COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON HEAD COACH EARL GRANT

Head Coach Earl Grant, 39, is in his fourth season at the College of Charleston. He was named the 23rd men’s basketball head coach in program history in September of 2014.

A former Lowcountry prep star out of R.B. Stall High School, Grant joined the company of CofC coaching greats Alfred von Kolnitz (1924-26), Ernest Wehman (two tenures from 1933-42, 1957-58), Willard Silcox, Sr. (three tenures: 1943-44, 1948-53, 1955-56), Fred Daniels (1968-70), Alan LeForce (1970-79), the program’s all-time winningest coach John Kresse (1979-2002) and Bobby Cremins (2006-12).

In 2016-17, Grant led the Cougars to a 25-10 overall record and 14-4 mark in Colonial Athletic Association play. It marked the program’s first 20-win campaign since 2013. Charleston, seeded a program-best No. 2, advanced to the championship game of the CAA Tournament for the first time since CofC joined the Colonial in 2013. They were also selected and made their fifth all-time appearance in the Postseason NIT. It was their first postseason berth (NCAA or NIT) since 2011.

“Our men’s basketball program’s success on-and-off the court is the direct result of Earl Grant’s leadership and commitment to the College of Charleston,” CofC Director of Athletics Matt Roberts said. “He and his staff have done a tremendous job in just three short years of turning our program into a competitive one in the CAA. We feel he is on the verge of taking us to the next level and national stage.”

In his second season with the Cougars, he and his staff turned the program into one of the most improved in NCAA Division I and developed four all-conference players including Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year and All-CAA Third Team selection Jarrell Brantley – the first freshman to receive such honors since 2006.

The Cougars also finished the 2015-16 season ranked No. 8 in the nation in scoring defense holding opponents to an average of 62.0 points per game – the seventh-lowest average in the program’s NCAA Division I era. They also limited 16 of their 18 CAA opponents to 65 points or less and allowed a league-low 59.2 points per game in conference play. In addition, CofC went 9-4 in non-conference action including an upset of preseason Top-25 ranked LSU and projected No. 1 NBA Draft pick Ben Simmons on November 30, 2015 at TD Arena.

Known as a top recruiter, Grant has also signed back-to-back recruiting classes that will help the Cougars contend for CAA Championships. He previously spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Clemson under Brad Brownell, where he made a positive impact on the Tiger men’s basketball program, both in recruiting and with player development. He worked primarily with Clemson’s point guards.

Prior to Clemson, Grant spent six years as an assistant coach under former College of Charleston assistant coach Gregg Marshall, the last three for him at Wichita State from 2007-10.

With Grant on board, the Shockers made gradual improvement each season, culminating with a 25-10 overall record and 12-6 Missouri Valley Conference mark in 2009-10. The Shockers advanced to the championship game of the MVC Tournament and also earned a bid to the National Invitation Tournament.

In three seasons at Winthrop University under Marshall from 2004-07, Grant helped the Eagles to three-consecutive Big South Conference Championships and three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances.

Prior to joining Marshall’s staff at Winthrop, Grant was an assistant coach at crosstown rival The Citadel from 2002-04.

A native of North Charleston, S.C., Grant earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Georgia College in 2000. He and his wife, Jacci, a 2001 College of Charleston graduate receiving a degree in elementary education, have three sons: Trey (11), Eyzaiah (9) and Elonzo (6).

COUGAR SOUND BITES

“It doesn’t change who we are. Certainly, he (Jarrell Brantley) is a very important offensive and defensive guy for us. He means a lot to our team and is a very good player. But, in terms of who we are, it doesn’t change the efforts that we can put out on the court each and everyday. It means everyone has to give a bit more of an extra effort and some guys will have to play more minutes. We played two games (Siena and Wichita State) that were hard and challenging. We have another tough one coming up at Charlotte. Four-to-six weeks is good news when you are dealing with a knee (injury). It’s usually a lot longer than that, and at this point, Jarrell’s spirit is up and we know the results now. We have a game on Saturday and we have three more in Alaska. For now, we have to find a way and keep focused. Charlotte will be a tough test for us on Saturday.” – CofC Head Coach Earl Grant on how the team will with the loss of Jarrell Brantley in the lineup for the next four- to-six weeks

“We learned we have to play hard for 40 minutes. In the first half, we came out timid and it hurt us in the long run. But, overall it was a good experience and I feel like we learned a lot. Outside of Joe (Chealey), not a lot of us have played in an environment like that. We didn’t come out as aggressive as we wanted to. In the second half, we picked it up and played our brand of basketball. Looking forward, as long as we stick to our brand of basketball, we will be okay.” – CofC Sophomore Guard Grant Riller on what the team learned from the Wichita State road game in a tough environment

“It has been tough without him, obviously, because he is such a big part of our offense. We are trying to integrate Jaylen (McManus) into the lineup and get him more comfortable at the four-position.” – Riller on the loss of Jarrell Brantley in the lineup
