BOOK REVIEWS 207 are bound into the volume in two separate locations - immediately after chapter seventeen and after the appendix. Despite the book's shortcomings, it is unquestionably a worthwhile acquisition for those who serve the general public. Explorations brings to the attention of the general reader some of the excellent research on the history of the mapping of Canada which has for too long remained inaccessible within the pages of the ACML Bulletin and Proceedings. Before one can properly review The Northward Expansion of Canada, 1914-1967, it is necessary to place the book in context as one of the nineteen-volume Canadian Centenary Series. The stated goal of the series editors was to explore the history of the peoples and lands which form the Canadian nation, through "volumes sufficiently large to permit adequate treatment of all the phases of the theme in light of modem knowledge" (p. ix). Each volume followed the prescribed format of general narra- tive, giving a balanced treatment to economic, social, and political history. The editors were fully aware of the difficulties which such constraints would impose on the individual authors, but they were confident that the rewards were worth the risks. With the spirit of Canada's centennial providing the impetus and the burgeoning supply of new archival sources furnishing the raw materials, W.L. Morton and Donald Creighton felt "justified" in publishing a new "cooperative" history of Canada. -

Colorado History Chronology 13,000 B.C. Big game hunters may have occupied area later known as Colorado. Evidence shows that they were here by at least 9200 B.C. A.D. 1 to 1299 A.D. Advent of great Prehistoric Cliff Dwelling Civilization in the Mesa Verde region. 1276 to 1299 A.D. A great drought and/or pressure from nomadic tribes forced the Cliff Dwellers to abandon their Mesa Verde homes. 1500 A.D. Ute Indians inhabit mountain areas of southern Rocky Mountains making these Native Americans the oldest continuous residents of Colorado. 1541 A.D. Coronado, famed Spanish explorer, may have crossed the southeastern corner of present Colorado on his return march to Mexico after vain hunt for the golden Seven Cities of Cibola. 1682 A.D. Explorer La Salle appropriates for France all of the area now known as Colorado east of the Rocky Mountains. 1765 A.D. Juan Maria Rivera leads Spanish expedition into San Juan and Sangre de Cristo Mountains in search of gold and silver. 1776 A.D. Friars Escalante and Dominguez seeking route from Santa Fe to California missions, traverse what is now western Colorado as far north as the White River in Rio Blanco County. 1803 A.D. Through the Louisiana Purchase, signed by President Thomas Jefferson, the United States acquires a vast area which included what is now most of eastern Colorado. While the United States lays claim to this vast territory, Native Americans have resided here for hundreds of years. 1806 A.D. Lieutenant Zebulon M. Pike and small party of U.S. -

1 The Siege of Fort Beauséjour by Chris M. Hand Notes Early Conflict in Nova Scotia 1604-1749. By the end of the 1600’s the area was decidedly French. 1713 Treaty of Utrecht After nearly 25 years of continuous war, France ceded Acadia to Britain. French and English disagreed over what actually made up Acadia. The British claimed all of Acadia, the current province of New Brunswick and parts of the current state of Maine. The French conceded Nova Scotia proper but refused to concede what is now New Brunswick and northern Maine, as well as modern Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton. They also chose to limit British ownership along the Chignecto Isthmus and also harboured ambitions to win back the peninsula and most of the Acadian settlers who, after 1713, became subjects of the British Crown. The defacto frontier lay along the Chignecto Isthmus which separates the Bay of Fundy from the Northumberland Strait on the north. Without the Isthmus and the river system to the west, France’s greatest colony along the St. Lawrence River would be completely cut off from November to April. Chignecto was the halfway house between Quebec and Louisbourg. 1721 Paul Mascarene, British governor of Nova Scotia, suggested that a small fort could be built on the neck with a garrison of 150 men. a) one atthe ridge of land at the Acadian town of Beaubassin (now Fort Lawrence) or b) one more west on the more prominent Beauséjour ridge. This never happened because British were busy fighting Mi’kmaq who were incited and abetted by the French. -

We, the people of Wisconsin, grateful to Almighty God fbr oar freedom, in order to secure its blessings, form a more perfect gorer:; • menu insure domestic tranquility, and promote the general weifars ; do establish this CONSTITUTION. ARTICLE I. DECLARATION OF RIGHTS. SECTION I. All men are born equally free and indepandent, ar;d have certain inherent rights, among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness ; to secure these rights, governments are insti tuted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of tha governed; SEC. 2. There shall be Heither slavery nor involuntary servitude m this State otherwise than for the punishment of crime, whereof the party shall have been duly convicted. SEC. 3. Every pjrson may freely speak, write and pubh'sh his sentiments on all subjects, being responsible for the abuse of that right, and no laws shall be passed to restrain or abridge the liberty of speech or of the press. In all criminal prosecutions or indictmentii for libel, the truth may be given in evidence, and if it shall appear to the jury, that the matter charged as libellous, be true, and was published with good motives, and for justifiable ends, the party shaii be acquitted ; and the jury shall have the right to determine the law and the fact. SEC. 4. The right of the people peaceably to assembly to consul': for the common good, and to petition the Government or any depa/t ment thereof, shall never be abridged. -
Fort Saint Louis Des Illinois As Well: Thomas Dongan, the Royal Governor of New York
Just as the Illinois found an ally in La Salle, the Iroquois had a powerful friend Fort Saint Louis des Illinois as well: Thomas Dongan, the royal governor of New York. An Irish soldier of fortune, he had served in the French army and then with the English. The king 1682-1691 saw something in him and sent him to the colonies. Tough, aggressive, and energetic, Dongas urged the merchants of Albany to outfit trading voyages into the Great Lakes, denied French claims to the region and the Mississippi, Fort Saint Louis des Illinois, built by Rene-Robert Cavalier, Sieur de La Salle, and encouraged Iroquois aims in the Illinois country. INTRODUCTION French Louisiana had been a thorn in the flank of Spain’s Atlantic Empire from its founding in 1699. Failure to remove that thorn in 1699 and again in 1716, when doing so would have been comparatively easy and Spanish naval forces were positioned to do so, meant that by 1762 the wound had festered, so that the colony had become what La Salle, Iberville, Bienville, and their royal masters had envisioned: a smuggling station through which French goods reached New Spain and Cuba and their goods—dye stuffs and silver mostly—reached France and helped to pay the costs of a colony that consumed more than it produced, at least so 1 far as the French crown’s finances were concerned. * © 2017 Paul E Hoffman. Welton Abstract This perspectives essay sketches how men and women of New France in the 17th and 18th centuries learned to make a living , live their lives, and express themselves under exceptionally difficult circumstances. This paper works with secondary sources, but brings new questions to old data. Among other things, the author explores how citizen learning was forbidden in 17th- and 18th-century New France, and at what historical point a critical adult education emerged. The author's narrative frame and interpretation of the sources constitute one of many legitimate forms of historical inquiry.
