In these last years that the Congrega- tion has called me in this ministry of accompanying and animating the Department for Youth Ministry, I discovered that one of the cen- tral sectors that deserved dedication and close accompaniment is that of the Salesian Institutions of Higher Education (IUS). In many ways, together with the qualified help of so many collaborators, we did our best to sustain the process through continued reflection and planning. This journey still benefits from the initial vision and encouragement of the late Rector Major, Fr. Juan Edmundo Vecchi sdb and the tireless commitment of Fr Carlos Garulo sdb. The con- tinuing process has also seen the valid and qualified contribution of Bro. Mario Olmos and, at present, thanks to Fr Marcelo Farfán, both of whom have further enhanced and still are contributing to this journey, consolidating the basis for future development and growth of the mission. As the titles of the various contributions witness, we are at a stage of a process which is alive and forward looking, since this journey is constantly growing in its educative and pastoral intent. Within the Salesian mission, the university and higher institutes of education offer a privileged space where young people are accom- panied to achieve their full potential. The Salesian Congregation, looking to the young as the “theological place”, remains committed all over the world to ac- PRESENTATION 8 company them so as through the experience of higher education they achieve their desire for a better future. Higher education is a privileged place which coincides with that period of the life of the youth when fundamental decisions are made. It is that period of their life where more than ever the need for adult and mature educators is felt. It is a period of their life where the young are expecting us to journey with them towards destina- tions of human, spiritual and professional growth and fulfilment. All this can be done if we as Salesians of Don Bosco continue to strengthen our desire and determination towards a clearer and more pronounced identity: educators with the heart of the good shepherd. This is our educative and pastoral heritage, it is our DNA: a clear option for young people from the working classes, accom- panying them, educating them because we acknowledge that they have every right to benefit from people, experiences and institu- tions that clearly express the Salesian charism for their own growth. Salesian higher education, being a home that welcomes the young, is also a place animated by a dedicated academic commu- nity, committed to achieving professional goals. It is an environ- ment where the young person remains an active agent and not a number in a system. The present volume is clear testimony that this experience is an on-going one. Education is a constant process that needs to be examined in a continuous manner. It is a process that needs to read the signs of the times, and through a process of study, reflec- tion and discernment is called to give answers and proposals that facilitate young people’s integral growth. This constant and continuous commitment is one of the main areas of attention of the IUS, both on a world level, but also on a regional level. The various IUS institutions are continuously PRESENTATION 9 consolidating a process of evaluation of their policies and projects. They are engaged in a process that evaluates not only the quantita- tive and qualitative growth of institutions, but also the full accom- plishment of the educational-pastoral purpose, according to the characteristics of Salesian pedagogy and spirituality. Along with this charismatic emphasis, professional and pro- phetic, educational and pastoral, particular attention is also being dedicated to the context and culture in which young people find themselves both during their learning experience as much as the challenges they will face in the future. Interacting with one’s cultur- al identity, social challenges and future scenarios is a call to render education much more of teaching and information, but a process of integral growth within a holistic vision of time and space. I conclude with a phrase by Pope Francis in one of his speech- es on education: To educate is an act of love, it is to give life. And love is demand- ing, it calls for the best resources, for a reawakening of the pas- sion to begin this path patiently with young people. The educator in Catholic schools must be, first and foremost, competent and qualified but, at the same time, someone who is rich in humanity and capable of being with young people in a style of pedagogy that helps promote their human and spiritual growth. Youth are in need of quality teaching along with values that are not only articu- lated but witnessed to. Consistency is an indispensable factor in the education of young people! Consistency! We cannot grow and we cannot educate without consistency: consistency and witness! (February 13, 2014). May these words be an encouragement and strength to move on in this journey. Fr. When this solemnity coincides with a Sunday of Paschal Time, the celebration is transferred to the first free day following (cf Roman Missal, General norms for the liturgical year and the Calendar, nn. 5, 60). A serious attack of typhus contracted at the age of twenty- three made a deep spiritual impression on her: the experience of her physical frailty deepened her abandonment to God and prompted her to open a dress-making workshop to teach local girls to work, pray and love God. Thanks to her intense sacramental life and the enlightened guidance of Don Pestarino, she made great progress in the spiritual life. In 1872 Don Bosco chose her to take on the foundation of the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians.

I was a member of SDS (Students for a DemocraticI Society), and had come with my boyfriend to see what Peace With Freedom were up to. I recall thinking that McAuley, who represented everything despicable to us, was a surpringly small man. His deeply etched face suggested he had taken quite a bit of punishment in his time, while his voice, so clearly tutored into its cultured modulations, was almost feminine. He had a presence, there was no denying that, but with my predisposition to regard McAuley as the enemy - the boyfriend was also a modem poet - I was unable to detect the charisma about which I have since heard so much. When he was at university in the late thirties, McAuley cut a dazzling figure among his admiring university cohorts, as Michael Heyward makes clear in The Em Malley Affair. Everyone was in awe of him. He could dominate a room on entry. Wildly funny he was a master of the sardonic and given to outrageous puns and scarifying repartee. The shoddy world he perceived around him provided plenty of fuel for contempt, and he showed no fear or favour when it came to making someone look like a fool. To add to his lustre, McAuley was a brilliant and inventive pianist.

Desde el punto de vista histórico, se menciona la creación de algunas instituciones y organismos que han contribuido al desarrollo de una bioética católica; desde la perspectiva de los temas y contenidos, se propone que el aporte específico de la Iglesia Católica al desarrollo de la bioética comprende cuestiones de método, de epistemología y de fundamentación. En este contexto se mencionan algunos documentos del Magisterio eclesiástico que han contribuido a iluminar y enriquecer la reflexión bioética sobre algunos temas concretos. Central a este aporte de la Iglesia es la comprensión de la persona y su dignidad, especialmente a partir del Concilio Vaticano II, que desarrolla un “personalismo critológico”.
