  • Top 12 Soul Jazz and Groove Releases of 2006 on the Soul Jazz Spectrum
Top 12 Soul Jazz and Groove Releases of 2006 on the Soul Jazz Spectrum Here’s a rundown of the Top 12 albums we enjoyed the most on the Soul Jazz Spectrum in 2006 1) Trippin’ – The New Cool Collective (Vine) Imagine a big band that swings, funks, grooves and mixes together R&B, jazz, soul, Afrobeat, Latin and more of the stuff in their kitchen sink into danceable jazz. This double CD set features the Dutch ensemble in their most expansive, challenging effort to date. When you can fill two discs with great stuff and nary a dud, you’re either inspired or Vince Gill. These guys are inspired and it’s impossible to not feel gooder after listening to Trippin.’ Highly recommended. 2) On the Outset – Nick Rossi Set (Hammondbeat) It’s a blast of fresh, rare, old air. You can put Rossi up there on the Hammond B3 pedestal with skilled survivors like Dr. Lonnie Smith and Reuben Wilson. This album is relentlessly grooving, with no ballad down time. If you think back to the glory days of McGriff and McDuff, this “set” compares nicely. 3) The Body & Soul Sessions – Phillip Saisse Trio (Rendezvous) Pianist Saisse throws in a little Fender Rhodes and generally funks up standards and covers some newer tunes soulfully and exuberantly. Great, great version of Steely Dan’s “Do It Again.” Has that feel good aura of the old live Ramsey Lewis and Les McCann sides, even though a studio recording. 4) Step It Up – The Bamboos (Ubiquity) If you’re old enough or retro enough to recall the spirit and heart of old soul groups like Archie Bell and the Drells, these Aussies are channeling that same energy and nasty funk instrumentally.

  • GEORGE BENSON: OFF the RECORD by Eric Myers ______[This Article Appeared in the December, 1980 Edition of Encore Magazine.]
GEORGE BENSON: OFF THE RECORD by Eric Myers _________________________________________________________ [This article appeared in the December, 1980 edition of Encore magazine.] t the George Benson press conference on November 26, the questions and answers were predictable: Benson's transition from a jazz guitarist to a A popular entertainer; his underprivileged childhood on the streets of Pittsburgh; the debt he owes to jazz greats like Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery, John Coltrane; and so on. We discovered that Benson was in reform school for six weeks as a teenager but, despite his participation in the life of the streets, he never got into drugs. George Benson: he moved to Hawaii recently because his phone never stopped ringing… PHOTO COURTESY DEFINITIVE ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA OF JAZZ & BLUES He is an Arian (born March 22), now a Jehovah's Witness, and moved to Hawaii recently because, back in the States, he was continually being pestered by old colleagues in the music business, wishing to climb onto his successful bandwagon. He felt impelled to move away because his phone never stopped ringing. Far more revealing was the extended conversation I had with George Benson later over lunch. I was not scheduled to meet him personally but, at the press lunch, he happened to sit at my table directly opposite me, and he proved to be entirely open and willing to answer questions, and discuss frankly a whole host of things. On the question of his so-called "commercialism", he was not offended by Barney Kessel's recent comment, that "George Benson is a great jazz guitarist who is not presently playing jazz." He feels that, while it is important for music that the pure 1 jazz mainstream continues, he is concerned now to play music that the general public will like and accept.

  • Blue Note Label Discography Was Compiled Using Our Record Collections, Schwann Catalogs from 1949 to 1982, a Phono-Log from 1963
Discography Of The Blue Note Label Blue Note was started in New York City in 1938 by Alfred W. Lion. Blue Note recorded jazz only. The following history of the Blue Note record label is from the Blue Note Website (bluenote.com). “In 1925, 16-year old Alfred Lion noticed a concert poster for Sam Wooding's orchestra near his favorite ice-skating arena in his native Berlin, Germany. He'd heard many of his mother's jazz records and began to take an interest in the music, but that night his life was changed. The impact of what he heard live touched a deep passion within him. His thirst for the music temporarily brought him to New York in 1928 where he worked on the docks and slept in Central Park to get closer to the music. On December 23, 1938, Lion attended the celebrated Spirituals to Swing concert at Carnegie Hall. The power, soul and beauty with which boogie woogie piano masters Albert Ammons and Meade Lux Lewis rocked the stage gripped him. Exactly two weeks later, on January 6 at 2 in the afternoon, he brought them into a New York studio to make some recordings. They took turns at the one piano, recording four solos each before relinquishing the bench to the other man. The long session ended with two stunning duets. Blue Note Records was finally a reality. The label's first brochure in May of 1939 carried a statement of purpose that Lion rarely strayed from throughout the many styles and years during which he built one of the greatest jazz record companies in the world.

GEORGE BENSON NEA Jazz Master (2009) Interviewee: George Benson (March 22, 1943 - ) Interviewer: Anthony Brown with recording engineer Ken Kimery Date: April 17-18, 2011 Repository: Archives Center, National Museum of American History Description: Transcript, 108 pp. Brown: Today is April 17th, 2011. This is the Smithsonian Jazz Oral History Program interview with NEA Jazz Master, guitarist, vocalist, composer, and arranger George Benson in his house in Phoenix, Arizona, conducted by Anthony Brown with Marty Ashby and Ken Kimery present. Good afternoon, George Benson. Benson: Good afternoon. Brown: I just want to say, first of all, that it’s indeed a pleasure and an honor to be here to conduct this oral history interview for the national archives, and I just want to say that the last interview we conducted was with Hubert Laws, last month with Hubert Laws, and of course when I think of both of you, you two basically created the soundtrack for my college era in the ’70s, the music on CTI, and then you later on, on Warner Bros., was a music that I came of age with, and I just want to thank – as I did thank Hubert Laws – thank you for giving my life such a blessed soundtrack. Benson: He’s a great musician. I really enjoyed – I knew I moved up in class when I started working with him. Brown: If we could start by you stating your full name, your birth name, your date of birth, and your place of birth.
