Mesue de consolatione medicinarum: et correctione operationum earundem. Grabadin ejusdem Mesue medicinarum universalium quod antidotarium nuncupatur. Liber ejusdem medicinarum particularium. Additio Petri Apponi . . . in librum Joan. Mesue. Antidotarium. . . Nicolai Cophonis . . . Isagoge. Two parts in one. 8vo. Contemporary limp vellum with overlapping edges. The extremely rare second edition (2 copies located). This work deals with an influential medieval Latin text about purgatives, traditionally attributed to Johannes Mesue of Damascus (also called Johanes Mesue, the Younger, or pseudo-Mesue). The author has never been traced and researchers have come to the conclusion that the main writer may have been the Arabic author Yuhana ibn Masawaih (AD 777-859?). “The Canones consist of two parts, the first dealing with the rules of treatment in general and the second with the properties of various drugs. Touch, taste and smell are of particular importance in order to determine the characteristics of a drug, but color, age, durability and location of an herb gives additional information.” “In addition, there are fundamental theoretical concepts contained in this work, theories about natural philosophy, physiology, pathology and pharmacology.” Among the numerous sections are treatments of fever, headache, vertigo, eyesight, loss of stomach function, thirst and many more. A comparison with the Arabic sources would show the ways in which the transition of medical knowledge from Arabic to the Latin-speaking world with all its translations, interpretations and commentaries changed the understanding of the subjects concerned.” $ 9500.00
