Cycle of Prayer for the United Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway 1St Day Cycle of Prayer for the United Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway The Diocesan Cycle of Prayer is the means whereby all the people of the Diocese, and of the Church in Scotland and further afield, can be covered by prayer each month. The Cycle is observed by churches in the Diocese, but please also consider making it a cornerstone of your own daily devotions. You may also wish to refer to the Anglican Cycle of Prayer. You can also download the Porvoo Prayer Diary 2019.     PORVOO PRAYER DIARY 2021 The Porvoo Declaration commits the churches which have signed it ‘to share a common life’ and ‘to pray for and with one another’. An important way of doing this is to pray through the year for the Porvoo churches and their Dioceses. The Prayer Diary is a list of Porvoo Communion Dioceses or churches covering each Sunday of the year, mindful of the many calls upon compilers of intercessions, and the environmental and production costs of printing a more elaborate list. Those using the calendar are invited to choose one day each week on which they will pray for the Porvoo churches. It is hoped that individuals and parishes, cathedrals and religious orders will make use of the Calendar in their own cycle of prayer week by week. In addition to the churches which have approved the Porvoo Declaration, we continue to pray for churches with observer status. Observers attend all the meetings held under the Agreement. Opening Eucharist The Synod was constituted at a celebration of the Eucharist in St Paul's & St George's Church, Edinburgh via Zoom at 9.30am on Thursday 10 June 2021. The Most Rev Mark Strange, Primus, delivered his charge to the Synod during the Eucharist, taking as his text "let your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. Do not place your light under a bushel basket. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden." He reflected on the difficulties of the Covid 19 pandemic - people had been denied the things they were accustomed to do to make their light shine and, at times, the bushel basket had felt very close. However, he drew comfort from the words of the psalmist "Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me." There had been moments in the previous year and a half when he had been afraid – fear of losing the things that were precious. However, that was not a fear about evil. Evil was about assault on godliness, an assault on one's relationship with God and a desire to turn people from God.

    Page 1 of 5 NOVEMBER 2020 NEWS FROM SEI Michaelmas ordinations: Four 2020 leavers were ordained Deacon at Michaelmas in services across the Province. On Saturday 3 October, Rebekah Cansdale (right) was ordained by the Rt Revd Kevin Pearson in St John’s Cathedral, Oban where she will serve her Title. Beki is the first Mixed Mode candidate to be ordained in the SEC, and so it was very fitting that the Revd Dr Richard Tiplady should be the preacher on that occasion. The next day two further services took place. Dr Josh Cockayne (below left with Richard) was ordained by the Rt Revd Ian Paton in St Andrews, St Andrews. Josh will serve as Assistant Curate in that congregation while also working as Lecturer in Analytic and Exegetical Theology in St Mary’s College, the School of Divinity in St Andrews University. That same afternoon in St Mary’s Cathedral, Edinburgh, David Todd and Russell Duncan were ordained by the Rt Revd Dr John Armes. David (below left) will serve as Assistant Curate in St Mark's Portobello and Russell (below right) in the Church of the Good Shepherd, Murrayfield. While only 50 guests were allowed in the Cathedral, nevertheless the service had a majestic feel. Members of St Mary’s Music School offered instrumental music during Communion, and the newly overhauled Henry Willis organ thundered in the voluntaries. Those attending these services will have heard these words that the College of Bishops have permitted for use: In a distinctive way deacons are a sign of the proclamation and humility which mark all service offered in the name of Christ, bearing witness to the Lord who laid aside all claims of dignity, assumed the nature of a slave and accepted death on a cross.

Honourable Boris Johnson MP Prime Minister Office of the Prime Minister 10 Downing Street London SW1A 2AA Dear Prime Minister, At the end of January this year, we wrote to you along with over 50 of our members, regarding our deep concerns about the prospect of a merger between DFID and the FCO based on anxiety about what this could mean for the UK’s leading role in eradicating poverty and tackling climate change in the world’s poorest countries. On 16 June, you announced that this merger would indeed be taking place. There has since been widespread opposition to the merger in the international development community because of the feared implications for those who live in extreme poverty. Scotland’s International Development Alliance (the Alliance) represents a broad range of Scottish based actors engaged in global development activity across over 100 countries. These actors include international NGOs, faith-based organisations, companies, universities, charitable trusts and individuals. Alliance members and supporters now unanimously propose 4 key commitments the new department must make in order to ensure that enhanced policy coherence in UK foreign policy resulting from the merger maximises impact on poverty eradication in the world’s poorest countries. The four commitments are: 1. Commitment to poverty eradication and aid effectiveness This means: continued 0.7% GNI allocated to ODA that has poverty eradication as its primary purpose; adherence to OECD Development Assistance Committee rules, compliance with existing UK provisions under the International Development Acts and never a return to ‘tied aid’. 2. Commitment to accountability, transparency and scrutiny This means: retention of a cabinet level Minister accountable for International Development to Parliament; supporting MPs to retain a Select Committee in the House of Commons with responsibility for scrutinising ODA spending and activity across Government separate to the existing Foreign Affairs Committee 3.
