VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION LUNCHEON Wednesday June 12, 2013 12:30 PM

Volunteerism is deeply rooted in our Country’s history and culture. It is what keeps us connected to our community and to enjoy that sense of belonging. Volunteers are a diverse group of individuals with dif- fering backgrounds, experiences, interests and talents. They are resilient, steadfast, hard-working and dedicat- ed folks that symbolize the true spirit of volunteerism.

On June 12, 2013 we have scheduled our Volunteer Recognition Luncheon at which time staff will honor and pay tribute to the many wonderful Stillaguamish Senior Center Volunteers. This years’ theme “Being a Piece of The Puzzle”, the center couldn’t do it without you. A once-a year Recognition for the tre- mendous volunteer services these many dedicated people provide is hardly enough to thank them for the enor- mous numbers of hours that they generously contribute day after day to the success of their Senior Center. If you have volunteered between May 2012-May 2013 please RSVP with the Program Administrator: (360) 653 -4551 by Friday June 7, 2013.

WALKING:  Promotes physical activity: Studies have shown that people who are physically active, live longer and feel better.  Boosts brain power: Walking improves your ability to make decisions, solve problems, and focus. Even small doses of walking, like a 15 minute trek, can increase your brain power.  Aids in long-lasting weight management. Walking burns calories and fights unwanted pounds.  Requires only a modest investment of time and money: Walking for 30 minutes a day can be split up into shorter sessions of two 15 minute walks or three 10 minute walks. Fancy gear is not needed, just a good pair of walking shoes.  Increases productivity: Physical activity increases energy levels, reduces stress and contributes to an improved immune system. It also improves concentration and short term memory.  May lead to reduced costs: Sedentary behavior results in higher costs. Walking is one way to help prevent and manage several chronic diseases.

Volunteerism Do you want to add more meaning to your life, but are unsure of how to do so? Would you like to forget about your troubles, if only temporarily, while you help someone else? If you answer “yes” to these questions, becoming a volunteer may benefit you and your life. Volunteering helps bolster self-esteem. When you help someone else, you feel better about yourself. Volunteering is a great way to meet like-minded, helpful people. Making new friends can become more difficult as you grow older. When you participate in activities you enjoy, you meet people with whom you have something in common. Regardless of your age or physical limitation, you can become a volunteer. Becoming involved is one of the most re- warding ways to enrich your life. Get involved and become a volunteer at the Stillaguamish Senior Center!!!!!

Volunteering is one way of giving back to your Senior Center. Volunteers are the heart of the Center and we can always use more heart, so if you are not volunteering contact the Cen- ter (360) 653-4551 ask for D. J. It’s time to get in shape. But most important of all it’s fun & easy. In this league it doesn’t matter if you stand or sit down to bowl, as long as you have fun doing it. That is our main priority. If you think about it though, Wii bowling is very healthy for you in a gentle kind of way. It doesn’t matter if you have never bowled before. If you can swing your arm you can bowl. If you want lessons, please see DJ for help. There is much laughing and hooting when strikes are thrown. Stop by some Friday at 1 pm or whenever the cabinet is open and someone is playing. The team bowls tournaments with other teams in the area. A great way to meet peo- ple! HIGH SCORES for April & May were: Judy 217, Betty 190, Diane 190 against Everett; Jerry 244, Virginia 212 against Edmonds; Jerry 228, Diane 222 against Edmonds; Virginia 193, Pat 183 against Cascadian Place.

We are looking for people who would enjoy playing golf on the Wii system. We also have Wii Frisbee golf. With this virtual game you don’t have to walk the course lugging the clubs or bending over all the time to pick up the frisbee. (Rain or no rain, it’s nice inside the senior center!) Talk with DJ to join the team. Give it a swing or a throw, it will be fun!

Stillaguamish Senior Center News Page 9 PEN PALS MET MAY 21, 2013 STILLY SENIORS AND STUDENTS MET AT THE LAKEWOOD SCHOOL AFTER WRITING EACH OTHER ALL SCHOOL YEAR.

Page 10 Stillaguamish Senior Center News David Earl Duskin was born Feb. 18, in Arlington, along with his twin brother Dale. They had two other brothers also.

Dave went all through school in Arlington, graduating from AHS!! From there he studied pre-law, political sci- ence and economics at Washington State University. Then on to the University of Idaho Law School for 3 more years. Then Dave did an internship at the Prose- cuting Attorneys office for Whitman County. While over on the Eastern side of the mountains, he met his wife Kay, and they were married in 1971. Dave and Kay have two sons, Bryce and Brady, and three grandchildren.

When they moved back to Arlington, in 1974, Dave worked as a Court Commissioner and Pro-tem Judge for Cascade District Court. He also joined the Law Practice as an Associate at that time.

Dave has been on the Board at the Stilly Center since 1975, and has been President of the Board 3 or 4 times. He has provided some Pro Bono legal counseling for the center, as well as given seminars for caregivers here. He says the most rewarding thing he has done at the center is to have proposed the life- time achievement breakfast as a fund raiser, and has enjoyed co-chairing the event with his twin brother Dale. They are long time Rotarians and the senior center has always been one of his clubs benefactors.

Dave likes to fish, and duck hunt, and has a duck shack up on the Tom Moore slough. They have a summer home at Tyee Beach on Camano Island, and a Time Share on the Island of Kauai. The family enjoys the Ca- mano place all the time, and get to Kauai about every other year or so.

He and Kay are big Cougar fans, and go to all the home games they can, and some away games too.

Dave is a descendant of a pioneer family in the Stilly Valley. His maternal grandmother traveled up the Stil- ly river in a canoe, about 1890-ish. Her name was Anna Meyers Preston Mathews.

Dave’s father had the Bakery in Arlington for 32 years, and all the kids worked there from a very young age. Dave’s grandfather on the Duskin side had a dairy out on Kent Prairie--the Maple Leaf Dairy. Dave’s son Bryce is a Dentist on the property where the Dairy was. Also there was a house adjacent to the property where Dave’s dad was born. The original farmhouse is still on Portage Creek. Also, Dave’s twin brother Dale owns Arlington Pharmacy, and his son manages it!!

Dave’s wife Kay is a volunteer in her own right, and I don’t know how they have time to be home at all!!! Their connection to the pioneers of this area and the service they both give benefits us all. The mob and the CIA have conspired to blackmail Eddie and his partner (Aiello) into stealing three da Vinci masterpieces from the most heavily-guarded museums in the world. Sounds simple, right? WRONG! While trying to steal the goods, Hawk falls in love with a beautiful but schizophrenic nun (MacDowell) and is re- lentlessly pursued by the greedy and powerful Minerva and Dar- win Mayflower, who want the artworks as part of their twisted plot to ruin the world's economy.
