IN THE YEAR since I took up my post as Ambassador of Ireland to Finland, I and my colleague Caoimh Kett have been very impressed with the strength of Irish culture activities across Finland and the numbers participating in Irish sport, music, drama and dance. There have been many highlights so far - too many to mention - but I would like particularly to praise the great work of volunteers during our St. Patrick’s ‘Week’. The Irish community in Helsinki kicked off the celebrations by organising a wonderful Ball; Irish and Finnish citizens in Tampere, Lahti and Heinola worked to great effect to ‘Green’ a lake, radio masts and a restaurant respectively to promote Ireland; and we had the second Irish Festival of Salo to finish our week of celebrations.

THE COMING MONTHS will be a busy and exciting time for the Embassy and friends of Irish culture in Finland. August we will see the Helsinki Harps battle against GAA teams from across the region at the GAA Nordic Tournament, this year in Helsinki. The city will also host the XV International Symposium of Societas Celtologica Nordica, organised by the Finnish Society for Celtic Studies.

IN SEPTEMBER, Irish artists will be featured at the Helsinki Comics Festival and at Galleria Ratamo in Jyväskylä. Also keep a watchful eye for Irish films at this year’s Helsinki International Film Festival. On 19 September, to commemorate the Easter Rising, the Embassy will host an academic seminar and screening of the documentary ‘1916: The Irish Rebellion’ at the National Museum of Finland. Our 1916 commemoration will continue at both the Irish Festival of Oulu and the Conference of the Nordic Irish Studies Network in October.

THE FIRST BIG Irish cultural event I attended when I arrived in Finland last year was the Finnish Irish Society’s ”main event” at Virgin Oil, which I greatly enjoyed. Since then Caoimh and I have much appreciated our ongoing contact with the Society and I very much look forward to attending the Irish Festival of Finland in September. I would encourage everyone to buy their tickets early to avoid disappointment!

Festivaalin päätilaisuus on tänäkin vuonna Virgin Oil -ravintolassa, perjantaina syyskuun 30 . päivä alkaen kello 20 . Tarjolla on illalli- nen ja show, jotka yhdessä maksaisivat helposti 50 euroa, mutta Finnish-Irish Societyn tekemän työn, irlantilaisten ja suomalaisten rahastojen ja säätiöiden, Irlannin suurlähetystön ja meidän hienojen sponsoriemme ansiosta olemme onnistuneet luomaan upean, kor- vin kuultavan ja suussa sulavan elämyksen vain 20 euron uskomat- toman edulliseen hintaan . Our main night will be in Virgin Oil again this year on the 30th September, Friday, starting at 20 00. . We have a show that would normally cost 50 Euros, but through the fantastic work done by the Finnish-Irish Society, Irish and Finnish cultural funds, the Irish embassy and our generous sponsors, we have managed to put together a supper bill for the unbelievable ticket price of 20 Euro . But first of all I´d like to thank you all for supporting our festival last year . It´s great to have you and Korkkijalka How is Ireland treating you? Do you miss Finland? playing at the festival. Are you looking forward to performing? Moving back in 1997 wasn’t too hard as Finland was in a recession and work was hard to come by . Of course I moved back to our Celtic It's fantastic to be invited back, especially to the Tiger Era which seemed great at that time . I continued playing music Irish Festival . We did play for the Finnish/Irish when I got back and played festivals in many countries and did some Society last year in Botta in Helsinki and at the recording with a Celtic harpist friend of mine . Ted Tuke as a young man, a member of the first Irish pipe band. Cultural activities were a vital ingredient of the Irish independence movement.

Donal Denham, former Irish Ambassador to Finland, will tell us the story of his maternal Grandfather, Edward ”Ted” Tuke, on the 4th of October in Molly Malones.

This year´s festivals touring band will be Bregáin, with gigs in Heinola, Porvoo and Tammisaari. Shamrock had the privilege of asking the band´s Joe Dowling a few questions.

Hi Joe, Glad to have your band as our touring act this year. Tell me about the history of the band. Have you played in our Festi- val before?

The band was formed in Kilkenny in about 1980, moved to London in 1987 and was based there for 14 years . We used to play all over Europe, with some highlights being supporting and singing with Ronnie Drew in Hannover, Germa- ny and playing with the Fury Brothers and Mary Irish-Finnish or Finnish-Irish? That´s quite irrelevant, Bregáin rules, Black in Ireland and Finbarr Fury in London . We this year also outside Helsinki.
