FOREWORD Of unusual occurrence is the publication oI a thesis 40 ye,Lrs after its completion and acceptance in partial tultilln~cntof the require- ments for the Doctor of Philosophy degree, ant1 also nIter the death of the author. Such thesis is herewith published in the Miscellnneous Publications of the Museum of Zoology, as a memorial number for Dr. Justin W. Leonard. The greater part of the study reported here was carried on during the period 1931-34 while Dr. Leonard was a graduate student at the University of Michigan. Since that time, the varied demands of his professional duties, and the difIiculties in obtaining funds for the printing, resulted in repeated delays or publication. A few years ago, Dr. B. E. Montgomery and Dr. Leonard began to revise the original mCmuscript and made a few minor changes in the Introduction and preliminary discussion concerning the genus Acantha,qrzon. These have been incorporated in this published version. The hopeful waiting ior the publication of this work has apparently been responsible for the delay in describing new species by other authors. Since the completion of the thesis, only six new species and two new subspecies have been described. These arc listed herewith in an Appendix. Lconord I<. Gloyd INTRODUCTION The genus ;lca~zthagrio~zwas erected for the reception of certain Neotropical coenagrionine Zygoptera by the great Belgian odonatol- ogist, Baron Edmond de Selys-Longchamps, in 1876. Into this genus, at the time of its description, he placed Agrion ~racilr,described "l'rom Brazil" by Rambur (1842) as the first species of "2e groupe: (A. GRACILE)." At thc samc time, Selys published descrip- tions of 13 new forms - 8 as species (apicale, chcl$erum, i~ztcr- ruptum, laleralc, nigrinuchale, temporale, trimaculalum and trun- catz~f~z),2 as varieties of cq:.mcile (czi~zcatumand qunclratzi17z), anti 3 as races of gracile (la~zcea,rninarzi?n and uitlua). No further additions were made to the gcnus for 23 years, when Calvert (1 899) tlescribed lala/~istyl~.im.Ten years later, Calvert (1909) described 9 more forms - 4 as species (clzacoense, clznmrum, clzirilzzianurn and cuyabae) ant1 5 as subspccics (ablz~tumand useendens as subspecies of gracile, fi~nense and ,frcirensc as subspccics of cziyabae, and rusticurn as a doubtfully distinct subspecies of clzeliferzinz). Ris described G forms for the genus - 5 as species (amOiiqzizim in 1904, aczitunz, luna and yulzsarzim in 1916, li~zd~zrriin 1928) and one, honarie~zsc,as a sub- species of ilzterru[)tzi17z in 1913. A key tothe 9 known congeneric larvae is provided INTRODUCTION The neotropical genus Acanthagrion Selys, 1876 comprises 40 known species ELLENRIEDER & (VON LOZANO, 2008), A. inexpectum Leonard and A. quadratum Selys occur in Mexico (GONZAlEZ-SORIANO & NOVELO-GU- TIERREZ, 2007). The genus was redefined by VON ELLENR1EDER & LOZ- ANO (2008), who diagnosed the larvae from those of Oxyagrion by their markedly lanceolate caudal lamellae, with width/length ratio 0.18 or less, and longer than abdomen (1.02 or more). Despite the speciose nature of the genus, larvae of only eight species (20% of genus) have been described: A. ascendens Calvert (GEIJS- KES, 1941), A. adustum Williamsonand A. indefensum Williamson(GEIJSKES, 1943), A. fluviatile De Marmels (DE MARMELS, 1990), A. apicale Selys (DE MARMELS, 1992), A. hildegarda Gloger (MUZON et al. 2001), A. vidua Selys (DE MARMELS, 2007), and A. aepiolum Tennessen (LOZANO et al., 2007). WESTFALL & MAY (1996) keyed the larva of A. quadratum, providing some but did include figures, not a description.

Distribution maps and new records are provided for all three species. Finally, a key to females of the genus Acanthagrion from Argentina is provided. Acanthagrion cuyabae é aqui revalidada com base nos caracteres morfológicos da fêmea. E-mails: [email protected]; [email protected] Abstract The development of the nymphal stages of Acanthagrion viridescens Leonard was examined under laboratory conditions. Based on specimens collected in Minas Gerais state (Brazilian Southeastern Region), we described and illustrated the last- instar nymph and illustrated the egg and other nymphal stages. The nymphs of A. viridescens went through 11 instars, each of them with an average duration of approximately 13 days. The combinations of the following characteristics distinguish the last-instar nymph of A. viridescens from congeners: prementum with 2+1 setae in each side; labial palp with six apical denticles; mandibular formula L 1+2 3 4 5 y a, R 1+2 3 4 5 y- a b; presence of trifid spine in the ventral distal region of the tibia and in the tarsi; format of the male and female gonapophyses; and the distinctive pattern of the tracheae in the caudal gills. This also represents the first record of this species from southeastern Brazil. SGMA seeks to achieve sustainability, which is defined as the absence of several undesirable results, including “depletions of interconnected surface water that have significant and unreasonable adverse impacts on beneficial users of surface water” (Water Code §10721). The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a science-based, nonprofit organization with a mission to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. Like humans, plants and animals often rely on groundwater for survival, which is why TNC helped develop, and is now helping to implement, SGMA. Earlier this year, we launched the Groundwater Resource Hub, which is an online resource intended to help make it easier and cheaper to address environmental requirements under SGMA. As a first step in addressing when depletions might have an adverse impact, The Nature Conservancy recommends identifying the beneficial users of surface water, which include environmental users. This is a critical step, as it is impossible to define “significant and unreasonable adverse impacts” without knowing what is being impacted. To make this easy, we are providing this letter and the accompanying documents as the best available science on the freshwater species within the boundary of your groundwater sustainability agency (GSA).

(Holotype male: BRASIL, Mato Grosso do Sul, Campo Grande, UFMS, 20°29’56.26’’S - 54°36’48.43’’W, 547m, leg. M.E. Rodrigues, 03.ii.2015, collection code: VZYG437, MLP) is described and illustrated on the basis of 15 males. The new species belongs to the apicale species group by having horns on S10 and sclerotized hooks on tip of distal segment of the genital ligula. It can be easily distinguished from other species of the group by a combination of characters of the genital ligulae (presence of setae on segment two; absence of setae at flexure; distal lateral lobes of segment three absent). Notes on habitat and a modification of previous keys for the species of theapicale group are provided. Key words: Acanthagrion, Coenagrionidae, Neotropics, Odonata, Zygoptera. We registered 111 species from the region. The families with the highest number of species were Libellulidae (50 species), Coenagrionidae (43 species) and Gomphidae (12 species). 35 species are registered in the IUCN Red List species, four being Data Deficient, 29 of Least Concern and two species being in the threatened category. Phyllogomphoides suspectus Belle, 1994 (Odonata: Gomphidae) was registered for the first time in the state. Por lo tanto afectando también a los odonatos, cuya diversidad disminuye con el aumento de aquellas y encontrándose que su mayor diversidad está en la franja tropical especialmente las regiones biogeográficas Oriental y Neotropical. La primera parte del estudio muestra el efecto de la altitud sobre la diversidad de la odonatofauna en un perfil altitudinal sobre la Cordillera Oriental de los Andes colombianos.
