers had to start somewhere before they could ram their foot through the television door. It’s not as if people suddenly fall into television writing from the sky. They have to start writing somewhere, and almost always they’re starved for a good while before having enough work to be noticed. Often, they worked in other fields in parallel or previously. On Police Rescue for example there were a couple of novelists, a playwright, and two former journalists; on Secret Life a couple of playwrights, a novelist etc. As a matter of policy aspiration, we try to employ at least one “new chump” on every show, and these are only noticed because they’ve written a book or a play, in one case, a book of poetry, which gives us the capacity to take a risk and bring them into a world where they can make an income. But that first step almost always has been supported by some (usually very small) investment of public funds. The health of an industry like ours is utterly dependent on the nurturing of writing aspiration and writing talent.

  • John Edwards -‐ Hector Crawford Memorial Lecture
John Edwards - Hector Crawford Memorial Lecture SCREEN FOREVER 2015 17.11.15 “Don’t look back... something might be gaining on you” Satchell Paige said that more than sixty years ago (so did the Book of Genesis maybe three thousand years before that). It’s been something of a watchword for me for all the years I’ve been in this business. I suspect it is for most of us - doubt and faltering are corrosive, looking back at what we’ve left behind is mostly of little practical value once we’ve chosen our path. Except sometimes you have to… When I was invited to make this address, quite apart from being very flattered, it of course made me think “why”? Most of the people who’ve done this have been the great and the good, those with a big or special view of the world and of our culture. But I’m a television drama producer, still practicing. Historically, a couple of producers have addressed, but after they’ve stopped being producers. Maybe there’s a message here. I was told though that the perspective of one who’s been doing a lot for a long time, and still keeps turning up, might give a useful perspective of where we are as a business, at least in the one area I ought to know something about, tv drama. So, this might be a much narrower view of the world than usually is preferred in this address. It seems absurdly narrow given the events of the past weekend. But I press on, that’s what we producers do.

  • Ronny-Chieng-International-Student
Ronny Chieng: International Student Study hard. Get good marks. Make your parents proud. Well that was the plan. Meet Ronny Chieng. He’s a Malaysian student who’s come to Australia to study law. He’s smart, driven and competitive, which would make him the perfect law student, if he actually wanted to be a lawyer. Going to a “western country” for a University education is a big deal for people in Asia and an even bigger deal for their parents. When Ronny is admitted into Law School in Australia it’s a dream come true for his parents who, as is customary, send him over and pay for everything. As we follow Ronny from his first day on campus to the final exam of semester, he’ll face binge-drinking Australians, pompous blazer-wearing private school kids and hyper competitive anti-social Asian students who want him to act “more Asian”. And to really shake things up, the latest “international” arrival is the brash American student Craig Cooper who crash lands at International House taking it from a quiet, studious space to a party frat house in less than 24 hours. Adding to the chaos is Professor Dale, the aging law lecturer who has spent the last twenty years quietly going insane and now runs his class like a cage fight. For some reason he has taken a real liking to Ronny. Blunt, barbed and not afraid to cut through BS, it’s not long before Ronny is at odds with most people on campus. A genuine outsider, Ronny is super suspicious of any group that wants him as a member - be it the rowdy Australians, the Mah-jong playing Asians or the blueblood...idiots.
