Alvord WESTFIELD: Christine Ruth (Gogol) Alvord passed away unexpectedly on May 29, 2018. She was born on November 30, 1965 in Westfield, MA to Peter Gogol and Eva (DeRock) Gogol. She leaves behind her loving hus- band Daniel Alvord of 34 years, being happily married for 25, along with her two sons Bradley Alvord (19) and Sean Alvord (16). Also, left behind are her 3 brothers and 4 sisters. Some of her beloved memories are with her sister Irene Gogol adventuring places and especially winning the Westfield river canoe races with her. She loved spending all her free time outdoors especially hiking any mountains she came across; some of her favorite mountains being Mount Monadnock, Sleeping Giant and Heublein Tower. Her dream was to someday hike Mount Washington. Her passion was kayaking on the Connecticut River and the Long Island Sound with her various groups, especially with her three closest friends Katie Cook, Steph Baver-Kexel, and Barbara Mulholland. Chris was a member of the Connecticut kayak- ing and hiking community on Meetup where she made many lasting friendships and shared her adventurous spirit. The Mean Girls, a group of four paddling friends, came out of this community. They shared a closeness that grew out of a shared love of kayaking and adventure seeking. The Mean Girls were anything but mean, sharing friendship, support, compassion, and a love of the outdoor adventures. Chris could often be found in “her happy place” on Long Island Sound leading the Mean Girls in search of a distance light- house, an outer island, or rough water. The bigger the waves, the more determined she was to paddle into them and play around and challenge herself. She could often be heard yell- ing “Life is good!”. Her excitement was infectious. The St. Mary High School baseball team stepped up to the plate to deliver $1,500 to Jericho House as a result of their latest fundraising effort – they presented the check prior to Thursday’s contest – and rose up with a seventh-inning rally to complete a heavenly 5-4 comeback win over Mount Everett at Westfield Middle School North. St. Mary’s scored three runs in the seventh to slip past the opposition. Some members of the St. Mary High School baseball team stand alongside Jericho House representative Dean Proulx and Matt Masciadrelli (run, RBI) and Aidan Burke (2 runs) led executive director Sister Joan Magnani prior to taking the field for Thursday’s high school baseball game against Mount St. Mary’s with two hits apiece. (Photo by Chris Putz) (walk, run), Hunter Authier (2 RBIs), Quinn Powers (2 RBIs), Jake Butler, and Kevin Rockwal each had one hit. Jack Masciadrelli also tossed a complete game, striking out seven batters in the process. TEAMING UP FOR A GOOD CAUSE: It is the fifth straight year that the St. Mary baseball team raised money for a good cause. The Saints have donated a total of nearly $20,000 to Massachusetts General Hospital, Wounded Warriors, Shriners, New England Adventures, and now, Jericho House, a bureau for exceptional children and adults during that time period. Jericho House strives to bring dignity, respect, and whole- ness to the lives of people with disabilities and families. “We are very grateful that St. Mary’s chose Jericho,” said Sister Joan Magnani, executive director for the Bureau for Exceptional Children and Adults/Jericho.
