Geological Society of Malaysia Bulletin 49
Annual Geological Conference 2004, June 4 – 6 Putra Palace, Kangar, Perlis, Malaysia Concentration of heavy metals beneath the Ampar Tenang municipal open-tipping site, Selangor, Malaysia ABDUL RAHIM SAMSUDIN, BAHAA-ELDIN ELWALI A. RAHIM, WAN ZUHAIRI WAN YAACOB & ABDUL GHANI RAFEK Geology Program, School of Environment & Natural Resources Sciences, Faculty of Science & Technology, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, 43600 Bangi, Selangor Abstract: Heavy metals namely Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn, Pb, and Co in soil horizons beneath the Ampar Tenang municipal open-tipping site have been extensively investigated through examination of twenty one representative triplicate soil samples that were collected from nine auger holes distributed in three locations within the study area. These include upstream (ATU), downstream (ATD), and soil- waste interface (ATI). Results obtained for ATI revealed considerably higher concentration levels of most of the elements analyzed compared to ATD and ATU. Moreover, Cr, Zn and Pb had shown higher levels of concentration amongst all examined metals. It was found that in most cases, the heavy metal concentration was generally high at the surface and downwards up to 60 cm depth, then decreased relatively with increasing depth. It was shown that, in addition to the vertical infiltration of leachate from the solid waste, the hydrological regime of groundwater has also a strong impact on the contaminants distribution in soils below the site. INTRODUCTION of 0.5 to 5.5 m thick Beruas Formation with peat layer at the top, the clayey Gula Formation and the Kempadang Landfilling which is still the most popular form of Formation (MGD, 2001; Bosch, 1988). Immediately, municipal solid waste treatment in many countries now, below the peat there is a layer of very soft to soft takes up lots of areas and leads to a serious pollution to its compressible marine clay (Omar et al., 1999). -

Norma-Rashid 1 ABSTRACT We report the mudskipper Periophthalmus spilotus the for first time from Peninsular Malaysia ,based on 18 individuals captured at Sementa ,Selangor ,from May to August ,2000 individuals The individuals caught h巴re are similar to those from Sumatra described by MURDY & TAKITA , (1999). (1999). Features distinguishing this species from the available congeneric species 紅巳 described below. below. An alysis of the stomach contents of 20 specimens revealed carnivorous feeding habits. Key Key words: Food habits ,goby ,mudskipper , new record ,Peninsular Malaysia , Periophthalmus spilotus spilotus INTRODUCTION Mudskippers , small euryhalin 巴 fishes best known for their amphibious habits ,紅 e the most conspicuous and unique fishes of mangrove areas. Th ey are active on land during low tide tide and can live out of water for some time. 官 le greatest diversity of mudskippers (subfamily Oxudercinae Oxudercinae of Gobiidae) is in the genus Periophthalmus (Ps.) , with 14 species (MURDY , 1989; 1989; LEEET A L., 1995 ,MURDY & TAKITA ,1999). Th eir distribution and habitats are based on the pr< 回 ence of suitable muddy substrates such as those found in mangrove swamps , estuaries estuaries and mudflats in the intertidal zones of the Indo-Pacific and West Africa (MACNAE , 1968; 1968; CLAYTON , 1993). CANTOR (1849) was the first author to record the occu 町 ence of mudskippers in Peninsular Peninsular Malaysia , but he did not record any Periophthalmus in his review. -

Collaboration, Christian Mission and Contextualisation: the Overseas Missionary Fellowship in West Malaysia from 1952 to 1977
Collaboration, Christian Mission and Contextualisation: The Overseas Missionary Fellowship in West Malaysia from 1952 to 1977 Allen MCCLYMONT A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Kingston University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History. Submitted June 2021 ABSTRACT The rise of communism in China began a chain of events which eventually led to the largest influx of Protestant missionaries into Malaya and Singapore in their history. During the Malayan Emergency (1948-1960), a key part of the British Government’s strategy to defeat communist insurgents was the relocation of more than 580,000 predominantly Chinese rural migrants into what became known as the ‘New Villages’. This thesis examines the response of the Overseas Missionary Fellowship (OMF), as a representative of the Protestant missionary enterprise, to an invitation from the Government to serve in the New Villages. It focuses on the period between their arrival in 1952 and 1977, when the majority of missionaries had left the country, and assesses how successful the OMF was in fulfilling its own expectation and those of the Government that invited them. It concludes that in seeking to fulfil Government expectation, residential missionaries were an influential presence, a presence which contributed to the ongoing viability of the New Villages after their establishment and beyond Independence. It challenges the portrayal of Protestant missionaries as cultural imperialists as an outdated paradigm with which to assess their role. By living in the New Villages under the same restrictions as everyone else, missionaries unconsciously became conduits of Western culture and ideas. At the same time, through learning local languages and supporting indigenous agency, they encouraged New Village inhabitants to adapt to Malaysian society, while also retaining their Chinese identity. -

Meriam Di Kota Melawati, Kuala Selangor
International Journal of the Malay World and Civilisation 8(2), 2020: 19 - 24 (https://doi.org/10.17576-2020-0802-03) Meriam di Kota Melawati, Kuala Selangor Cannons in Fort Melawati, Kuala Selangor MOHD HAIDI MOHD KASRAN, ROZEHA HARUN & MOHD HAIRUL IZWAN MOHD KASRAN ABSTRAK Makalah ini ditulis dengan tujuan untuk mendokumentasikan semula kewujudan beberapa laras meriam besi di Kota Melawati, Kuala Selangor, Selangor. Kata kunci: Meriam; kepentingan; kesultanan; Selangor; pertahanan ABSTRACT This paper is written with the purpose of re-documenting the existence of a barrel of iron cannon at Melawati Fort, Kuala Selangor, Selangor. The discovery of the cannons are the manifestations of the Selangor Sultanate and the colonization of the Anglo-Dutch in Selangor. The existence of these cannons also show the armaments and defenses for the sovereignty of the king and state against the threats among enemies. Such discoveries imply that the Malays were not weak for not only have the dagger and the spear, they had even formulated security defense with the cannon as one of the most powerful weapons used to defeat the enemies. -
