Chapter one provides background material on the literary and legal source material used in this study and considers the cases of Augustus’ daughter and granddaughter as a backdrop to the legal and political thinking that follows. The remainder of the dissertation is divided according to women’s roles in criminal trials. Chapter two, encompassing the largest body of evidence, addresses the role of women as defendants, and this chapter is split into three thematic parts that concentrate on charges of adultery, treason, and other crimes. A recurring question is whether the defendants were indicted for reasons specific to them or the indictments were meant to injure their male family members politically. Analysis of these cases reveals that most of the accused women suffered harm without the damage being shared by their male family members. Chapter three considers that a handful of powerful women also filled the role of prosecutor, a role technically denied to them under the law. Resourceful and powerful imperial women like Messalina and Agrippina found ways to use criminal accusations to remove political enemies. Chapter four investigates women in the role of witnesses in criminal trials. -

INTRODUCTION There is perhaps no more shining example of the extent to which the field of Roman studies has been enriched by a renewed engagement with anthropology and other cognate disciplines than the efflorescence of interest in the Vestal virgins that has followed Mary Beard’s path-breaking article regarding these priestesses’ “sexual status.”1 No longer content to treat the privileges and ritual obligations of this priesthood as the vestiges of some original position (whether as wives or daughters) in the household of the early Roman kings, scholars now interrogate these features as part of the broader frameworks of social and cultural meaning through which Roman concepts of family, * Published in Classical Antiquity 34.1 (2015). Women in Livy and Tacitus By Stephen Prevoznik Prevoznik 1 Introduction Livy and Tacitus are both influential and important Roman authors. They have written two of the most influential histories of Rome. Livy covers from the founding of Rome until the Reign of Augustus. Tacitus focuses on the early empire, writing from the end of Augustus’ reign through Nero. This sets up a nice symmetry, as Tacitus picks up where Livy stops. Much has been written about the men they include, but the women also play an important role. This essay plans to outline how the women in each work are used by the authors to attain their goals. In doing so, each author’s aim is exposed. Livy: Women as Exempla Livy’s most famous work, Ab Urbe Condita, is meant to be read as a guide. -

Phi Alpha Theta Pacific Northwest Conference, 8–10 April 2021 Isabeau Newbury, Carroll College, undergraduate student, “Cleopatra VII: How Modernity Altered One of Egypt’s Most Infamous Pharaohs” Abstract: In the course of history, many people are fascinated by the “other” but this fascination stems from works that are not factual depictions of an event or person. If the personification of historical figures is continuously perpetuated in fictional works, how we interpret the evidence can then be affected by these works. This is especially true of the ancient women in power in Ancient Egypt, but specifically in the case of Cleopatra VII, who was the last Pharaoh of Egypt. This study is designed to look at how desire vs fact changes the narrative, and how we need to be cautious about exotifying the “other.” Cleopatra VII’s image in modernity has been shaped by her portrayal in Shakespeare and Dante, as well as in Renaissance and contemporary artwork (including film). By keeping this in mind, it is not wrong to be fascinated by the “other” but it raises the question of how much of a historical person’s character can we really know if the facts we perceive to be true are affected by fictional manipulations of them. OVID’S WIFE IN THE TRISTIA AND EPISTULAE EX PONTO: TRANSFORMING EROTIC ELEGY INTO CONJUGAL ELEGY by AMY NOHR PETERSEN (Under the Direction of T. KEITH DIX) ABSTRACT Augustus exiled Ovid to Tomis in AD 8 in part, the poet says, because of his carmen, the Ars Amatoria. Ovid presents the misfortunes of exile in two collections of elegiac epistles, the Tristia and Epistulae ex Ponto. As the recipient of nine epistles, Ovid’s wife is his most frequent addressee. Other poems throughout the two works also mention her. Ovid models the persona of his wife in the exile poetry on characters he developed in the Amores, Heroides, and Ars Amatoria. She appears initially as an abandoned heroine, then as a beloved from whom Ovid seeks fulfillment of his needs, and eventually becomes a pupil in imperial courtship. The resulting “conjugal love elegy” does not replace his earlier erotic elegy but recasts it as a means for Ovid to lament his misfortunes, present a new image for his poet-narrator, and immortalize his genius. VESTA AND JULIO-CLAUDIAN WOMEN IN IMPERIAL PROpagaNDA Abstract: Modern scholars have often presupposed a deliberate attempt of the Julio-Claudian house, starting with Augustus, to consti- tute an active involvement of female relatives in the cult of Vesta, turning these women in ‘honorary Vestals’ or pseudo-priestesses. As many of these assumptions have taken root in modern scholarship and, more importantly, often constitute a premise for other research, it is necessary to separate fact from fiction. After Caligula’s accession to the throne in AD 37, numerous honours were bestowed on his relatives in an attempt to undo the harm that was done to his father Germanicus, his mother Agrippina Maior and his brothers Drusus and Nero during Tiberius’ reign. In doing so, Caligula distanced himself from his predecessor, strengthened his position as a ruler and emphasized the promise of the just reign that was about to begin. Caligula’s living female relatives — his grandmother Antonia Minor and his sisters Drusilla, Livilla and Agrippina Minor — held an extraordinary public position in the beginning of his reign, which was mirrored by the privileges they received. These are described in the accounts of both Suetonius and Cassius Dio.1 The earliest account in Suetonius’ Life of Caligula states that besides honouring his deceased parents, the emperor also awarded various privileges to his male and female relatives: Post haec Antoniae aviae, quidquid umquam Livia Augusta honorum cepisset, uno senatus consulto congessit; patruum Claudium, equitem R. ad id tempus, collegam sibi in consulatu assumpsit; fratrem Tibe- rium die virilis togae adoptavit appellavitque principem iuventutis. -

A Rhetorical Use of Women in Tacitus’ Annales Jenifer M. Swindle This paper explores Tacitus’ use of women in his Annales. Though he speaks negatively of them, he cannot be considered misogynistic. He uses women rhetorically as reflections and extensions of men. Thus, his negative treatment of women can be seen more as a negative treatment of men. Swindle com- pares six women, and the men to whom they correspond. She discusses Tacitus’ intentions in the various ways he portrays these characters. She fur- ther points out that if readers of Tacitus focus their attentions on his female characters, they will be able to understand much of how he feels about their male counterparts. From his first mention of a woman—a parenthetical insinua- tion that Livia had a hand in the murder of her grandsons—it is clear that Tacitus’ treatment of women in his Annales will not be favorable. -
